Rare gorilla species spotted on forest camera

A rare species of gorillas was captured on one of four video cameras set up in Cameroon’s Kagwene Gorilla Sanctuary, according to the Wildlife Conservation Society.

Cross River gorillas are said to be the world’s rarest gorillas, with only about 250 still alive.

“This video gives us all a spectacular view into the hidden world of one of our closest relatives, which is in dire need of our help to survive,” Steve Sanderson, president of the Wildlife Conservation Society,  said in an online statement.

Cross River gorillas are also the world’s most shy gorillas, at least around researchers. They don’t seem bothered by cameras though.

Footage from one camera shows several Cross River gorillas walking in the forest.

One male silverback appears to be showing off, researchers say. He beats his chest and appears to run toward the camera. Another gorilla takes a break and leans against a tree. One gorilla seems to be missing a hand.

“Cross River gorillas occur in very low densities across their entire range, so the appearance of a possible snare injury is a reminder that continued law enforcement efforts are needed to prevent further injuries to gorillas in the sanctuary,” said Dr. Liz Macfie, gorilla coordinator for WCS’s Species Program.

The Kagwene Gorilla Sanctuary was established by the government of Cameroon in 2008 to protect the endangered gorillas. It evolved out of the “Gorilla Guardian” community network, created by the WCS to give gorillas a better chance to survive in unprotected forest sites in Cameroon.

Kagwene is the only site where daily monitoring of Cross River gorilla movements takes place, WCS says.

Too hilarious that this discussion devolves into the simplistic arguements about evolution vs. religion. So try this on for size (even if just for fun): You were all genetically engineered by aliens. The Bible says so: Genesis chapter 6: The sons of heaven looked down upon the earth...and comingled." Gotta watch that comingling.....

    @ Millie Neon,
They were eyewitnesses to Jesus' resurrection or His existence and held to their story even under great persecution. If the events in the Bible were false, no writer in his right mind would endure such torture for a lie. Matthew was slain with a sword in Ethiopia. Mark died by being dragged through the streets of Alexandria. Luke was hanged on an olive tree. John was banished to prison in Patmos. Peter was crucified upside down. Jude was shot to death with arrows. Paul was beheaded at Rome by Emperor Nero.

@Mary Just because someone made a claim in an ancient manuscript isn't proof it happened. If you go through the mythologies of other peoples, you will see that there are a lot of so-called eye-witness accounts of fantastic happenings. And by the way, google how many gods were born on what we call Christmas. Google the history of agricultural deities, and how many of them died and resurrected. Death and resurrection is a common trait of gods in agricultural societies, it mimics the death of the growing season in winter and the rebirth of plants in the spring. There are also many virgin birth stories around long before Jesus. When thinking about religion, it's helpful to have a thorough knowledge of the history of all religions.

The question begged here is, if one part is inaccurate, why would other parts be accurate? IE., the accounts of these tortures are in the bible; are they misrepresented or fabricated also, perhaps? (To fit the prophecy of course)

Nathan isn't the knucklehead. Science has indeed proved evolution. They've proved it in physical anthropology with a rather huge collection of bones and fossils carefully gathered in the last 100 years, and they are finding more all the time. Yes, there are some gaps here and there, and a new find helps fill in those gaps, but the over all collections proves evolution. Genetic science also proves how DNA operates and instructs evolution. And by the way, evolution is not about humans evolving from apes. It's that apes and humans had a common ancestor millions and millions of years ago.

Mitochondrial DNA. If you've never heard of it, you probably are smug and self satisfied and never took a biology class and probably believe in God and not science.

Why can't you people just enjoy the video without getting into an argument about evolution? What is wrong with you morons?

      I agree!
Why can't we just enjoy the rare footage of an increasingly rare creature with out it devolving into a debate that is unwinnable?

"GORILLA'S OF THE MIST" ... A very good yet sad movie. We should be glad to have them sharing the earth with us. They are so much like humans. They even cry like humans with tears rolling down their face. Poor animals. Love them!!!

What beautiful beasts that should be left alone. Ok we know they are there and that they are surviving so let's just leave the cameras watch for more footage and leave them alone.
