Joran van der Sloot on Friday was sentenced to 28 years in a Peruvian prison for the 2010 murder of 21-year-old Stephany Flores.
With credit for time served, his sentence would end on June 10, 2038.
He was also ordered to pay about $74,500 to the victim's family.
On Wednesday, the 24-year-old Dutch national confessed to the charges of "qualified murder" and simple robbery.
It was an apparent attempt to win a more lenient sentence, using a plea called an "anticipated conclusion of the process" under Peruvian law.
Under sentencing guidelines, the panel of judges could have ordered van der Sloot imprisoned for as much as 30 years.
Police say van der Sloot murdered Flores in his Lima hotel room in May 2010, then took money and bank cards from her wallet and fled to Chile, where he was arrested a few days later.
Investigators believe he killed the Peruvian woman after she found something related to the case of missing Alabama teenager Natalee Holloway on van der Sloot's computer while she was visiting him in his hotel room.
Van der Sloot was among the last people seen with Holloway, 18, before she went missing on the island of Aruba in 2005. He was detained twice, but never charged, in Holloway's disappearance.
The girl's body has never been found.
Alabama Probate Judge Alan King on Thursday signed an order declaring Holloway legally dead.
Van der Sloot faces possible extradition to the United States in a matter tied to Holloway's disappearance and her family.
In June 2010, a federal grand jury in Alabama indicted him on charges of wire fraud and extortion after allegations surfaced that he tried to extort $250,000 from Holloway's mother, Beth. Van der Sloot offered to provide what turned out to be bogus information about the whereabouts of Holloway's remains in exchange for the money, according to the indictment.
He was allegedly given a total of $25,000, and authorities believe he used that money to travel to Peru and participate in a poker tournament, where he met Flores.

He should be shot!
Look at the hairline. The man is a Neanderthal.
Netherlander actually.
Universal Justice!! Natalie got him exactly on the same date as her death. He won't be getting out of a Peruvian prison after serving only half of his sentence as he would have in the U.S. He probably won't even live long enough to ever get out of prison.
I agree. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if he did himself in. This cretin is a very ill young man. His family knew it and his father covered up for him and didn't do anything to help him, like therapy; they enabled him to kill again. His life is over.
Prison is prison. Even if he has TVs and other fancy stuff. He is IN prison. He can't go wherever he wants to AND he won't be a danger to anybody else. I praise the Peruvian authorities for not let this piece of slime to "slither" out of their grasp.
Mareid, not just any prison either. Unless they change their usual, he stands a good chance of ending up in one of the most notorious prisons in the world (they covered a special on it last year). Poetic justice to say the least.
Mark, what prison is that? I belive Lurigancho is pretty bad already
This guy is slime and just looking at him makes me angry. I hope the prisoners there beat the heck out of him and give him what he deserves. I pray for the victims families.
Amen Angry Dutch man
Hopefully this will help bring closure to the Flores family. Prayers to all domestic violence victims and their families and friends.
look at the forehead on sloot. Looks like the windshield of a 38 Ford. They say poeple that has his looks, are slower in the head.
Dude, the Germans made similar claims in the 30's and 40's,
What "People's" representatives have decided that an innocent human's life is only worth 28 years of imprisonment? Due to a liberal mindset, the cost, or penalty, for murder seems to be getting less all the time. Do NOT extradite him to the US. He would have unending delays, postponements, appeals, etc., only to be finally placed in some prison that would seem like the Waldorf-Astoria to prisoners in other countries of the world.
28 years?! That's it???!!! It should at least be life in prison for taking a life!! Some justice!
This POS should be hung from the nearest tree!!!
This little punk finally got what was coming to him.
It's funny how things catch up to people. Van Der Sloot's Dad, now the kid, and hopefully his little punk buddies in Aruba will have to face justice someday too.
RIP Natalie
they didn't say if he is eligable for parole.
Put him on ice, ship him to the US and we'll use his organs for folks that need em. At least some good could come of him.
I don't pray for his victims, they don't need prayers anymore. I pray for Jordan's soul.
How does one say "Bubba" in Spanish (with a Dutch accent)?
Boobaaaaaaaaah!
