Family releases first post-crash pic of pileup victim

The family of a Brazilian teenager who was injured in a multivehicle wreck in Florida last month - a wreck that killed at least 11 people, including four of her relatives, amid dense fog and smoke from a brush fire - has released the first post-crash picture of her exclusively to CNN.

Lidiane Carmo, 15, is progressing at Shands at the University of Florida hospital, where she has been since the January 29 wreck on I-75 outside Gainesville, one of her uncles said.

The case of Lidiane, who has lived in the United States for most of her life, drew widespread attention after church members said she was an illegal immigrant, and they were afraid she could face deportation. But federal officials said last week that she would be allowed to stay in the United States.

Her father, Jose Carmo, was a pastor at International Church of the Restoration in Marietta, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta. Lidiane came to the United States from Brazil when she was only 2, another pastor at the church told CNN; the family stayed in the United States after their visas expired, CNN affiliate WSB reported.

Jose Carmo; his wife, Adriana; their daughter Leticia; Jose's brother Edsom Carmo; and a companion were killed the in the wreck. Edsom Carmo was driving one of the church's vans.

The Carmo family's bodies were transported to Marietta on Wednesday, and a funeral is scheduled for Monday at a separate Atlanta-area church. Lidiane wants to attend but cannot leave the hospital, her uncle said.

"She is like any regular American girl. (But) she wasn't born here," the Rev. Aron Amazonas said last week. "She acts like an American girl. She almost can't speak the Portuguese language. She doesn't know the people there."

I have a feeling Beth and I have the same opinion on OWS as well. I would gladly take a trip to each major city and blast away all the tents with one gigantic fart. This would finish the job the police can't get done because they are too afraid of the lamestream media. My fart would have the added benefit of creating such a putrid smell that no one would return to the encampment.

And I would proudly join you, Farty McC. I would stand beside you, drop trou, and rip one off at the leftover hippies and mom's basement dwellers. Good question: why don't they occupy a job?

People just keep on believing what they want (or are misled about). Most of the "Occupy" people have jobs. Studies of the movement's participants found that to be the reality. Even more telling is that a greater number of "Occupiers" are employed than Tea Party activists. I, too, am currently unemployed due to the ravages of the Wall Street wreckage. The protest is righteous. We need control of our future taken from the exclusive hands of the wealthy. It has been said that poor people have really sh..tty lobbyists (that means none).

As a side note, my wife worked at a large local greenhouse which hired a lot of seasonal Mexican workers. She said they performed jobs no one else would do, and worked extremely hard. She (and the owner) were very impressed. He hires them back every year AND they pay taxes into the system. They buy local commodities which they pay taxes on, too. Someone has really done a nasty job of getting gullible people to make villains out of good people. The worst part of all of this is that facts will NOT change your mind. You are doomed to live the perceptions you want to believe.

I think illegal immigrants (or, as I like to call them, human beings) are more american than most Americans who were born here. Most of them work much harder.

Vote Obama 2012. The Republicans have lost their minds, and we need to save public education so people like Anne can graduate and learn something. Ignorance can make you blind.

I agree with Beth, but in this case I see a young girl who lost everthing and a long road of recovery to come. Compare this to the lives that were lost in Iraq and the money spent with no appreciation and its a no brainer.

    Anne,

First, that's "Puerto" Rico and IF she were from there she technically could argue she is an American because it's a U.S. Territory, second, she didn't come from Puerto Rico...she came from Brazil, and third, her family didn't cause the accident so why would they need to pay any clean up? The accident was on the interstate near my Florida home and was due to a mix of fog and smoke from a brush fire and happened because the highway patrol opened back up a highway with low visibility. If anyone should pay for that it's the FHP/State of Florida. Get your facts straight before you start ripping into someone.

So, because we feel sympathy for her, we should pay her hospital bill, her education, etc. until she is 18+. All things many American citizens don't get. Many of those American citizens have sob stories too. I am sympathetic to illegal aliens, but I also understand that the US is unable to stretch it's resources to cover the people that are here legally. I do have a problem when illegal aliens have access to medical care and education that actual US citizens don't.

Yet no one argues that point regarding the wars. Interesting. It is easier to argue for taking a life than saving it.

      From an online dictionary:

      "post-
a prefix, meaning “behind,” “after,” “later,” “subsequent to,” “posterior to,” occurring originally in loanwords from Latin ( postscript ), but now used freely in the formation of compound words ( post-Elizabethan; postfix; postgraduate; postorbital )."

Post, as in "after." Post-crash photo = photo after crash. Is this not a photo of the young girl after the crash?

Umm ok & noe & others on here are disgusting heartless & incorrect individuals! Im sorry to inform you, but 15 year old CHILDREN do not pay bills, nor should they. She is a CHILD that has become an ORPHAN; no matter if she was legal or not, the state would pay the ORPHAN'S Hospital bills, as it should do. I hope she is adopted by someone from her church, wich would make her a citizen. And NO, a 2 year old child shouldnt be prosecuted for a crime they didnt commit. I hope she deals well with her loss.

She should be arrested for willfully being here illegally. Driving on our highways illegally possibly is grounds for charging them for the wrongful deaths of the real citizens who lost their lives just by her and her families mere presence here. She is an unfortunate living example of why these illegal immigrants need to be prosecuted to the fullest because of ALL the problems they bring to us to deal with. Oh and I bet it is safe to assume her home country isn't paying a dime for her care nor is she or her worthless family. I bet we and the surviving members of the crash she helped create are. She is the poster child of the leeches in our society.

Because social norms forbid us to express our true thoughts and emotions. It has become so bad these days that one could go to jail for expressing ones opinions in the wrong company. This, Dave, is the beauty of the internet. We are free to express our rage and pent up angst even if its contrary to popular belief; We are free to express ourselves without fear of retaliation. WHY IS THERE SO MANY PEOPLE OUT THERE THAT STILL DO NOT UNDERSTAND THIS!!!!!
