Overheard on CNN.com: 'I stand with Joe Arpaio,' reader says about lawsuit

Editor's note: This post is part of the Overheard on CNN.com series, a regular feature that examines interesting comments and thought-provoking conversations posted by the community.

The Justice Department filed a civil lawsuit against Sheriff Joe Arpaio and Maricopa County, Arizona, on Thursday.

"They're using me for the Latino vote, showing that they're doing something, taking on the sheriff over an alleged racial profiling," Arpaio told reporters in Phoenix. Our readers had varying takes on the controversial sheriff, illegal immigration and Arizona in general.

Arpaio: 'I will fight this to the bitter end'

Readers debated whether the federal government should be getting involved.

Tr1Xen: "I stand with Joe Arpaio on this one. Illegal immigration should be fought vigorously, and I applaud the State of Arizona and the Maricopa County Sheriff's Department for taking that fight much more seriously than the Obama administration has. Heck, the Obama administration found fault in Texas' recent legislation requiring registered voters to provide photo ID, claiming that it discriminated against Latinos because they disproportionately lack photo identification (even though they are every bit as eligible to obtain photo identification, provided they are here legally). By the way, as a Texan, if that legislation is overturned by the federal government or isn't in effect on Election Day, I plan to wear a name tag with someone else's name on it when I go to vote. I'll tell them my correct name and to just ignore the name tag on my clothing. I urge others to do likewise! :)"

NoTarOnBeach: "Then you stand with a criminal. If you are OK with the police working outside the laws, then don't complain when the police abuse carries over to you."

19volks71: "Thank you. The federal government has no business in county level operations."

These people spoke out against Arpaio.

Ed Campbell: "Is there anyone in Arizona government who actually cares about civil rights?"

katepig: "Doesn't look like it does it. I'm from Arizona, but I've escaped. Joe Arpaio is one of the most corrupt sheriffs in the U.S. This guy is such a profound scumbag, I'm glad they're finally taking some action in regard to his vile behavior. If he and Jan Brewer were permanently removed from service, there would just be 100 more racist rednecks to take there place. Political buffoonery is par for the course in AZ."

These commenters wrote in support of Arpaio.

Tjscott: "So let's get this straight. Arizona has one of the highest immigration problems in the United States with the VAST majority of these illegals being Hispanic. Key words being illegal and Hispanic. Now, we're going to sue the person we put in charge of enforcing laws in a particular county of Arizona. The circus act that is the U.S. Justice Department is going to sue the guy who is supposed to get rid of people breaking laws (hence, 'illegals' in the earlier portion of this note), sending a clear message that you shouldn't actually arrest the grossly overpopulated illegal Hispanics. Wow. That makes no sense at all. I hope the terrorists succeed in taking out D.C. next time."

tgloege: "Leave Joe alone for crying out loud! If we had a sheriff like Joe in every county in the U.S., we'd have far fewer illegal aliens sucking up taxpayer money."

Aaaaand ... cue the state-on-state rivalries.

ProfLogie: "I've traveled through Maricopa County ... didn't stop or buy anything though ... Tried not to spend any money in the backwards state of Arizona."

Cat Nippy: "I once considered retiring in Arizona. No more. To paraphrase an old quotation, if I owned hell and Arizona, I would live in hell and rent out Arizona."

novax: "Yea, probably from the progressive state of California!"

The only people who really benefit from illegal immigration are illegals and those in the US who exploit their labor.
We will never know whether charges against Sheriff Arpaio have merit, because this situation is about the Feds bullying local law enforcement. The Feds have deliberately NOT enforced immigration law for decades, and now they are making sure nobody else does either.

Sheriff Joe is an American Hero with a capital "H". The WE Are The World people have taken this Country into the slums of the world. It really has NOTHING to do with whether DECENT Hispanics come here to have a better life (and PLEASE tell me WHY they get to bypass the essential SYSTEM for Legal immigrants?) It is about the DECENT Americans who are having their lives torn apart by foreign invaders who have no right to the resources, including jobs, which CITIZENS and LEGAL immigrants have paid to support with taxes. The resources which these people use UP are social resources such as police, social services, health care, education and any program which uses tax dollars. The social practices which affect EVERY American are in the forms of overcrowded housing, abusive machismo behavior which our culture had made good inroads to correct, refusal to learn English and assimilate, expecting every state in the Union to accomodate THEM with expensive bilingual resources (that goes for ALL immigrants), having more children than they can support who drop out of school at the highest rate in America and use up needed resources for our own youth who need extra support, enabling the greed of corporations who don't have to raise the wages for unpleasant jobs or devise a better way to do them, sending money out of the US to support the failed criminal culture of their origin etc. Of course, the most salient point is simply that Sheriff Joe is UPHOLDING the LAWS of this Nation which were legislated to PROTECT The United States of America NOT the the sovereign nations of Central America. .

Obama and his cronnie Holder refuse to protect our borders from illegals (its election year and Obama needs the hispanic vote so he can continue to screw up America). In fact Holder and company arranged for the shippment of weapons to the illegals to assist in their illegal entry (killing Americans along the way). Nothing has happened to Holder as a result of the killing because Holder invoked the Florida Stand Your Ground Law. But that was not enough now they want to go after AZ and Sheriff Arpaio because he is enforcing AZ laws (and Federal Laws which Obama and Holder refuse to enforce) to curb illegals and their Illegal entry into the United States. Where is Jessie and AL, oh I see them now, they are holding hands with Obama and Holder shouting we shall over come.

Joe should be fired and sued. What gives him the right to tell people they can not speak their native language, and punish them for it. Why can't he learn Spanish, or walk around with a translator if he thinks people are plotting. I feel the entire state government of Arizona is twisted mentally.

For those bleeding hearts that don't mind the ILLEGAL immigrants sucking our country dry, let YOUR tax money pay for it. I support LEGAL immigration. Think about it: Illegals cannot live here without breaking several laws. For example, millions are driving our streets illegally without insurance. Speaking for myself, a proud American, I am fearful in my own country. I'm tired of being afraid and that I may have to move from San Diego as it is overrun by illegal immigrants.

The so called civil rights division is filled with radical left lawyers from ACLU and Casa de Maryland. These racists are the probelm with Holdr and Obama...one of the biggest reasons to vote out Obama is to get rid of these radicals.

This is the new tactic of racists...they call you racist. Yes, most people are racist against evil and bigotry, so you are correct. Most bigots can not be reformed, and therefore are disliked. So there is some truth in the claim of right-wing conservative calling a democratic liberal racist...they are racist against your evil ways.

Joe is a real American Hero, he is upholding the law. Illegals by the thousands come across our border, killing our citizens, raping our women, living on welfare, that my tax dollar supports. They are to dumb and lazy to get a job.Joe is doing the right thing, too bad that the DOJ is on the side of illegals. They need to clean their own house beofre they worry about Joes.

The violence on the border of the United States is obscene. Horrendous! Yet people who otherwise consider themselves logical individuals continue to ignore this in the face of absolute fact. Example; Texas; Our Consulate workers who were themselves cut down in traffic – 3 adults dead by street gunfire, with 2 toddlers almost shot in the back seat. What could you be thinking to complain when our Law Enforcement concern themselves with this travesty against Americans. Another example; Phoenix – Illegals cross the border, and enter Phoenix in a van that is painted EXACTLY LIKE FBI. They drive into a neighborhood with FBI uniforms on and start strafing with automatic weapons. They kill many people including an innocent 11 year old bystander. Example; Tijuana, Mx. 3 police BEHEADED NO LESS. The Cardinal of Mexico City cut down in the Airport. A 14 year old boy arrested for cutting the heads off Mexican Mafia victims. What could you people be thinking???? How can you continue to ignore such horrors just to be considered Progressive. What is progressive about ignoring REALITY????????? You should be on your knees thanking Sheriff Joe for protecting you while you drive through Arizona. If you don't want to stay there then don't. But, FOR GOD'S SAKE USE SOME COMMON SENSE AND QUIT IGNORING REALITY.

The streets of America are running with the blood of Americans and you people just go on blaming it on inanimate objects we call guns. Guns do not have feet; they cannot cross the border into America and murder people trying to hide from Juarez drug Cartels. Even Geraldo who is one of the most liberal reporters in America complains about it; but, progressives blame all this murder on gun issues so they can use it during elections. What is the COST IN HUMAN LIVES OF YOUR POLITICAL POSITIONS? Why can't you wake up like normal adults and look at the facts of life on our borders. All these deaths are not going away after the election. SHAME ON YOU FOR IGNORING REALITY IN LIEU OF YOUR POLITICAL POSITIONING. SHAME ON YOU!!!!

Africa for the Africans,Asia for the Asians, white countries for EVERYBODY!

Mass immigration and "assimilation" forced on ALL white countries and ONLY white countries.

Genocide is genocide,it makes no difference if it is accomplished by bullets and mustard gas,or mass immigration and social engineering.

    Anti-racist is a codeword for anti-white.
