Overheard on CNN.com: Bin Laden's less-than-flattering assessment of Biden

Editor's note: This post is part of the Overheard on CNN.com series, a regular feature that examines interesting comments and thought-provoking conversations posted by the community.

After the release of several Osama bin Laden documents, CNN took a look at the documents and asked readers to share their thoughts. CNN posted analysis on the Security Clearance blog, and we featured some of the comments:

Readers' fiery reaction to bin Laden letters

One of the more interesting conversations that emerged (among many, many topics) was about a remark that bin Laden made about Vice President Joe Biden.

Bin Laden said he wanted to kill President Barack Obama and Gen. David Petraeus. But Vice President Joseph Biden should not be attacked, he instructed. "Biden is totally unprepared for that post." If Obama were killed and Biden took control of the White House, bin Laden wrote, it would "lead the U.S. into a crisis." If Petraeus were killed, he reasoned, it would alter the course of the war.

Bin Laden's letters reveal a terrorist losing control

Readers talked about Biden. Many said they sort of agreed with bin Laden's assessment, albeit reluctantly.

toadears: "Wow. Scary to think that even this nut job knew Biden wasn't a good choice."

Others didn't see things that way.

Bill Pranty: "Actually, Biden's foreign policy experience would have served him well. Especially compared to the Texas Cowboy (George W. Bush), who ceded the presidency to Dick Cheney."

Just a bit of humor for some.

Mark Stouten: "I'm not going to agree or disagree with his view of Biden. But still, I think his opinion of him was hilarious."

A few jabs at Biden were delivered.

texdoc78154: "The second to the last paragraph of the story cracks me up. Biden said don't go. It turns out that OBL had in his (directions) not to kill Biden because he was so ineffectual at his job, and he would make a terrible president! OBL was right!"

But some like Biden.

NewMexico763: "Biden is a good vice president. You and all the other bashers just have to complain about something. Obviously, your lot in life is so bad that you have to blame someone. Why not blame (the president) and Biden. Great job in taking sides with OBL and his views."

One reader said they didn't think the United States could ever be led into a crisis the way bin Laden thinks.

Kamikaze74: "This is why this guy and many others do not understand U.S. citizens. We don't care. If the president was killed by al Qaeda today I would go to work tomorrow and have to be reminded again that our president was killed. Americans are just not affected emotionally when we lose leaders the way these Middle East leaders think. Now blow up a day care center and you're got serious problems."

Another said Biden has not impressed anyone.

hi12345: "Strange thing is liberals, conservatives and Osama all agree that Biden is not ready for a leadership role."

But this person said they thought bin Laden was underestimating Americans' ability to pull themselves together.

ThisGADude: "I love how Osama bin Laden and his (ilk) believe the rest of the world is as black and white as theirs is. If Obama would have been assassinated, the U.S. population would have rallied and united behind Biden and our military in a way that hasn't been seen since the 1940s. We disagree on policy; there is no lack of nationhood. Stupid terrorist."

This just shows the disconnect from understanding the strength of democracy that Bin Laden had.

It reminds me of a very similar situation in history when FDR died in office and Hitler and many of the Nazi political leaders thought the US would be weak because of the transition. The US didn't miss a step in it's efforts in both Europe and Asia.

The office of the Presidency is bigger than any one man.

It's crazy that Bin Laden had the idea to get rid of the man like our president and Gen. David Petraeus. He knew that's the only way the U.S. needs our president because of his outstanding leadership of keeping everything under control but Bin Laden assume Joe Biden wouldn't be able to handle the pressure taking a huge role if the president gets assassinated.

Between Bin Laden’s less-than-flattering assessment of Biden here now on CNN, and at the same time listening to Dr. Oz's over zealous insight over one poor womans plea for an answer to why when she squats to avoid infection in a public place, her urethra goes into fan spray and whizzes everywhere.
I come home from work and bring home dinner and try to enjoy it with my wife, and then this comes along and makes my head feel like it's in a vice, and someone is slowly cranking the jaws tighter and tighter on my head.
For a moment I realize, life wasn't like this 30 years ago. Then I get the idea to line up my laptop, cell phone, my 7 inch dvd-tv on a table, then point a gun muzzle at 'em, then put a deer slug through them, then enjoy the silence.

Why is the news media resurrecting comments made by bin Laden now? These opinions may serve as historical research material for authors or grad students writing their doctor's thesis, but as far as news goes they seem as just column filler. bin Laden is gone..The organization he founded is no longer relevant. Oh, there are terrorists out there as there were before bin Laden was born. They fight for different causes and motives, but have nothing to do with the "philosophical" bin Laden.

Why should our awkward Veep care what the Bluebird of Happiness used to think about him?
As POTUS, Biden would be smart enough to ask some advisers which button to push.
