Open thread: Same-sex marriage and your life

This week, President Obama announced his personal support for same-sex marriage. The endorsement came a day after North Carolina voters passed a constitutional amendment that bans gay marriage in their state.

So, we want to know - what does Obama's announcement mean to you? Will it make any difference in your life?

Where are you getting these figures? Show me the proof, b/c I was never abused as a child, nor were any of my gay friends.

if you're trolling, then good one, i guess.

if youre serious, then you're simply incorrect. Don't tell others why they hold personal beliefs, or that they are wrong. the reason you are wrong, is not because you are anti-gay, but because you have demonstrated a complete misunderstanding of the issue at hand.

Just what is everyone afraid of, does the ultra right think that somehow gays getting married is going to impact their marriages. Come on people get a life, let everyone in this country have the same rights. It wasn't that long ago that women didn't have the right to vote and blacks couldn't own property, vote or even walk on the same side of the street as a white person. Grow up! Stop the injustice.

If gay folks want to marry eachother then let em. At least they are not breeding. I read through some past posts and some advocates talked about evolving......if you cant breed, you cant evolve....."O" will say what every he can to get re elected. Empty words.

I believe marriage is between two CONSENTING ADULTS.
Man + Woman, Woman + Woman, Man + Man.
If you can argue with LOGIC why this is wrong then leave a reply.
to save time, By logical I mean leave your holy relics outta the equation, and no one is talking about marrying animals so please no bestiality comments

The Lesbian Community thing didn't last very long for the Amazons. They died off.

Had you paused to search for "Amazons" you would have learned they are a Greek myth, like the centaurs which were also a popular theme in early Greek art and writing.

I wish radical Big Government liberals like Santorum would stop trying to use government to control our lives. Let people take personal responsibility in their pursuit of happiness and use the market to determine who churches choose to wed or not. I'm so tired of Communistis like Santorum corrupting our pursuit of liberty.

So if the majority approve Obama's decision why aren't people voting in their states to legalize gay marriage. This poll doesn't make sense at all. My guess people are saying one thing to the polling and then writing in another when they vote.

Marriage = ?. My point just call it something else besides marriage and I think you will offend less people , try not to redefine the very long standing meaning of the word Marriage and you will get what you want. I am all for equal rights for all, just call it something else and get it recognized for what it is, with all the same rights as a marriage. Or is that to much to ask? or do you think making a new word for man on man union and woman on woman union would be some sort of discrimination and a way of singling them out? I think most people would agree that every one deserves equal rights, but I also agree that most people define marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

Not an unreasonable idea, actually....but you have to remember, here in NC "traditional" marriage was not under assault. There was already a law against and no push to dislodge that law here. The ammednemt was referred to correctly as the "anti-gay" ammendment because that is all it is. It simply wanted to take a minority that has been treated badly and reat them a little worse. It wasn't about protecting marriage at all. It was about slamming gays.

Well, I'm sure all the good Baptsts and Catholics are sleeping better tonight here in NC knowing their marriages are now perfectly safe and protected. No doubt, the appalling divorce rate will disappear to nothing,no more babies born out of wedlock...godliness everywhere. Isn't that how it works?

It affects me when my marriage license reads Spouse A and Spouse B instead of BRIDE and GROOM.

If gay marriage is legal it has no impact on me what so ever.A marriage certificate is just that.It is a contract between 2 adults with-in 4 corners of a piece of paper.Issued by the goverment and states for a leagal committment to 1 another. Then it protects you and the other person from lots of thing that can hard 1 of you or both of you during and after 1 has passed away.it has no bearing on anyone elses marriages at all. Religion has nothing to do with a Marriage Liscense period.Only if you both wish to bring religion into it as a binding attachment to it.It has NOTHING to do with GOD at all.

Without being judgmental in either direction, I would wish people what makes them happiest. Your happiness, in one direction or another, will impact other people's lives positively. If one, for instance, remains focused on one's goal, be it creating a home or attaining higher education, among others, there will hardly be any time left to become involved in somebody else's private affairs, which we shouldn't in the first place.

Allow churches to decide what holy matrimony is, and allow equal opportunity to marry under the constraints of the law.

Sorry but churches don't need to decide anything related to secular law. This is a matter that clearly falls under seperation of church & state. The license recognizing the couple is issued by the state and signed by the individuals. It is filed at the clerks office. This is contract law, not Sharia and we need to start acting accordingly.

A church cannot legally marry anyone without the parties signing the license from the state. If you don't believe that, look at child marriages in the poligomist sect. They call them "Celestial Marriages" because under the law it is not allowed.

It is time to treat this for what it is, Contract Law. It is also big business and places like NC just lost a lot of economic growth with our stupid ammendment.
