Report: Dolphins died of drug overdose after rave

Two dolphins at a Swiss theme park died after ingesting a heroin substitute around the same time as a weekend rave at the park last November, according to reports from Switzerland.

A toxicology report from a forensics institute in St. Gallen, Switzerland, showed tests found traces of the heroin substitute buprenorphine in the dolphins' urine, according to a report in London's Daily Mail online, citing Swiss media reports.

The dolphins died within five days of each other in November, after the area near their pool in the Connyland marine park had been rented out for a weekend rave, according to the reports.

Cornelis van Elk, a Dutch marine biologist, said the drugs turn off a part of the dolphins' brains which tells them when to surface for air.

Connyland keeper Nadja Gasser told local media how one of the dolphins, named Chelmers, died, according to the Daily Mail.

"He was drifting under the water and was clearly in trouble and so we jumped into the water.

"We tried to hold him. He was shaking all over and was foaming at the mouth.

"Eventually we got him out of the water. His tongue was hanging out. He could hardly breathe.

"He was given adrenalin, but it didn't help.

"After an hour the dolphin died."

In a report in the Daily Mail shortly after the rave, wildlife experts said noise from the event could have stressed the animals' immune systems and led to the death of the first dolphin, Shadow.

Senseless. Yeah man, let's see what happens if we give these dolphins heroine (ish). I wish these idiots would just stay home and ingest themselves to death.

Who in their right mind would authorize a rave in an animal park? Drugs are the reason for the party, most attendees are going to be higher than kites, and holding the party in proximity to the dolphins is just an invitation to have some morons to try getting the dolphins high. Sort of like exhaling in your dog's face, only with vastly different drugs.

I hope the idiots who doped the dolphins are caught, but I don't hold out a lot of hope that it will happen. In the meantime fire those involved in granting access, and make sure this stupidity isn't repeated.

He/she brought the drugs to the "rave"... the cops scared him/her... they tossed the drugs into the Dolphin pool to save themselves... nothing but "lawyer-like" behavior... Our courts operate the same way...

Why was there a "rave" at a theme park? I thought raves were all about drugs. Who runs this place? It should be closed down!

This is very sad. Humans are just the worst. They really are. I am seeing less and less use for them. Animals got it right.

Why in the hell! are you giving any animal any drug except what is prescribed for the animal or sea creatures by the veterinarian for those in captivity.

I bet the party-goers thought it would be funny to see dolphins high. Whatever, they are responsible for the deaths of these animals, and someone should be locked up for it. It's not very funny at all, especially the gruesome deaths they encountered.
