The Arab League called an emergency meeting Thursday in Cairo where its ministers will take up discussion of Syria's fragile truce that shows signs of unraveling amid reports of renewed violence in flashpoint cities.
Hope for a peace plan drawn up by Kofi Annan, the U.N. point man on the Syria crisis, that calls for an end to the violence is wavering amid opposition claims that President Bashar al-Assad's security forces continue to use snipers and tanks to attack rebels in flashpoint cities.
Meanwhile, al-Assad's government is accusing the opposition of fomenting the violence, saying it foiled an attempt by "an armed terrorist group" to enter Syria from Turkey near the border village of Khirbet al-Jouz, the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency reported.
For 13 months, violence has raged between al-Assad's forces and the opposition in a lopsided battle that has seen thousands killed amid a number of international attempts to broker a peace deal.
What a shocker.
Uh-oh! An emergency meeting!! Now we're gonna get some results...
The ministers can handle it.
What will Russia blame for the hold up now?
If the regional group is getting together because Assad is breaking conditions of the cease-fire, will Russia, with Assad, blame "terrorists"?
Russia should have just sat on the sidelines and taken part with the Security Council and Arab League instead of trying to make a show of diplomatic bravado.
Who cares what Russia says or does.....Russia never give a dime in foreign aid or did anything good for any country.
Just more Arabs killing Arabs..been doing it thousands of years..won't stop no matter what
Is anyone surprised by this?
Will this "emegency meeting" mean that the arab league is going to send it's Own Troops to put this down ?
The Arab League has no one in Syria to look to as a replacement government and in no way are they capable of Nation Building, so they are trying to act as mediators between Syria and US/EURO supported rebel groups.
Not out of goodness off heart, but i n self.
interest, and to curry favor frrom US.
They want this to end fast so as to not encourage groups within their own nations, groups that many of their members were successfull in squashing.
And besides, they do not want the US pulling the same in their nations.
