Family releases first post-crash pic of pileup victim

The family of a Brazilian teenager who was injured in a multivehicle wreck in Florida last month - a wreck that killed at least 11 people, including four of her relatives, amid dense fog and smoke from a brush fire - has released the first post-crash picture of her exclusively to CNN.

Lidiane Carmo, 15, is progressing at Shands at the University of Florida hospital, where she has been since the January 29 wreck on I-75 outside Gainesville, one of her uncles said.

The case of Lidiane, who has lived in the United States for most of her life, drew widespread attention after church members said she was an illegal immigrant, and they were afraid she could face deportation. But federal officials said last week that she would be allowed to stay in the United States.

Her father, Jose Carmo, was a pastor at International Church of the Restoration in Marietta, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta. Lidiane came to the United States from Brazil when she was only 2, another pastor at the church told CNN; the family stayed in the United States after their visas expired, CNN affiliate WSB reported.

Jose Carmo; his wife, Adriana; their daughter Leticia; Jose's brother Edsom Carmo; and a companion were killed the in the wreck. Edsom Carmo was driving one of the church's vans.

The Carmo family's bodies were transported to Marietta on Wednesday, and a funeral is scheduled for Monday at a separate Atlanta-area church. Lidiane wants to attend but cannot leave the hospital, her uncle said.

"She is like any regular American girl. (But) she wasn't born here," the Rev. Aron Amazonas said last week. "She acts like an American girl. She almost can't speak the Portuguese language. She doesn't know the people there."

You are horrible! This poor young woman lost an entire family....can you even begin to imagine how that feels? Obviously not because any normal person would be affected by this story. No matter what the nationality, she is a human being and her life will be forever impacted by this horrible tragedy. So why do you care that her heritage was put into this article. Really? That is what you zeroed in on?

God be with her through this life changing time in her life.

Apparently you cared enough to read it and comment on it being the ignorant moron that you are. Please...I beg of you, don't breed and contribute to the human gene pool.

gumbalay has apologized. That is very big of him/her. We all say things sometimes without realizing the effect it may have or the perception we are putting forward.

I'm glad the poor kid is doing well. It's bad enough to lose your entire family in an accident but then have buttheads like you two making comments ... It's not that I care so much or that she's Hispanic. It's just nice that she's recovering.

CNN didn't need to release any information about the girl being an illegal immigrant. It shouldn't be relevant considering the headline reads something entirely different. That was done on purpose to drive some hidden agenda on behalf of the reporter/editor of this story. Speaking simply as a human being, the FL interstate incident is a tragedy for anyone involved in it. I'm glad to see she's smiling and healing despite her tremendous loss. P.S. You are = you're, not your.

Why is she allowed to stay in the US?? Just because she lost her family, that is not a good enough reason for her to be given citizenship for no reason!! I feel bad for her but c'mon, as if she is the only ILLEGAL immigrant who had family killed in the US

She isn't being deported because that wouldn't help the situation at all. And just because you are cold and dead on the inside doesn't mean everyone else is.

Gina – CNN only reports the news, the church she belonged to reported this to the press because they were fearful she would be deported. Here in the state of Ga., a case was brought against an illegal, who like this girl, was brought here at a very young age. She was thrown out of the local college because of her status. ICE has, since this accident, said she will be allowed to stay in the country. So, it is relevant because in this backward state, she could have lost her family AND be forced to be sent back to a country she does not know. That is news, so CNN did do its job of reporting it.

@ Mary – Thanks for the background info. Not being familiiar with the situation you mentioned, it seemed unnecessary for CNN to report on her status. I just find it saddening to see how heartless some can be regarding another human being, especially upon hearing she's from another country or an illegal immigrant.

It is so sad to see that there are people out there that have zero compassion for the human race! We are all humans,we cannot help where we are born, what nationality we are born into and what religion we are born into. Why do so many feel it is their place to judge others? There are so many people who choose to continue to kick people when they are down. Have you ever lost your entire immediate family? If you have never walked in the same shoes, who are you to judge or make harsh comment? If that was you, how would it make you feel to read horrible comments from people who did not know you or your story. It is a wonderful thing that we can be free to comment whatever is on our minds, but please be responsible when doing so!

Wow, you right wingers need to relax about the "liberal media". Don't believe everything you hear from the "conservative" media and you may learn something. Like Brazilians are not Hispanic;. that illegals don't get beneftis from the governement (that is how you get caught), yet they pay taxes; and unless you are working the fields, or busing tables, chances are they are not stealing your job.

Its so sickening to see all the haters that want to give this 15 year old child a kick in the ass after what she just went through. The girl was brought here when she was only two years old for crying out loud! SHE HAD NO CHOICE TO COME TO USA, HER PARENTS MADE THAT CHOICE FOR HER! She is just as American as anyone else born in the US. Mireya describes these pathetic individuals perfectly, ice cubes in the veins!

I bet her family has worked much harder than the average spoiled fat American...The comments on here relating to her race are uneducated and quite frankly full of racism. If you guys don't like illegals coming then maybe YOU should volunteer to do the work (labor for next to nothing) they do here in America...Doubt you would last a day. This comment was made from an average Caucasian American Conservative woman :o) I just know you'd assume it was a liberal thing to say :0)
