Open thread: Same-sex marriage and your life

This week, President Obama announced his personal support for same-sex marriage. The endorsement came a day after North Carolina voters passed a constitutional amendment that bans gay marriage in their state.

So, we want to know - what does Obama's announcement mean to you? Will it make any difference in your life?

I am always thrilled when someone chooses to throw a wider net into the sea of life to pull all of us into a oneness that reaches far beyond our separateness.

poppajohn818, you certainly have the right to vote as you wish, unless you're unregistered and living in poverty in a state with expensive VoterID laws. Know of any like that? Know any poor people? People who need healthcare through no fault of their own?
If you hate your fellow Americans that much, then, yes, voting for Romney or Paul would be your cup of tea, wouldn't it?

    Equality for all.
Let us stop discriminating against ANY group in America.
Two adults love each other. Let them get married. It's nobody's business but theirs.
Marriage is a social contract...and if it is against your religious beliefs, then you don't have to marry them....

Some people want to marry their brothers, sisters, cousins and even their animals. Their all adults should they be able to marry if they claim they love one another? Who's to say they are wrong? You said equal rights! Right?

does that mean we should discriminate against murders and pedophiles either??? they are both huge groups of people right??? should we use the "Golden Rule" and let them do what they want to whatever group they are attracted to?

So Chad you are ok with adult marriage between any two people? I suppose that means those pesky "next of kin" marriage laws that EVERY state has adopted will have to go. We small minded folks will have to learn to embrace brother/sister, mom/son and father daughter marriages because after all "It's none of our business".

If you don't like Catholicism, don't have a Catholic wedding. If you don't like polygamy, marry just one person. If you don't like the woman next door, marry some other woman. etc. etc. etc. On the whole, just worry about your own wedding and your own marriage. No need to be concerned about anyone else's.

I'm a rare gay conservative. Clearly I'm biased against Pres. Obama- I simply don't have a Democrat-bone in my body. But truthfully- his words this week do offer a bit of validation. Ultimately though, unless they can be backed-up by meaningful deeds or result in equality legislation- his words are nothing more than one more person's personal opinion. Obama finally got this issue right. But I agree more w/ VP Dick Cheney on this matter- and others.

But if you follow laviticus then you'll be in prison for murder so you won't be able to get back to me.

I think America has fallen from grace...I think America has lost its morals, values and principles in which it was founded. America is in huge trouble...the children are the one's who suffer the most when their mom and/or dad wake up one morning and decide, "Im Gay or Lesbian"! The majority of gay/lesbian couples are the way they are because of the glam of being different, not because of a true "love" for one another! But I am glad we know where Obama/Biden stand on this issue...they spoke loud and clear...and I will certainly not be voting for them this time just like I didnt vote for them last time.

Only with a secular government can the populace hope for religious freedom. This country was neither founded as, nor intended to be, a christian nation. As for having fallen from grace, I'm too old for imaginary friends. So are you.

They "wake-up" and say they are gay because they were oppressed and hid it until they just couldn't take it anymore. They were always gay to begin with. Trust me!

GLAM OF BEING DIFFERENT????? HOW DARE YOU!!!
I prayed every nite for YEARS for God to make me straight. You know what he did? Nothing. You know what that tells me? That he loves me the way that I am. ONly you and your narrow minded view of the world doesnt. And I am about sick of worry about what you think.
My whole life, I have been told that I am mentally disturbed, that something is wrong with me. Nothing is wrong with me. I love who I love, because it is in me to love. Love is something that you have never recieved, or given. Because love is unconditional. You say you love your kids, but if one of them came to you, and said they were gay, you would disown them, as well as a friend, or ANYONE. So dont talk to me about love. Dont talk to me about morals.

I just don't get how any sane person can claim laws outlawing gay marriage is anything but flat out blatant discrimination. Anytime you deny the someone, or a group of people the same basic rights you yourself have, it is discrimination in the purest sense of the word. Wrap it in religion or whatever you want, it does not change the fact.

Well check out Obama's position in 2008...he opposed gay marriage and was a law professor (supposedly).

Was Obama a bigot and discriminatory in 2008?

Should family members be able to marry each other then or should you be able to have more than one husband or wife? If not then you are discriminating and apparently not sane.
