Panetta: 'No kind of silver bullet' to destroy al Qaeda

Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta said there is no question that the United States is safer with Osama bin Laden, the architect of al Qaeda, dead, though he said there is no way to completely destroy the network.

Panetta's assessment came just days before the one-year anniversary of the U.S. commando raid on bin Laden's compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, that ended a manhunt for the al Qaeda founder that began following the September 11, 2001, terror attacks.

"Having been involved in operations even before bin Laden, it was clear that there is no kind of silver bullet here to suddenly be able to destroy al Qaeda and that includes going after bin Laden," Panetta told reporters Friday after a meeting with defense counterparts in South America.

"The way this works is that the more successful we are in taking down those that represent their spiritual and ideological leadership, the greater our ability to weaken their threat to this country."

The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security last week warned of the possibility of terrorist attacks leading up to and after the anniversary of the May 2, 2011, killing of bin Laden. There is no specific, credible terror threat, the agencies said.

Iran take over the world? Texas would stand a better chance of taking over North and Central America.

You do see what you are up against though, right, saywhat? American Christian churches teach that Irsrael is God's chosen nation. Romney's religion teaches that the Jewish Temple site is going to be moved to north America where Jesus will reign as the new king! I mean, what turnip truck?

@ philip, arent you being hypocritical just a little bit? Or are you confused? One day you are preaching religion and the next you are bashing it. Makes it very hard for the average person to figure out exactly where you stand!

@graucho iran will never be strong enough to conquer the world but it is easy to conquer a nation that sells off the military, fires the soldiers, puts the citizens on welfare and puts itself 16 trillion in debt is easy to conquer.i wish texas would take over america.what a shame the two most impoverished states now are doing better than the rest of the nation.

      Good evening @ chrissy.
@hamsta needs to vent his feelings therefore is not bound by rationale.

Enough of this Iran 'threat'. Israelis themselves, their military, their academics, intellectuals, agencies are tiring of Netanyahu & his cohorts.
And as the widely read & respected Israeli journalist Gideon Levy wrote in Haaretz on April 3rd. " Israel doesn't know when to stop & could pay dearly as a result. A time would come when America gets tired of Israel".

The Israeli Supreme court is made entirely of Freemasons who have attained to the level of Iluminati. They trample on a giant wooden cross inlaid into the floor of the Irali Supreme Court Building as they make decisions.
The true leaders of this world have little use for religions recruiting sacrifices for their god of War. If you are a member of an organized religion, be that Jew, Christian, Muslim, etc, your own government will be closing your business down, no matter where in the world. Why? As I said, because we are running out of wars and so no longer need god%Country recruits, and we notice that while you claim to be a non-profit religion, your leaders are filthy rich and your cathedrals oppulent as many members starve worldwide. Organized religion will be abolished worldwide and then there will be a declaration of 'Peace'.

*god&Country, rather. (refering to religions flying national flags during times of war, even going so far as to have members killing other members who happen to have been born in a different country. Members of the same religion facing ea. other on the battlefield of man.

I guess this is the Philip & Mary Show! It's amazing y'all don't implode from being stuffed sofull of "co.nspiracy theories"! In the spirit of the actual article I'm happy to leave National Security matters to the professionals, while I address my own life & what I want or need to accomplish! IMHO this administration has met its promise to persue & eliminate al-Qaeda operatives around the world, which makes us safer from that particular threat! However, the world can be a dangerous place, who knows when it's my turn to "check out"!? I like the Serenity Prayer because it asks me to have the wisdom to know the difference between things I can & can't change! Makes sense to me!!

@fernace its thanks to bush policies such as gitmo and waterboarding that we got bin laden.obama sure loves taking credit for the outcome even though he wanted to close gitmo and pull the troops out early.

Bush had more than one chance to get OBL.
      He didn't.
Ask yourself why, and leave Obama out of your equations while you're mulling that question over.

The troops being pulled out of Iraq was a Bush timelime.
I realize you hate Obama, but that has nothing to do with the preuordained timeline of pulling out of the ME.
I realize you hate Obama, and it's welluknown you hate Muslims, but thankfully, clearer heads prevail as to whether to let the useless war in the ME continue killing people.

@banasy you are partially correct.it was all bushes strategy and timeline.so how is obama going to take credit for the outcome considering he wanted to declare the war lost close gitmo and deem anything other than politely asking a question as torture?

You cannot have it both ways.
You cannot kvetch about Obama pulling out of the war...which you have repeatedly made fun of him for, and then turn around and give Bush the glory for it.

      Bush didn't get OBL.
      Obama did.
Bush had the opportunities to get him, and turned them down.
      Obama GOT HIM.

Again, ask yourself why Bush would not capture him, all the while starting these faux wars as an excuse, and leave Obama out of the equation.

My question is why Bush didn't get OBL when he had the opportunity to.
      Answer this one question.

sure give obama all the credit for bushes success and blame bush for all of obamas failures.that card is almost as played out as the race card.

I asked you why Bush didn't capture OBL, said NO to captuing him, when he had a chance.
      You did not answer that.

And when I am wrong, I will admit it, but I asked a question that you refuse to answer, and instead, attack me.
      Why do you do that?
      Another question; please answer.
To quote O'Reilly, "This is a no-spin zone."
      I am not spinning anything.
