Sanford police chief: Neighborhood watch programs need 'good, hard look'

The man tasked with leading the police department in Sanford, Florida, in the wake of the Trayvon Martin killing said communities should "take a good, hard look at who is selected," for neighborhood watch programs.

But, said Sanford's interim Police Chief Richard Myers, he still supports the programs.

"Neighborhood watch is at work in literally thousands of neighborhoods across the country and with no problems whatsoever," Myers told CNN's Erin Burnett on Tuesday. "I think the problems emerge from who the person is and perhaps there's a cause for communities to take a good, hard look at who is selected or who volunteers.

"Let's not kill the concept because of one bad, really bad outcome."

Hey everybody please don't forget about Trayvon Martin because he was a young 17 old male an was unarmed and he was killed while he was minding very own business snd he had a right to travel in that area without one single thing happening to him and Trayvon Martin should still be living today and I am not related to him at all. we don't need vigilante style on other people. that is criminal and it is very wrong.

No one is forgetting about him or Zimmerman. What if the shooting happened the way that he says. Martin attacked him because he was following him? Do you still think that he should go to prison. I don't and I am not kin folks of either. This is America people are innocent until proven guilty. Lets stop the jumping to conclusions.

Trayvon Martin was an unarmed 17 year old American Black kid only just minding his very own business and he was stalked by someone of a different race and why did he go chasing the boy in the first place and if he had not chased the boy Trayvon Martin would still be here and what happened to an innocent American Black child only 14 years old and he was dragged out of his bed for nothing that he did in 1955 shot and killed by whites and his name is Emmitt Till and for Black Americans history do repeat itself. we are not dumb people.

Trayvon Martin lies a-molding in the grave.

Hey, Sanford police chief, YOU need a good hard look. When law enforcement fails, people take justice into their own hands. The folks in this neighborhood invested their life-savings into a nice residence where the could fulfuill their pursuit of happiness. Did you really think you could hang out at the donut shop forever, letting local hooligans prey upon the honest citizens?

YOU created this situation, cops. When you failed to respond to trespassing, failed to respond to burglary, FAILED, did you really think they preyed-upon folks would cower behind their doors, hoping they wouldn't be the next victim? I'm amazed you didn't realize they'd form a neighborhood watch. In fact, cop, take the week off and me and a few friends will solve all the problems. When law enforcement fails, folks will do it themselves.

@char first off The reversed raceist press wont lett this story die off, they even went so far as to call george a white mexican on cnn!If it was a black killing a white teen wouldnt even make the news! For example char did you hear about the gang of black thugs that killed a white man and his date in virginia, they was just driveing down the street and got mugged. Now you said he had a rite to be there. No he did not its a gated community.Everbody makes trayvon out to be a little inocent boy,no one brings up his past criminal record.George was told to stop following trayvon which he did and trayvon mustve jumped him.And to tel you the truth char if I was in georges shoes I wouldve done the same thing ie a man was beating my head in the sidewalk.Once again trayvon was on privet property!

@veteran,mickey,I just hope for your sake and mine, that you're being sarcastic. If not please quit interjecting false information on this case. You're not giving the dead victim Trayvon Martin any respect, and he's not here to plead his case is he?So before you guys supposidly start fires ya can't put out,so to speak, read your facts well, this isn't political, its a human life, black or white and he was unnecessarally murdered for no reason,Zimmerman was warned,so guilt is his already, just prove it isn't because I'm in Florida where it all started, where are you hearing this crap from, what state, just zip it. ya don't know squat, that's all!

Pete, martin wasn't a victim, he was a known criminal, and in a gated community, without permission, THAT IS TRESPASSING. Believing he was a victim is racism. And the black racists are ba-llsie enough to claim zimmerman is white, just to inflame the liberals.

People forget travon was A) a known criminal, B) was trespassing, c) by all evidence attacked zimmerman. martin was a criminal, stop with the reverse racism. No one talks about the thousands of black in the form of gang killings. Use the DHS to go after gangs and the tattoo artists making gang tattoos. Gangs are terrorists

What mickey1313 and veteran said about the Trayvon Affair is 100% correct.
I agree with them completely about racism.

This had absolutely nothing to do with racism. Zimmerman did not mention his supposed color of skin until the police asked him. Racism works both ways i.e. the way that people are over reacting and mentally hanging Zimmerman without a trial. The man was wearing a hood and it was dark and raining. How could anyone see the color of skin?

Main stream media doesn't seem to care a hoot for honesty anymore.

Zimmerman's neighborhood watch duty is looking around each night while he walks he dog. This case has NOTHING to do with NW, Zimmerman was on his way to Target.

Stand your ground is in all the rallies, and all the news stories, but it doesn't apply to this case. There was no standing of ground, Zimmerman claimed self defense, so probable cause was required before arrest.

Most disturbing is the "take a good, hard look at who is selected," What exactly does it mean? Everything deserves a good hard look, but just what sort of criteria does he suggest for denying someone participation in NW? If he is saying Zimmerman should not have been allowed to be in NW, he should state his case, and not from hindsight.

Aging Mildred was a 93 year old woman who was particularly despondent over the recent death of her husband Earl. She decided that she would just kill herself and join him in death.

Thinking that it would be best to get it over with quickly, she took out Earl's old Army pistol and made the decision to shoot herself in the heart since it was so badly broken in the first place.

Not wanting to miss the vital organ and become a vegetable and a burden to someone, she called her doctor's office to inquire as to just exactly where the heart would be. "On a woman," the doctor said, "the heart would be just below the left breast."

Later that night, Mildred was admitted to the hospital with a gunshot wound to her knee.

When you consider Martin's past, and we must, what if he was the person that had been burglurizing the homes? If so they should have finger prints on file. So wait until the trial and lets see where this goes. I think he will be found not guilty. If Zimmerman had no injury and Martin was shot in the back and not front and close up. Then.....different story. I rest my case.

I don't think many people would have a problem with that, as long as Zimmerman's criminal past is looked at, also.

Banasy, Zimmerman's past has been looked at. He had a peace bond placed on a woman who had assaulted him. He was a mentor to an African American family of children. Helped them with studies and gave them money when needed. Think that there was a speeding ticket along the way. The only way we knew Martin was a problem "child" was when the Miami news reported that he was expelled from school three times and that he was found to have weed in his school bag along with a woman's jewlery and tools?

I am not going to speculate on this case; I shall wait for the trial.

I will, however, say that while NW's are a fine thing, vigilantism isn't.
There is a fine line between being a NW person, and being a lookout.
Most place have sort of structured NW.
    This is good.

@Pete I know all of this also. I think Zimmerman was following Trayvon, Trayvon to his girlfriend knew this. If anyone was using the defense law it was Trayvon. How is it that zimmerman was so close to Trayvon that Trayvon could attack him. Also the NHW program sign says to call law enforcement. When you take the course for NHW program it tells you never approach anyone you think is committing a crime, let police handle it.

@Mickey1313- You are assuming Trayvon attacked him. My question on that matter is what was Trayvon wearing and we do not know. The witness calling in said the person on top had a white T-shirt on. When Zimmerman came into the police department he had on a white T-shirt. He had a blue and red jacket on over it. Was the jacket on before or did he put it on after? That is why I will wait because all of these unanswered questions need to be addressed. The juries out on all this with me, I want to see the evidence.

@Mama,thank you for seeing this with an open mind, these jerks got Trayvon at 17 looking like JACK THE RIPPER, or something! He was visiting from Miami Lakes,Florida, right near me.He volunteered at the local football games at the snack bar, does that sound criminal to you? These uninformed wanne be lawyers have it all figured out,but they're missing one piece, the dead Trayvon..He can't talk on his behalf,he can't tell you how he screamed for help ,but its easy to point fingers at him, because he's dead. What a waste, just a mentally small man with a big gun,an equalizer of sorts because of his past, being beat up as a 17 year old himself wanting to get even with society, really pathedic.....

And looks like Zimmerman's side of the story is that someone attacked him, broke his nose and slammed his head into the sidewalk. Just an over reaction from Martin that someone would dare follow him or..... Obviously since he was shot at close range and in the chest, he was not running away. So who could have attacked Zimmerman? Huh?

@Veteran- I have been on here a long time also. But if someone has a gun, can you grab him and struggle with him and hurt him before he shoots you? He could have hit his head on the concrete before the police got there. That is the point we only have Zimmermans word, I want the physical evidence. What was Trayvon wearing, a gray hoodie. What was Zimmerman wearing a white T-shirt, that was the person on top and the man on the bottom must have been Trayvon and he was yelling for help. (A witness statemant on tape.)
