Greenpeace: "Xena" actress arrested after protest on drilling ship

Actress Lucy Lawless, famous for starring in the television show "Xena: Warrior Princess," was arrested along with six other Greenpeace activists early Monday for boarding a drilling ship last week in New Zealand, according to Greenpeace. She and the others who were aboard the ship without permission were released shortly after their arrest, the activist organization said.

CNN.com spoke with Lawless on Friday while she was having a restless night on the Noble Discoverer, a ship leased to Shell Oil. The ship was docked in the Port of Taranaki when the actress and other activists, on behalf of Greenpeace, made it on board to protest drilling in the Arctic.

The group was able to display signs on the Discoverer's 174-foot drilling tower. One sign said "Stop Shell #SaveTheArctic."

Lawless told CNN on Friday that she expected to be arrested for the stunt but that she and the others intended to remain on the ship for as long as possible. She stressed that exchanges between them and authorities had been peaceful.

"We feel very much that what happens in the Arctic doesn't stay in the Arctic anymore," Lawless said. "An oil spill can never be cleaned up because of the remoteness and the freezing temperatures. We risk trashing whole ecosystems and poisoning them from plankton on up. It's absolutely unthinkable."

Nah not really, at least not without some makeup. That's not a flattering picture of you at all.

High speed and bullet trains can eliminate using fossile fuel for much or most of domestic aviation. The fuel left over can be put more into the gasoline distillates in order to expand its availability and improve its efficiency. The trains can be run much more efficiently by nuclear plants. (sorry... solar and wind can't generate enough power). Solar plants can generate Hydrogen for future auto technologies (actually already in existance).

Correct, and I just saw a City Bus in El Paso, TX that is converted to Natural Gas. We only need to convert 1/3 of gasoline engines to LNG to eliminate any need for Middle-East oil. But we must continue middle-east wars to continue importing middle-east? – NOT. Evil at play. Oilmen at play. You will find no difference.

bullet trains will take decades to build and cost 100s of billions of dollars-not feasible-and unless they can do the trip in half teh time technology will allow, no one will use them

they should of kept her in jail. Breaking laws only shows ignorance. There are more effective ways to get your point across without looking like an idiot. Her t-shirt should of said, "Im with stupid".

IIF you really feel that way go down and tell Shell oil that. THEY continuously break laws without the slightest thought. I admire her for at least putting herself in a position to DO something.

One way of avoiding to look like an idiot is to know the difference between a preposition and a verb. ;-)

Not taking any side in this discussion (for now), but I am a bit concerned that Shell is being bashed as a typical greedy American oil company, when in fact it is Dutch.

They deserve it...look at their history of exploitation in South America. They are notorious for making a mess and figuring out how to get away with doing as little as possible to clean it up. They are supposed to be bashed along with all the others.

      VoR,

You can't really expect the far left to actually do research or check facts. They are fact averse.

This should be a wake up call for bullies. You better think twice before you open your mouth or type with your fingers; YOU may end up the loser. Consider yourselves on notice and warned.

Last I checked, New Zealand was a lot closer to the Antarctic Ocean than the Artcic Ocean. They're wearing the wrong t-shirts in the photos; off by thousands of miles.

Uh you are allowed to support a cause that isn't right next door to you. And a major spill anywhere in the ocean effects the ocean elsewhere. Something about how they are all connected or something. But what do I know, I'm a left-winger and maps and facts confuse me.

I admire her for sticking to her beliefs. I don't care if she broke the law. Oil companies do that all the time while they strip our earth of natural resources. It was a peaceful confrontation. Point made.
