Joran van der Sloot on Friday was sentenced to 28 years in a Peruvian prison for the 2010 murder of 21-year-old Stephany Flores.
With credit for time served, his sentence would end on June 10, 2038.
He was also ordered to pay about $74,500 to the victim's family.
On Wednesday, the 24-year-old Dutch national confessed to the charges of "qualified murder" and simple robbery.
It was an apparent attempt to win a more lenient sentence, using a plea called an "anticipated conclusion of the process" under Peruvian law.
Under sentencing guidelines, the panel of judges could have ordered van der Sloot imprisoned for as much as 30 years.
Police say van der Sloot murdered Flores in his Lima hotel room in May 2010, then took money and bank cards from her wallet and fled to Chile, where he was arrested a few days later.
Investigators believe he killed the Peruvian woman after she found something related to the case of missing Alabama teenager Natalee Holloway on van der Sloot's computer while she was visiting him in his hotel room.
Van der Sloot was among the last people seen with Holloway, 18, before she went missing on the island of Aruba in 2005. He was detained twice, but never charged, in Holloway's disappearance.
The girl's body has never been found.
Alabama Probate Judge Alan King on Thursday signed an order declaring Holloway legally dead.
Van der Sloot faces possible extradition to the United States in a matter tied to Holloway's disappearance and her family.
In June 2010, a federal grand jury in Alabama indicted him on charges of wire fraud and extortion after allegations surfaced that he tried to extort $250,000 from Holloway's mother, Beth. Van der Sloot offered to provide what turned out to be bogus information about the whereabouts of Holloway's remains in exchange for the money, according to the indictment.
He was allegedly given a total of $25,000, and authorities believe he used that money to travel to Peru and participate in a poker tournament, where he met Flores.

Scary looking dude – terrible to think that was the last fact those two girls saw.....
Only one for sure.
Come on guy. you really think he didn't kill the first one? That undercover guy got him to admit no one was gonna find her. He knows what happened to her for sure. Glad he'll be in jail, maybe they'll fix him up in there.
ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME????? You can kill someone after you seduced them to come to your room, steal all of their things, walk out calm, cool and collected and get 28 yrs with credit for time served!!! He took this young girls life, now his life should be taken from him...........he should at least get life in prison with no chance of parole, he should NEVER be allowed back on the streets. That's what's wrong with the world today, people get away with all kinds of terrible crimes with a slap on the hand......DISGRACEFUL!! HE CONFESSED, NO SHADOW OF A DOUBT!!
Are you from Peru?
Unfortunately that was the maximum he could be given. Stephany's father should have at least been given a horse whip to whip this brute before he was escorted off.
I think this is about what you'd get for second degree murder in the US.
he can stil go to Hell and last I heard, that's forever...
I agree with you, but there is no perfect Judicial system yet in the world. I hope so, that at the end of his regime in Peru he will face extradition to USA for Natalee case, he has to pay for both cases, not only one.
you mud be christian. Correct?
28 years in a Peruvian prison and 28 years in a US prison are on different ends of the spectrum. I'd hardly say 28 years in a Peruvian prison is a slap on the wrist. He will be lucky if he makes it out of there at all.
Shoot, 28 years in a Peruvian prison? He might die by year 2. I don't know if you've ever seen what their prisons are like, but an American prison is luxury compared to there. Look up the Peru episode of "Locked Up Abroad" if you don't believe me.
Actually, it's probably a much stiffer sentence than he'd get in most U.S. states. In noticing his release date, he doesn't get time off for "good behavior". Doesn't get the swell deal of having his sentence reduced to less than 14 years, and do still less time because he gets pardoned by some outgoing governor. Instead, looks like he'll be doing the entire 28 years in prison – hard time. Since he's so far away from family, he probably won't get a lot of visits. Parents may be deceased when he gets out, and his friends will regard him as a distant memory. Couldn't happen to a more deserving guy.
His father already died of a heart attack a few years ago. Mother will certainly be dead before he gets out.
till year 2038? wow
I watched the sentencing live, and boy was he surprised at the 28 year sentence!
I remember his lawyer saying "innocent until proven guilty". There you go.. He is guilty. Can we bring justice for Natalee now?
When there is more proof. Otherwise Natalee is in the past.
Well, come on. Just because he murdered one girl in Peru does not mean he killed another girl in Aruba.
[sarcasm]
I do hope that he will be kept safe while in prison so he can serve his entire sentence. From everything about prisons in Peru it would be a far worse fate than to be killed by a fellow inmate in the next few years. He's about to spend more than half his life spent in prison.
I hope on the last day of his 28 year sentence, moments before he is released, he is killed by some other sadist. That would be the best of both worlds, a long torturous sentence only to be followed by a death at the last moment and at least as horrific as he subjected two young women to.
There is no such thing as safe in a Peruvian prison. They are horrible and make our worst prison look like Club Med. 28 years, while no where close to enough of a sentence will break this kid a hundred times over.
they should not kill him....its more fun keeping him alive and annoying him.
JORAN DID NOT DESERVE THIS HE IS INNOCENT!
He's innocent? There's facts everywhere including video showing her going into the room alive, him going in and leaving, then her being found dead lol your a fool if your not being sarcastic.
He pleaded guilty!
Are you that idiot that appeared on Nancy Grace show and got thrown out? Are you being supported by this brute's mother? No one else with one working brain cell would utter such BS.
Did you miss the part where he confessed and plead guilty?
You are sick!!!
He plead GUILTY. Therefore he is.
Hey JASPER, are you a f** moron, or are you JORDANs b***, he confessed. He also has been indicted in the U.S.
Why don't you jump off your couch and deliberately fall on your head to get some sense of reality in it.
A much better result than I was expecting, but considerably less than I would have liked to see. It's a shame that the Holloway family don't get much in the way of consolation from this – they had their daughter declared dead today, and still have no legal satisfaction. This guy has inflicted pain on the Holloway family, and then extorted money from them. The fact that he's going to jail for an unrelated incident means that he's effectively sidestepped all responsibility for the anguish he's caused the Holloways. This is too bad, at least he's off the streets for a long time.
Boy, I sure hope he isn't extradited here until after he serves his sentence there. Let him do his time there first.
Agreed, extradition to the US is the best thing that he can hope for now. Let him rot in Peru for the entirety of his sentence and extradite him then, if he's still alive.
execute him
He does look like a chimp! He should hook up with Baboon-face Casey Anthony. Too bad our justice system failed Caylee.
YES! that would be a great match - both pathological liars and murderers.
He won't last a year because his consequences are waiting to give him a big hug.
Do they shank people in Peruvian jail? I hope so...
umm..peruvian prison=hell good luck dushhbag...
28 years????????????????? why didn't he get life? Does Peru not give life in prison? 28 years is nothing for sicko like him.
I'm pretty happy he got that kind a sentence. I think is a born massmurderer and i hope he will not get send to a dutch prison somewhile, cause the prisons over here are like 4 star hotels. Xbox, playstation, movie's ..... I hope he will rott in hell over there. But i think he will do good in a Peru prison cause he's almost 2 meters in lenght , a lot bigger than the most prisoners over there.
Bye bye Joran!
just not long enough! He should die in prison. If he's released in 28 years he'll only be 52 and can go back to what he's been doing for the last 5 years. Do people really believe that he only killed Holloway and Flores and that they weren't just the only times he screwed up?
