Texas 'navy' to patrol the Rio Grande

Texas is getting its own navy.

Next month, the state's Department of Public Safety will deploy the first of a fleet of six gunboats on the Rio Grande, the river that forms the border between the state and Mexico, CNN affiliate WFAA-TV reports.

The 34-foot-long boats, each powered by three, 300-horsepower outboard engines, will have bulletproof plating and six machine guns apiece, not unlike the river patrol boats the U.S. Navy used during the Vietnam War.

The vessels will be able to operate in as little as 2 feet of water, according to the report, and will work with U.S. Customs and Border Protection to combat drug smuggling coming across the Rio Grande.

"They're finding out when those people are coming across, and one of the things they need to be able to do is interdict them on the water," Texas state Rep. Paul Workman told CNN affiliate KVUE-TV when the first of the boats, the JD Davis, was christened in December.

"If you're trying to suppress organized smuggling activity, there's no substitute for putting people on the ground," Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steven C. McCraw said at the December ceremony. "The way they're operating right now, you need them on the water as well."

"It sends a message: Don't mess with Texas," Jose Rodriguez, a regional commander of the Texas Department of Safety, told WFAA.

The six boats will be named after Texas state troopers killed in the line of duty. The first was named after Jerry Don Davis, who was shot and killed in 1980. Another, to be commissioned Thursday in Austin, will be named in honor of  trooper David Irvine Rucker, who was killed in 1981, according to The Brownsville Herald.

    Some sad, misinformed, ignorant, racists up in here. Imagine that??? You all had better focus in on keeping the GOP/REPS out of the Presidency. Or you will have much more than border security to worry about... If they have their way, your salary and incomes will be much more like the Mexicans you are all crying about!

      This irresponsible actions will cause nothing but trouble to American Christian missionaries preaching the Gospel in cartel controlled gettos along the border. This true patriots will pay for this political move. When we stopped trusting the power of God?

      Texas Highway Patrol is the name of the agency that owns the boats. They put that on everything they operate. It doesn't matter if it's on water of on the roads.

      @Content , Texas IS broke, to the tune of 26 BILLION dollars last year. Texas is not in a good state with Perry in command, time to thin the herd in Austin, starting with Perry. Anyone stupid enough t purchase militarized equipment for the police should be investigated for official oppression.

    So the highway patrol has jurisdiction on a river that borders another country? I would have thought ICE should be patrolling these waters. Finally, are states allowed to have military grade vehicles like this?

    Wouldn't it make more sense for ICE or even the Coast Guard to do this? Why would the highway patrol be doing anything that requires a heavily armed gunboat?

    This kind of actions are irresponsible is not forgetting Texas something? Don't they know that there are American Christian missionaries spreading the Good News among the poor and needy in cartel hcontrolled gettos. This kind of actions only put Christians in a very dire position and makes almost impossible to preach about peace and love. Some more guns won't stop the cartels anyways.Preaching the Gospel will. God bless the true patriots our Christan missionaries.

    Deploy federal armed forces on US soil? Apparently some of you don't know about Posse Comitatus Act. But having a state patrol a dual Federal/State border with a gunboat is ....uncomfortable. The state could commit an act of war that would obligate the nation to act.

      Mike, you are absolutely correct. The bigger question is, when the cartels engage this weapons platform and take it away from the DPS troopers, what are we going to do then? I do agree with your idea though, when the first shot is fired across the border, it will be an international incident.

      "so be it" really??? so you advocate the armed incursion into the borders of another nation? But you hate the idea of illegals swimming over here..

    Good for Texas! Just like AZ, doing the job that the federal "government" won't do because they are too busy with contraception and abortion. Ironically, two things that they should NOT be involved in.

      "As being a proud Texas Resident even though i was born an raised in Southern California i can tell you Illegal immigrents weather there Hispanic or other race is a serious problem .."

      Ironically, that's precisely what the Mexican residents of everything west of the Mississippi said about the slave holding Southerners who were spilling into their country in the early 19th CE. Of course, they were right – the new immigrants ultimately revolted, brought in a neighboring country's army and took the land away from the country which had graciously invited in these settlers. States with Spanish names like Texas, New Mexico, Colorado and (Alta) California still bear witness to this theft.

      Perhaps the reason the residents of these states are so nervous about immigrants is because they recognize that justice is not on their side, that payback can be hell? Perhaps when they fear that someone will come steal their land and their livelihoods, it's little more than a historical projection.

      @texmex?..wow..you better educate yourself..

      First off we do not need to be in the middle east forcing..and pushing the values of western society on anyone there..if you wouldn't feel comfortable with muslims pushing their laws on you..don't push yours on them..

      And secondly "democracy"..bwhahahaha..only if you are Jewish..and not an African Jew..palastian or muslim..

      why is it that Israel's laws read like pre segregation and apartied laws if they are a democracy?..why have they built a huge wall equipted with machine gun towers to keep the palastinians off their own land?

      Democracy there is only for Jewish peoples..and their laws do nothing to protect the palastinians from their abuse..do you just think those people just up and decided to hate those people for no apparent reason?

      The Jewish people have went through a lot..but now they are trying to inflict what they went through on other people.

      Here in America..some of them have openly expressed their hate for indigenous peoples..being advocates of ending indigenous tribal sovereignty..all the while they are the biggest proponents in making sure America sends money to Israel so that their "tribe" can live in what is considered their homeland..even after being absent for a couple thousand years..all the while Natives here have and will always be here..

      AIPAC has their wallets openly donating money and free educational trips to members of our congress to support their cause..but yet nobody see a problem with that..I call it bribery..I for one will never support us being allies with Israel..until they change THEIR BIGOTED WAYS..

      Havana I know exactly what I'm saying and history proves me right remember the bombing of the Osirak reactor back in 1981 the Israelis did it and the Americans finished the job years later when they bested Saddam Hussein so we always protect our ally Israel, so stop reading all that manipulated Cuban histo ry you no longer in LaHavana

      @frharry.

      It never ceases to amaze me how the loonies in the Mexica movement always claim all of these states as "Aztlan." It's not just that these are territories that Mexico lost to the United States.. but also every single one of them Mexico acquired from Spain.. If you know your history then you know it was Spain that wiped out the Aztec Empire..and committed the worst genocide on Native Americans that took place in the "Americas".. So how is it that "Aztlan" is being represented based on former Imperial Spanish lands.. it took by force and genocide from the tribes in those states ..?
      Also it should be remembered that the Apache.. Chumash, Navajo etc etc were and still are the real owners of those lands. and they are people who still exist today.. and are still the only ones who can claim these lands truly belong to them.

      Mexico and the Mexican people have no more right to claim these lands then do whites and the United States. They are both colonial powers that inherited lands from European powers.. or took them by force and genocide themselves..

      This article is not about immigrants. It's about drug trafficking. Not that it's related but since pretty sure if you researched your genealogy, you would find you are also from immigrants.

      Where do you think the interest you pay on credit cards goes? Check who owns those companies. Check who the biggest stockholders are. Where do you think the money you spend on all that hollywood stuff goes. Check who owns those companies. Check who owns the banks and ask yourself who REALLY got bailed out. Check oout who owns your mortgage – do you know how many times your mortgage was sold on the secondary mortgage market – do you know who owns your mortgage now.
