Mysterious metal ball from space falls in Namibia

A large metal ball that fell from space into the Namibian grasslands last month is not alien, officials say, but that's about all they know for certain about the object.

According to a report on The Namibian website, the 13-pound metal sphere with two bumps on its poles was found by a farmer near Onamatunga in the Omunsati region between November 15 and November 20. Explosions were heard in the area before the discovery, but no evidence of an explosion was seen around the area where the object was found.

Paul Ludik, director of the country's National Forensic Science Institute, told The Namibian the sphere, with a circumference of 3.6 feet, is made of a "sophisticated" metal alloy that is known to man, but he said it has no markings that would identify it. No international space agency has claimed ownership, he said.

“A number of tests have been performed on the object, and it appears to be hollow. We are still busy with a detailed examination of the object,” The Namibian quotes him as saying.

Ludik told The Namibian that the object poses no cause for alarm, and that such reports of metallic spheres falling from space are common in the Southern Hemisphere.

So should we expect a run on helmets at sporting goods stores south of the equator?

It is a hydrazine propellant tank – see picture: http://cs.astrium.eads.net/sp/spacecraft-propulsion/propellant-tanks/104-litre-hydrazine-propellant-tank.html

You don't know what your talking about. It is clearly some sort of alien artifact designed to open an intergalactic gateway. Sure, we could go with your explanation. But isn't mine more interesting?

Thanks for the great info. The artifact does seem to be quite similar to that fuel tank you linked to.

All the tanks they have there are too big to be that same one, but that's not to say another company makes a 350mm one.

If your search for "metal buoy float" in Google images you will also find a number of items very similar in appearance and Namibia is a coastal nation. Although, a hydrazine tank would explain the metal alloy.

You are wrong. I can prove it using math and unit conversion.
The measurements in the article do not match up with the measurements provided. First of all the weight is off by a little over a pound. Second using the simple equation, we find that the ball found has a diameter of 339.573273. The diameter of the object you showed was 586 mm. Im interested to know why you posted this object, and how you found it in a search.

I think people in these countries are bit more worried about food and water than helmets from Big 10. But, it sure looks like "Happy Fun Ball", the official line about "known" materials and "not alien" is suspect, they don't want to alarm anyone. Ship it to Area 51.

obviously they are trying to cover up what it really is. That is not some random ball that happens to be nearly a perfect sphere that randomly fell from the sky?? i mean come on, its sooooo obvious that we humans are not alone on this planet we just have to open our eyes and get answers from the government!

Everyone, stop posting ideas of what you think this thing is. It is the first paragraph of a Hollywood movie script by a well known producer who is fresh out of ideas and paid CNN to run the story. The producer wants to plagiarize the best of the proffered ideas to make a movie to be released just before the 2012 election. If you do want to give your ideas, first make the producer sign an iron clad agreement to give you 30% of the gross movie take.
