Van der Sloot sentenced to 28 years in prison for Peru murder

Joran van der Sloot on Friday was sentenced to 28 years in a Peruvian prison for the 2010 murder of 21-year-old Stephany Flores.

With credit for time served, his sentence would end on June 10, 2038.

He was also ordered to pay about $74,500 to the victim's family.

On Wednesday, the 24-year-old Dutch national confessed to the charges of "qualified murder" and simple robbery.

It was an apparent attempt to win a more lenient sentence, using a plea called an "anticipated conclusion of the process" under Peruvian law.

Under sentencing guidelines, the panel of judges could have ordered van der Sloot imprisoned for as much as 30 years.

Police say van der Sloot murdered Flores in his Lima hotel room in May 2010, then took money and bank cards from her wallet and fled to Chile, where he was arrested a few days later.

Investigators believe he killed the Peruvian woman after she found something related to the case of missing Alabama teenager Natalee Holloway on van der Sloot's computer while she was visiting him in his hotel room.

Van der Sloot was among the last people seen with Holloway, 18, before she went missing on the island of Aruba in 2005. He was detained twice, but never charged, in Holloway's disappearance.

The girl's body has never been found.

Alabama Probate Judge Alan King on Thursday signed an order declaring Holloway legally dead.

Van der Sloot faces possible extradition to the United States in a matter tied to Holloway's disappearance and her family.

In June 2010, a federal grand jury in Alabama indicted him on charges of wire fraud and extortion after allegations surfaced that he tried to extort $250,000 from Holloway's mother, Beth. Van der Sloot offered to provide what turned out to be bogus information about the whereabouts of Holloway's remains in exchange for the money, according to the indictment.

He was allegedly given a total of $25,000, and authorities believe he used that money to travel to Peru and participate in a poker tournament, where he met Flores.

Now he should go into general population where he can really get his just reward. Mommy wont be able to send protection money forever so sooner or later he will be dealt with in a manner that we all look forward to.

He should have been sentenced to 42 years. 18 years for Natalie and 24 years for Stephany. Those were their ages when he killed them.

He wasn't on trial for the Murder of Ms. Woods. Or maybe you missed this point? I agree though that he should have gotten life for the Murder of Ms. Flores.

With that logic, he should be sentenced to 7 years if he killed a 7 year old? You've got it backward. He should be sentenced to the amount of time they should have lived. What is the live expectancy these days? You do the math.

Lindsey – given this logic, if he killed my 98 year old Grandma, he should get what 1 year in prison?

Actually, his sentence should equal the combined life they had in front of them, not behind them. Because that is what he took from them. Lets say 78 was a reasonable age to expect they would each live. His sentence should be (78-18) + (78-24) = 114 years. And if he doesn't live long enough to serve all those years, then Puru will have to settle for however many years he does have.

yeah, by that logic you would only get a few months for killing babies and 100 years for killing a centurion! Obviously the older you are the more valuable you are to society! You must be pro-choice!

Hahaha @ Troy. Exactly.....he gets it. Just because someone isn't really guilty doesn't mean there isn't enough to prove that they are guilty.

I agree with you, but I don't hope for that for about 10 years or so. He needs to be tortured for a little while in prison for me to be happy 🙂

I hope Natalee's mom finds some peace with this verdict.

He should have been shot to death, but I guess they don't have that option in Peru. But he will try to be a bad a** in prison and he will get what's coming to him. Goodbye Murderer.

The fact is he just killed this young lady and this had nothing to do with Natalie Holloway's death five years earlier. He is seen drinking and leaving the casino with her knowing she had money and you just have to accept this is the way he is. No doubt in my mind that he killed the Holloway girl and didn't get caught and didn't expect to get caught this time. Way to lenient in Peru, this guy should never see the light of day.

Exactly. Shame on the media for going back and making this more about Holloway than the real victim.

No. Throw him in a cell with the biggest, hairiest, most well endowed (between the hips) prisoner they have and tell the guards to ignore all screams coming from the cell. That would be justice.
