Tigers outfielder arrested; hate crime investigation under way

Detroit Tigers outfielder Delmon Young was arrested in Manhattan early Friday and charged with aggravated harassment after a dispute with another man, New York police said.

Young appeared intoxicated when police arrived at the scene outside the New York Hilton, and he was treated and released from a hospital Friday morning, police Detective Martin Speechley said. The other person involved in the dispute, a 26-year-old male, sustained minor injuries but refused treatment, Speechley said.

Young was in police custody Friday morning, the detective said.

The aggravated harassment charge is a misdemeanor, but Speechley said the case is being investigated as a possible hate crime because of "religious statements made" during the dispute. If there is evidence to support a hate crime, the seriousness of the charge would be "elevated," he said.

The team issued a brief statement Friday afternoon.

"We are aware of the situation, however it is our club policy not to comment on pending legal matters," the statement said. "As we understand it, this is an allegation and we need to allow the legal process to take its course."

The Tigers are in New York for a three-game series against the Yankees beginning Friday.

The team lost to the Seattle Mariners in Detroit on Thursday afternoon before flying to New York.

Not one person addressed that he was drunk in the Morning when he has to play a game later that day. Playing with a hangover or drunk. Great role model.

I went to the same high school with this guy. He always went around hitting white babies. Onetime he told everyone he was so good at baseball because he looked at the white baseball as being a white babies head. True Story.

The problem with the country is that there are so many illiterates who are incapable of distinguishing fact from religiously influenced distortions of reality. "Threatening the President" IS a felony and it WILL be prosecuted.

    No big deal.

They stole about a $Trillion of taxpayers money in TARP and bailouts, so being called a name isn't so bad.

The worst thing a society can do it base laws on the concept of morality. It makes everything subjective. The only crimes committed here is the physical assault and the stupidity of the hate crime law and its failed attempt of legislating morality.

As every person's concept of morality differs, I tend to agree.

No hate crime here, move along folks. No black man is going to get convicted of a hate crime. Hate crimes were enacted to appease the constantly complaining black man that they are victims of hate from whites. When the roles are reversed it is ok. See Affirmative Action for example. Or our DOJ giving Black Panthers a pass when they threaten white voters. Or laws in NC and Kentucky that will reduce sentencing of minorities if they perceive racism was a factor in the trial (NOT based on the facts of the crime committed).

I think you mean Hate Crime Legislation... No white man gets pulled over for spitting out the window either - this happens to black people – they still get arrested, just sans "hate" in front of the word crime.

It seems that most US Consumers have not been out of their little 3-5mile radius neighborhoods. They know nothing of fondue, they only know of stew.

We can all spell and pronounce the word "hate" but have no conciousness of what it means.

Bruins fans of unknown ethnicity supposedly twitter a racial slur and that generates 800+ posts. I say "supposedly" because there's some evidence some tweets were fabricated to create nonexistent racism to point to a nonexistent problem as justification for more government programs and intervention.

This guy utters a blatantly ethnic slur and we're not even up to 80 posts?

Selective outrage? Come on, guilt ridden correctly indoctrinated causasion leftists, let's have some equity in our treatment of slurs!

@DH 2:17pm. Exactly as you say, and more. Also kept down are young black men raised by welfare moms. According to the NAACP, 43% of all black-Americans source of income is welfare...making these 40% unemployment young men prime candidates to serve on the front lines of battlefields. Even their al Sharpton/Jessie Jackson preachers egg them on to die for God&Country...a country said to be ruled by white racists.

43 percent. Isnt that about what Obamas approval rating is? Also, when i was in Infantry, most of the guys were white or Hispanic. Some came from good homes, some like me, not so good. The black NCOs we had were Vietnam Vets.
