USS Enterprise heads to Persian Gulf

The carrier group is heading to the Gulf and our CNN national security experts note that this is a typical Navy maneuver that happens as carrier groups rotate to new positions around the globe.

This is the final deployment for the Enterprise, which will be inactivated and eventually decommissioned, according to a Navy press release.

This does come at a time that relations with Iran are fraying. We called the Navy today to ask if there is any connection. They did not get back to us right away. If they do, we will update this.

Do you know anything about the mission of the carrier group? Do you have a view on U.S.-Iran relations? Comment below.

There are now 3 carrier groups in the area–two will be in the gulf, one just outside. That's about 27 ships, more or less, and 240 airplanes. I think that's enough to frighten Iran. I'm not clear if that's enough to start a war.

240 planes and 27 ships is more than enough to start a war, but probably not nearly enough to sustain one. You have to imagine the chain of events. The U.S. or Israel attacks the Iranian nuclear facilities. The Iranian Navy responds by mining the Strait of Oman. The U.S. attempts to clear the mines. The Iranian Air Force and Navy attacks the U.S. vessels. And so forth and so on, ad infinitum.

Lost in all this is that the U.S.' long-term best interest will be served when the Iranian people decide they've had enough of the mullahs running the lives. However, any attack on Iran will drive the Iranian people into greater support of the mullah run Iranian government, so an attack really has to be the worst possible outcome.

If Iran is determined to obtain nuclear weapons, there really isn't anything the U.S. and Israel can do to absolutely prevent it. They can only delay it, and in so doing, they will actually ensure it eventually happens because the attack itself will be the proof that Iran needs to be nuclear armed to deter attacks.

The great fear is that a nuclear armed Iran will provide those weapons to terrorists like Hezbollah. As a practical matter, no one in the world would seriously question where a nuclear weapon unleashed in Israel originated, and Iran knows that. Ergo, letting anyone outside of Iran get its hands on an Iranian nuke would be tantamount to Iran committing national suicide. That is unthinkable, because what the mullahs want is to control the destiny of their own rule. Clearly, they cannot rule a radioactive ash heap. If anything since the Iranian Revolution ought to be obvious, it is that the Iranian clergy are shrewd and calculating, and have placed the survival of their regime as their highest priority.

This isn't a move to start a war. Consider it pressure on Iran, Obama's political advisers would have a fit; no way Obama initiates an extensive military action before elections. However, the release was obviously done on purpose. That probably means that the deployment schedule was bumped up which, if that happens to be true, means that for a period of time, the US will have an extra battle group in the area. That means whatever the mission turns out to be, there is enough force to handle it. They will have their stated patrol mission as well as the unstated, power- projection missions. Given the failure to discern realistic mission goals by the White House, let's hope that this is simply a routine deployment.

    What's the mission?

Let it be Sunk while serving it's last tour. Save the tax dollars that it would cost us to have it stripped and gutted. Send the sailors home on the USS Abe.

It's just the USA flexing their muscles
If they are not willing to go against Russia and China to stop the killing in Syria then they wont do it in Iran.
But Israel is a different story if we have knowledge of a plan to attack by Israel then we may need the extra air support to either protect or evacuate our troops in the area.

"Benjamin Franklin once stated that democracy is two wolves and one lamb voting on what to have for dinner, while liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting that vote. Slowly but surely , the lambs are being disarmed while the wolves continue to sharpen their teeth ."
