Panetta: 'No kind of silver bullet' to destroy al Qaeda

Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta said there is no question that the United States is safer with Osama bin Laden, the architect of al Qaeda, dead, though he said there is no way to completely destroy the network.

Panetta's assessment came just days before the one-year anniversary of the U.S. commando raid on bin Laden's compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, that ended a manhunt for the al Qaeda founder that began following the September 11, 2001, terror attacks.

"Having been involved in operations even before bin Laden, it was clear that there is no kind of silver bullet here to suddenly be able to destroy al Qaeda and that includes going after bin Laden," Panetta told reporters Friday after a meeting with defense counterparts in South America.

"The way this works is that the more successful we are in taking down those that represent their spiritual and ideological leadership, the greater our ability to weaken their threat to this country."

The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security last week warned of the possibility of terrorist attacks leading up to and after the anniversary of the May 2, 2011, killing of bin Laden. There is no specific, credible terror threat, the agencies said.

Which country did attack America precisely & which country did Bush invade in retaliation, pray tell us? Was it Iraq, Afghanistan,Pakistan , Iran ?
What has the wars Bush started got us in return? A decade on? Thousands of American lives lost, tens of thousands of civilians killed, trillions of dollars spent & counting?
Countries like China,India,Iran & Russia benefiting from our follies. What geo-politicals goals did we achieve?

If our political leadership wakes up to reality now, we may yet avert another disaster.
Today the ex-Israeli PM Olmert took up the cudgels against Netanyahu regime for his stance on Iran, joining the Army Chief, chiefs of the spy agencies, international community and others in Israel who have been deriding his policies.
Even now if those in our Congress & establishment stand by Netanyahu's side & against America's interest & push us into another war. The American public would share the responsibility for letting this happen.

    hamsta:
I will ask this "simple minded question" one last time.

Bush had more than one chance to get OBL.
    He didn't.
Ask yourself why, and leave Obama out of your equations while you're mulling that question over.

I will even explain further: he has several chances to capture/kill/whatever OBL.
    Why didn't he?
Timelines ending the war had nothing to do with it.

I said that I will not have a conversation with you if you are going to start with the snarky comments.
IYou didn't answer the question I put to you.

Why didn't Bush capture OBL when ha had a chance to?
      He refused to.
      WHY?
If it is so simple, please tell answer me.
Saying things like "miss cantbe wrong" isn't answering the question.
I can be wrong, I frequently am; but you STILL haven't answer the question I put forth to you.

      I used no profanity.
You seem to have no problem re-typing that you answered it; just re-type the actual answer.
      Diversionary tactics do not work.

      Oh for chrissake.
Twice did the Talibans offered to hand over Osama to us & Bush refused out rightly. That would have saved us American lives & treasure.

As i told you before i already answered your simple minded question.to accuse me of using diversion tactics was wrong and came from a guilty conscience.maybe someone needs to read crackreality.com and tell banasy that her manipulative behavior of attacking me then playing the innocent role while rallying people to gang up on me mimics the behavior of a drug addict.

You have not answered the question.
You have SAID you answered it, you did not.
Saying you did isn't the same thing; you didn't.

There you go again with the assumptions that have no basis in reality.
      To quote saywhat:
"Twice did the Talibans offered to hand over Osama to us & Bush refused out rightly."

Again, hamsta, why did he refuse?
      Answer the question.

Ah yes, the old guilty conscience and drug addict ploy. You don't know, so you try to imply that someone is this or that. Just answer the question, or stop posting your rants.

You may not have been on the myriad of times that I've said it.
      Guess what, hamsta?
I've had family and friends perish on 9/11.
Don't even speak to me about those absurd theories.

I know there are many, many, many families who share my grief.
I am not hostile to them.

because you called it a useless war and if this war is useless so was ww2.alot of similarities to ww2.in both wars we were attacked and ended up fighting someone totally unrelated.saying we had no business in iraq is the same as saying we had no business invading germany.to bad we didnt use ww2 strategy.we have a bunch of wimps running the show today.we didnt allow hindu temples at pearl harbor.we didnt treat the enemy with political correctness in ww2.ww2 also happens to be the last war we won and it didnt take 11 years.i wonder why that is?could it be that we shot first and asked questions later?

Hamsta, whatever I think of war, whether I agree with you or not, attacking a person for having a difference of opinion is not going to sway opinion towards agreeing with you.
It just created hostility and deflects from any point you are trying to make.
if everyone agreed about everything, we wouldn't have any conflict, nor would we be human...
