Family releases first post-crash pic of pileup victim

The family of a Brazilian teenager who was injured in a multivehicle wreck in Florida last month - a wreck that killed at least 11 people, including four of her relatives, amid dense fog and smoke from a brush fire - has released the first post-crash picture of her exclusively to CNN.

Lidiane Carmo, 15, is progressing at Shands at the University of Florida hospital, where she has been since the January 29 wreck on I-75 outside Gainesville, one of her uncles said.

The case of Lidiane, who has lived in the United States for most of her life, drew widespread attention after church members said she was an illegal immigrant, and they were afraid she could face deportation. But federal officials said last week that she would be allowed to stay in the United States.

Her father, Jose Carmo, was a pastor at International Church of the Restoration in Marietta, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta. Lidiane came to the United States from Brazil when she was only 2, another pastor at the church told CNN; the family stayed in the United States after their visas expired, CNN affiliate WSB reported.

Jose Carmo; his wife, Adriana; their daughter Leticia; Jose's brother Edsom Carmo; and a companion were killed the in the wreck. Edsom Carmo was driving one of the church's vans.

The Carmo family's bodies were transported to Marietta on Wednesday, and a funeral is scheduled for Monday at a separate Atlanta-area church. Lidiane wants to attend but cannot leave the hospital, her uncle said.

"She is like any regular American girl. (But) she wasn't born here," the Rev. Aron Amazonas said last week. "She acts like an American girl. She almost can't speak the Portuguese language. She doesn't know the people there."

I'm praying for a speedy andcomplete recovery for this precious 15 year old. She's been blessed to grow up in the U.S.A. I'll also be prayingfor her adoption by a wonderful faith-filled family. P.S. Drumcode: there is a God and He allowed you to wake up this morning.

Yeah apparently there's a God that also didn't let her whole family wake up as well.

David, please allow people their comfort. There needs to be moderation in both the religious and nonreligious alike. Let's just allow everyone their say in matters of the afterlife.

Again as I have said in other posts–for those of you who feel the need to be cruel and make sick and disgusting remarks–WHY DO YOU HIDE BEHIND YOU SCREEN ALIASES?? PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE IDENTIFY YOURSELF WITH YOUR REAL NAME AND CONTACT INFORMATION. Oh wait, I know why you don't–you wouldn't be anonymous and couldn't continue to hide behind your screen names from which you make your cowardly statements. I wish people would grow a pair and stand behind what they say with who they really are. Disgusting of what this society has come to. Oh yeah–my name is Max Flores from Placentia, CA.

It's always amazing to me that, when faced with road conditions like really heavy rain or fog, people seem to speed up, to go faster, like that would make everything better. The right thing to do is to pull over for awhile, or even turn around and go back to where you came from.

Great. Another illegal allowed to stay and suck up welfare dollars. I suppose we're paying for her hospital stay, so we might as well continue with the 10 kids she's bound to have in the next few years.

okay, lets play nice and fair here. Please identify which part of your dollar went to this girl as a result of her illegal status? Can you please identify the dollar amount? In this way, you will be refunded for what you actually paid. I'm waiting for your reply. Please provide an address so I can send a check to you.

I have no idea how much her hospital bill will be, but have her parents been paying school taxes? Road taxes? Income taxes? What have they done when someone got sick? I'll bet they ran to their local emergency room, gave a fake address, and sucked up the "free" healthcare.

It's a darn good thing they don't all send us back where we came from... half of me would go to ireland, a quarter to scotland, an eighth to germany, a sixteenth to somewhere in asia and a sixteenth to somewhere in africa. Then again, as long as I am from the right part of Ireland most of me an stay in one peice and just claim "uk"

A young lady loses her entire family, and is horribly injured in a multi-vehicle accident on a road that never should have been reopened (the police closed it earlier), and all many of you can think of is "who will pay the bill?" Her dad was a full-time pastor. Maybe they had insurance. Otherwise, I'm sure she'll have plenty of money to pay the hospital after they sue the state police for reopening an unsafe road w/zero visibility. In other words, be happy if all you have to pay for are her medical bills. Bests wishes for the girl's speedy recovery and strength in dealing with her horrific loss. Anyone who would throw her out of the only country she knows, after what she has been through, is heartless enough to support the Tea Party. TP, you belong on a roll in a trucker's bathroom stall.

First off, I'm glad the innocent YOUNG girl is okay. Secondly, how cruel do you have to be to be thinking how she came to the country illegally?! She just lost her world not to mention the immense physical pain she has to be experiencing. I come from a family of military and we have a monstrous amount of patriotism, but this is cruel. We should take pride that people are striving to live the "American dream" you all crush it. We all complain about illegal immigrants but the truth is, most of these "aliens" just want a chance to work hard to make a living. This is not directed towards anyone specifically, but think about how bad you'd feel to have your world ripped away and then having to witness how cruel the people you'd give your life to live amongst hate you for not being deported. This really disappoints me, to see that some of you are only worried about her deportation not her life. Since when did a human life become so meaningless?

Let's take emotion and "think how bad you'd feel" out of it and think rationally. How much do illegals cost us each year? They use our hospitals, drive on our roads, their spawn go to our school, they steal social security numbers to get welfare and work, fail to get insurance and drive away when they hit our cars...the list goes on and on. Who's paying for them? Well, if you pay taxes, you are. The bleeding hearts will always feel. The rest of us need to combat it by thinking.

Puerto Rico is not Brazil. Puerto Ricans speak Spanish and Brazilians speak Portuguese.

Here is your reading comprehension lesson:
Read the article closely so that when you spout your venom you can sound a little bit more informed.

First of all, alomsot all of us are immigrants. Secondly, this girl, if she came here at 2 yrs old, didn't intentially break any laws based on her own decisions.
And finally, this girl was a passenger and had nothing to do with the car accident !!.... why don't you show some compassion for a 15 year old who suffered major injuries and lost all of her immediate family instead of being a heartless bigot !
