Van der Sloot sentenced to 28 years in prison for Peru murder

Joran van der Sloot on Friday was sentenced to 28 years in a Peruvian prison for the 2010 murder of 21-year-old Stephany Flores.

With credit for time served, his sentence would end on June 10, 2038.

He was also ordered to pay about $74,500 to the victim's family.

On Wednesday, the 24-year-old Dutch national confessed to the charges of "qualified murder" and simple robbery.

It was an apparent attempt to win a more lenient sentence, using a plea called an "anticipated conclusion of the process" under Peruvian law.

Under sentencing guidelines, the panel of judges could have ordered van der Sloot imprisoned for as much as 30 years.

Police say van der Sloot murdered Flores in his Lima hotel room in May 2010, then took money and bank cards from her wallet and fled to Chile, where he was arrested a few days later.

Investigators believe he killed the Peruvian woman after she found something related to the case of missing Alabama teenager Natalee Holloway on van der Sloot's computer while she was visiting him in his hotel room.

Van der Sloot was among the last people seen with Holloway, 18, before she went missing on the island of Aruba in 2005. He was detained twice, but never charged, in Holloway's disappearance.

The girl's body has never been found.

Alabama Probate Judge Alan King on Thursday signed an order declaring Holloway legally dead.

Van der Sloot faces possible extradition to the United States in a matter tied to Holloway's disappearance and her family.

In June 2010, a federal grand jury in Alabama indicted him on charges of wire fraud and extortion after allegations surfaced that he tried to extort $250,000 from Holloway's mother, Beth. Van der Sloot offered to provide what turned out to be bogus information about the whereabouts of Holloway's remains in exchange for the money, according to the indictment.

He was allegedly given a total of $25,000, and authorities believe he used that money to travel to Peru and participate in a poker tournament, where he met Flores.

Still deserves life, or death. However, I doubt the Peruvian lifer's will take kindly to a Dutch citizen murdering one of their women. They'll be raping him in jail if not slicing his throat.

What's wrong with you all and CNN? He can qualify to get out in 9 years and could serve possibly 14 years with "good behavior". That is, he can watch TV for about 10 years or so, then get deported. Is this 28 years in prison? Apparently, brutalizing and robbing a young girl does not fall into a category of aggravated murder that provides for a real life sentence.

Peruvian law isn't the same as the States. He'll serve the 28 years, there's no 'good behavior'.

Sadly, those are the sentencing guidelines in Peru. As far as I'm concerned, and probably a lot of other people here, he deserves to spend the rest of his life in a deep, dark hole and never see a single ray of sunlight ever again.

What's wrong with us? What's wrong with you? "He can serve 9 years and get out of prison in 14 years with good behavior". How does that work? Serve 9 years and get out with good behavior? Or serve 14 years then get out with good behavior? Which is it? And what makes you an expert in Peruvian law? Are you a lawyer? Do you even have a job? Now take your meds and stop babbling.

In 28 years, is Stephanie Flores going to somehow mysteriously reappear, upon his release with payback?

I am from Peru and can tell you there is no getting out in 10 years for good behabiour and there is no death sentence in Peru and prison in Peru, from what my father, who's a lawyer, tells me, is way more awful than your prisons in the US.

Extra sad that it was Natalee's mom that gave him the money to travel to Peru to kill the next girl.

I agree. And I don't think we should extradite him until after he serves his murder sentence. what's the point? if we wait until then we can send him to prison again.

Poetic justice, don't you think? It was her money that made him end up in prison in Peru. Took another life to make it happen, but he got what was coming finally.

He wont make it past five years in a Peruvian prison. I would prefer the death penalty over spending a month in one of these facilities. Death just puts them out of their misery.

He apparantly survived so far and from the looks of him, he seems to be doing fine. The guy is an evil being, and those types find ways to survive in places like where he is.

Now that's what really happened. Sloot travels to Peru. The girls tried to blackmail him. He kills her (who wouldn't, really). it's the same thing as with the former IMF boss.

He blackmailed the Holloway family for 10,000 for information leading to discovering the body, an then ran off to Peru to play in a poker tournament. Using your own statement, maybe he should have been killed and this 2nd murder would never have happened. He's a sick puppy tat should have been put down a long time ago.

28 years in a prison in Peru is worse that life in a prison in the US! Look how bad he looks after one year. I wish he would tell the truth about Natalee Holloway but don't believe that will ever happen. However, if he did not kill her....well, who knows for sure?

seems the tactic did not work.....should have rolled the dice with a trial. I am sure that after he finishes his lawsuit on the extradition claim, he will sue his lawyer for inadequate representation (if their courts provide for such a claim)

What incriminating evidence about his involvement with Holloway is on his computer that Flores apparently died for? Is it evidence that he may have murdered her or is it evidence related to the extortion? Even if he erased it, it may be recoverable.
