Open thread: Same-sex marriage and your life

This week, President Obama announced his personal support for same-sex marriage. The endorsement came a day after North Carolina voters passed a constitutional amendment that bans gay marriage in their state.

So, we want to know - what does Obama's announcement mean to you? Will it make any difference in your life?

We need to understand that marriage and holy matrimony are two different things. Marriage is a civil contract that governs thousands of civil laws including, but not limited to, tax, inheritance, property ownership and responsibility for children. Holy matrimony is a religious commitment that follows different rules for every religion. Islam can have holy matrimony between one man and as many as four women, Roman Catholics can disallow divorced people from reentering holy matrimony. Many religions can disallow their adherents from entering holy matrimony outside of their own faith or race. Any religion can allow holy matrimony only be between one man and one woman.
However, in the United States of America, no religion has the right to impose their beliefs on all others. No one has the right to turn this country into a Roman Catholic, Mormon, Methodist or Baptist version of Iran.
Civil rights are the foundation of this country. Over 236 years they have grown to include rights for women, for non-Caucasians, for the foreign born, for people of faiths other that Protestant Christians. We will soon include in this list LGBT people. If we do not, this country will not long survive as a democracy.

More people support it than are against it. I guess the majority of America is immoral.

Morality is a constantly changing ideal, and who or how you love is not for religious leaders to decide.. They are the same ones that said the same thing about women 100 years ago, and minorities 50 years ago. Your family in the future will be ashamed of you for you stubborn attachment to bigotry, and your failure to love your neighbor, neighbor!

No, more people are against it. Please look at every state that has let the people vote (like California and North Carolina). People in America are against it.

Would segregation have been ended by a popular vote in the 50's? Our court system is necessary to protect the rights of sometimes unpopular minorities because the founding fathers were terrified by democratic "mob rule." Hence the courts!

Most of America if for it? Don't think so. It has been voted down in EVERY state that has put it up to the vote.

Clearly, the strength of the love and marital bonds I share with my wife and upon which my kids depend will shrivel and die if two guys (or gals) I've never met tie the knot. Surely we would all be divorced by now if it wasn't for the tireless efforts of Republican lawmakers everywhere to Defend Our Marriages. Thanks Repubs!

Its all about you I guess. You whiny Christians who want everyone to believe like you do. Very bizarre to somehow think that other people's rights will affect you and your family.
      You're a bigot.

Be against it all you want – for yourself and your family if you want. But you have no right to impose your ridiculous bigotry on others.

Exactly, so don't push your beliefs on us......it works both ways. I have very good gay friends, but they don't push their behavior off on me or mine. In God I Trust..........Obama just wants the cash and votes.

Here's the reality and you all know it. This is all about one argument – god don't like it. Well, there is no god. The so-called "christians" that are violently opposed to this are most likely closeted themselves (see recent studies on the issue). The saddest part of all of this is that we are spending so much energy on such a simple issue (should two PEOPLE be afforded the same rights as any other two PEOPLE). What we really lose in this, and already have lost long ago, is our dignity and standing as a rational and compassionate nation. If we didn't have a ton of money and a military the size of the moon, we'd be a third world country. Our low rankings in science, math and education in general plus our high religiosity make us more like Saudi Arabia or Iran.

  10. Hey, why not?

Why the bigoted focus on gays? Why are polygamists being treated unequally? Why can't polygamists have the same rights for all their wives? Shouldn't they be able to gain all the right afforded by marriage, only for multiple wives? Shouldn't polygamists be able to marry however many women they want? Polygamists are being oppressed!

There are a lot of people who think independently in this world AND are kind and generous. Just because they don't fit your ideas or definitions, does not mean they are bad. There are a lot more athiests than theists would like to believe. Just don't try to force your views on anyone and we'd all get along better. Really now, if you want to get married hetero or gay – who cares. It is a contract and that is why we should allow all people the right to marry another person, one at a time, if they wish. Keep your religion to yourself. If you want to exclude and dictate, do it only within your religion, but it should not aply to others.

No, you just typed some word their filter found offensive. Try looking for combinations of words in your post that form "bad words" and then divide those letters somehow.

The posts with religous and biblical references are a little angry is that what they teach you god wants you to be angry at people that choose to live differnt than you? Maybe its guilt are you living up to the standards of your beliefs do you ever covet other peoples things? Thats on the top ten do not do list. how about stealing maybe your taxes aren't exactly right or clerk gave you too much change back and you forgot to say something or download some free music so on. So gay marriage I didn't see on the list adultery is so god bless the gay people for not wanting to commit adultery and be in a commited relationship

Compared to the gay's and lesbian anger? Where do you learn that? Can you show any place in history where marriage is between anything other than man and woman? Are there any established religions where it is normal to be gay or lesbian? Perhaps the gays and lesbians should make up thier own word using latin as a base. It is kind of annoying that they have changed the meaning of the word gay and the meaning of the rainbow, now they want to redifine marriage. Doesn't seem right to me.

we have had equal rights for everyone in Canada now for 8 years including marriage. It hasnt hurt anyone. Some in the US are just bigoted thats all. Its so easy to try to uses the bible to justify things. The bible is just a book people it says many things about many people you can justify just about anything if you pick the right passage..give me a break. Bigotry and hypocrisy reigns in the country of supposed freedom.."life liberty and the pursuit of happiness"..not so much america at least not for everybody..,you should be ashamed. But then again if you believe that we all came from Adam and Eve i guess I can understand this narrow thinking

It's just disgusting listening to these religous nuts. Everyone should be treated equal, don't care what the bible says. I can promise you that there is not a gay on this earth that willingly wanted to be gay. It's who they are and I am. We are good people and just want equality. I don't think I would ever get married, but would like to know I could if i ever wanted to. It's been legal in Europe for over 50 years and they are doing just fine. Actually, in Denmark, they just passed legislation that would allow gays to marry in a church. Trust me, we don't care about walking down the aisle in a church, simply...... just want the tax breaks, next of kin, visitation in ICU for loved ones and health care benefits. Oh and of course, having that union with a loved one. Do these religous nuts really believe in what they are saying? It's so common sense to me. I am so glad my parents didn't poison my mind with that non sense. There should be separation of church and state in this country and when this goes to the high court; we will ALL be equal
