Open thread: Same-sex marriage and your life

This week, President Obama announced his personal support for same-sex marriage. The endorsement came a day after North Carolina voters passed a constitutional amendment that bans gay marriage in their state.

So, we want to know - what does Obama's announcement mean to you? Will it make any difference in your life?

Something I've noticed from both sides, as an independent, is that the other side always accuses the other of imposing their views (taking away their rights) upon them but he/she never seems to realize he/she is doing the same thing when they try to promote their viewpoint. The President is responsible for a fiscally sound country and though I voted for him, he is failing to lead the country in this way. We can blame the opposition but it's his responsibility as President dispite the opposition. It's a distraction to focus on social issues when the US is in such a terrible financial state. Good tactic though!

Social issues Jason? Social issues that involve basic rights and protections that you already have. I agree there are other important issues on the agenda, however while you are comfortable and secure with the rights and protections granted to you and your family by our federal government, gay families are in survival mode. Why would Obama use social issues as "a tactic" to distract the American people from the economy? Do you really think he believes it will help him to get re-elected? Do you think you know what he needs to do in order to get re-elected? Do you have experience with this?

Gays came out of closets, went to the bedrooms to commit abominations, walked the streets to demmand their rights, and if they dont repent will end up in the lake of fire.

Well, luckily we don't live in a theocracy. And my friend if you want to take about abomination, look at what most "traditional marriage" is in the Bile, that's an abomination.

Women as property, incest, marrying your rapist just to name a few.

That may be what happens....but in the meantime, they should have the freedom to marry since this country is free from negative, condemning religious laws.

I would at least respect the anti-gays more if they just could say they think it's "weird" or "different" rather than trying to shove a damn book down the pro-gays throats to try to find validation to their opinion.

    no pun intended :)

Marrying gays does not affect marrying hetros. It only gives the government less money.

Wrong Scottish Mama. The economy benefits from more people getting married. More couples moving into areas that legalize gay marriage. Home purchases, families pouring their available income nto their communities which support their children. For the weddings alone, money goes to the hotels, florists, tourism, etc... Anytime people thrive and are actively pursuing happiness, the economy benefits, freeing up government to do what its supposed to do.

The only question here is ... Do you follow the Bible of God or the Bible of man?
Remember the Bible of God IS truth, yes there has been mistakes in translation found but you must search for the truth as if you were searching for gold.
    Mans is just lies.

      @ Mary:
      I don't follow any Bible.
Why should I have to follow any Bible?
Would that be because you can't think for yourself?

I will NEVER FOLLOW the bible because it was written by men and all men lie. So your right and wrong.

Religion is the root of all evil.

Sorry I follow the Torah or Talmud. (Yay, freedom of religion, even if you choose not to have one!)

The irony here is that there are probably an equal number of men and women who are gay AND married, as there are who are simply "gay". Don't we get regularl helpings of men (mostly) who've cheated on their female spouse with another ma!?. I mean really, where is the best place for a gay man or woman to hide? It ain't in the closet. It's in a marriage.

I think people need to stop thinking of the word "marriage" as something associated with religion and realize that we are talking about civil rights that are afforded to every American. Personally, I would opt for a word that wan't as loaded as "marriage" for ALL Americans that wish to enter into civil contracts with each other.. That way, religious types can stop freaking out and can go back to judging every equally again.

    @noway

and adoption of children who have no parents is an issue with you? you would rather more children be orphans because you don't like the idea of same-gender parent to raise them? Your comment is a slap in the face to all people who adopt.

It takes a village to raise a child. they didn't say they had to be all HETR0s

spreading their lifestyle is no different then HETR0s spreading their lifestyle of so many fatherless households. Seems this modern society doesn't have a problem with that new LIFESTYLE.

      like that matters anymore

And straights think that the word Marriage even has any value anymore. The divorce rate proves it's a worthless word like the paper it's written on. Let the simpleminded straights have the stupid thing.

My prayer for this issue is that we will not equate this to be a civil rights issue. The country we live in was founded on Christian, Biblical principles. The Bible was and should continue to be the moral compass for The United States of America. While I unapologetically support Pres. Obama, I do not agree with his stand on this issue. Countries erode not because of money but because of morality issues. Let's pray for our country in a way we never have before. Please don't say allowing gays to get married is the same as all Americans being treated equal and given the rights they should be afforded.

Trevor, the most basic moral rule is "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" Beyond that, morality within the context of someone's religion is pretty much subjective. Countries dont "erode" as you put it, due to immorality. As a matter of fact, countries that enact laws regarding equality for all , tend to thrive, including the countries that have legalized marriage for gay people. Rightly, many laws are justified on the basis of moral absolutes – morals that most every sane every human being can agree upon. Beyond that, morals are just the will of the majority. The Taliban enforced its strict interpretation of Sharia Law – an extreme form of islamic law. I dont think we would want their moral values being the basis of our government and dictated to us – unless you are into female genital mutilation. In countries where religion fanatism is intertwined with legal and cultural practices, your gay family members and friends can be put to death. So yes, let's pray, but let's pray for equality for all human beings and let's not use our religious convictions to directly cause harm to others. Our country was founded more on the basis of LIfe, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness than "Bible, Christian Principles. Infact, do your homework – check it out. Most of our founding fathers were deists, not christians.

The slide of morality is with cheating spouses, the divorce rate, and those not even bothering with marriage. The fact that gays want to marry is a moral plus for this country.

      Oh Trevor

The country has been around for centuries and I can say that the founded country does NOT have much morals that it follows with that system that supposedly was founded on. Time for some real change since that direction doesn't seem to be working.
