Open thread: Same-sex marriage and your life

This week, President Obama announced his personal support for same-sex marriage. The endorsement came a day after North Carolina voters passed a constitutional amendment that bans gay marriage in their state.

So, we want to know - what does Obama's announcement mean to you? Will it make any difference in your life?

We are all Free Americans. This country was created because of religious persecution. We are still attacking others because they don't believe the same. Religion has no right to make or influence laws. The state gives the right to marry, not the church. No person can act as an official to a legal wedding without the state approving them first. Religion has it's place to assist those that need guidance in life, not rule lives.

Why was there two hairy men used as a sample instead of the presentable women who change very little in appearance unless very desperate?

This shouldn't even be a QUESTION! Separation of Church and State means religion shouldn't be playing a factor in the governments decisions. Your religion isn't MY religion so why do you force it down my throat? Live and let Live people. Everyone should be able to marry who they want. All citizens pay taxes, and we all deserve the same rights. I stand behind the LGBT community 100% and will continue to be vocal wherever I can to support them in their equal rights fight!!!

This country was created on the premise of freedom.....representation, taxation...all that stuff mentioned in 5th grade. It's historical, functional, realistic roots are the economic viability of the Virginia colonies.

Kirk Cameron has stated that "marriage is as old as dirt". If you check the Hall of Records, the first marriage certificate in this country was issued in the mid 1800's making marriage approximately 160 yeas old, hardly as "old as dirt".

I now know where, and why, the old expression "Love is blind" originated.

Gay "marriages" became possible only by changing the time-honored definition of marriage as a union between a man and a woman. In MA the people were not allowed to vote on whether or not gay "marriage" should be allowed. Maybe that was because our legislators knew what the people would say.

Time honoured means nothing. You think people weren't gay before the 21st century? Humans have a past of being completely brutal and discriminatory (think Middle Ages "drawing and quartering people, to 100 years ago hanging people, to discrimination against women and Africans still in the 21st century).

At one point, hanging thieves was the time-honoured tradition. At one point, the domestic wife you had no business except being a house mom, was the time-honoured tradition. Screw traditions. The last hundred years have been the most progressive years for humanity. We are actually starting to become "humane". That's a good thing.

Polygamy is condoned in bible. Treating women as property is condoned in the bible. You are for those, right?

Here's an idea: get the government out of the marriage business altogether. We can have a legal civil union available for anyone who wants it; let's say you can have this arrangement with a person of similar, opposite, or indeterminate gender, your toaster, your cat, whatever. Let's just say it's none of our business, because it isn't.

At the same time, the various churches can continue to marry people at their discretion, but with no legal authority. The government won't tell them what they need to recognize, and the church won't tell the government what they have to recognize. We render unto Caesar what is Caesar's and unto God what is God's. What would be wrong with that?

"If your brain was made up of little tiny boxes, find the one that's gay and CRUSH IT!" LOL, funny in context. But truthfully, it is terrible. You religious people need to STFU and mind your own business. People don't choose to be gay. If your God created everyone in his image, then blame this God of yours.

Do you really think a person is like, "hmmm, I want to be different! I feel like choosing a lifestyle for which I will be discriminated against. This will probably help my career goals, and my family will definitely be happy about it." *SARCASM*

Hey if the president is good with gay marriage maybe he should also support individuals who want to marry more that one husband or wife. Maybe we should stop trying to regulate all social behaviors and choices and not just tho ones that are popular or political.

What are the three rings of marriage? Oh yeah,

The engagement ring, the wedding ring and the suffer-ring.
