Coroner: Houston drowned after cocaine use

Whitney Houston died from an accidental drowning in a hotel bathtub, but the "effects of atherosclerotic heart disease and cocaine use" were contributing factors in her death, the Los Angeles County Coroner said in an autopsy report released Thursday.

Houston, 48, was "found submerged in bathtub filled with water" and "no trauma or foul play is suspected," the coroner said.

The toxicology tests found other drugs in her body, including marijuana, the anti-anxiety drug Xanax, the muscle relaxant Flexeril and the allergy medicine Benadryl, the report said. But these drugs "did not contribute to the death," it said.

The final coroner report is expected to be made public within two weeks, the coroner said.

Houston died February 11 in her room at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California, the day before the music industry gathered for the annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles.

Xanex, marijuana, a muscle relaxant, and diphenhydramine. That combination would knock out an elephant. It's sad, but I'd say the drugs indirectly caused the death. I was afraid she just fell asleep and drown since I heard reports she was found under-water in the tub. It would seem that is the case. =( One would think the cocaine would keep her up, but if she was coming down that would just add to the tiredness.

So if Whitney wasn't in a bathtub with water in it she would be alive today?

No then she would have died of a drug overdose, druggies just die, only reason she drowned was she was dieing from drugs and passed out and died quicker because her head went under water and she drowned, is just a way to say the hop head OD ed and killed herself for a Hi.

Most likely. She probably had sleeping issues due to cocaine abuse and she used other drugs to counter-act that. diphenhydramine is used for a sleep aid. That is exactly what Tylenol's Simply Sleep is. Just so happens it is primarily used as an allergy medicine. Xanex, marijuana, a muscle relaxant, and a sleep aid. I get tired just thinking about that combination in a body.

"Cocaine and metabolites were identified and contributory to her death"
What metabolites, mr. reporter? Drug metabolites like hydrocodone or vitamins that reacted to other substances?
At any rate – yes people – drugs kill you eventually. Teens have died from heart attacks brought on by cocaine.
Maybe Governor Christie should have lowered the flag to 1/4 mast instead of half since drugs were involved.

*shaking my head* looks like Dr. Gupta needs to do an educational special on what autopsy findings, toxicology reports, suicide vs. accidental death, etc mean. Please, Sanjay, save us from the masses!

This should be used in a commercial like was used with "this is your brain on drugs." Use Whitney as an example of how this stuff can just ruin not only your life, but millions of others.

Whitney Houston died where the heck was I. Oops forgot I was making some smack in my BATHTUB. Was she a singer or actress or just just a dope head. Wasn't she married to Robbie Red or someone. I swore she was rescued by that bodyguard guy and wasn't she just on SNL getting high to go to Target. I gotta wake up earlier or something I miss all the good stuff. Help I've fallen asleep in my tub and can't get out.

In order for cocaine to be deemed contributory to death by the corner, the amount in the system needs to be at a higher level than just residual from a habitual user that maybe hasn't used in a few days. If it's contributory, it was recently used.
