Open thread: Same-sex marriage and your life

This week, President Obama announced his personal support for same-sex marriage. The endorsement came a day after North Carolina voters passed a constitutional amendment that bans gay marriage in their state.

So, we want to know - what does Obama's announcement mean to you? Will it make any difference in your life?

Stop finding issues that divide people and start talking about the things we can all agree on to get this country back on the right path!!!!

I am a Christian who follows the teachings of Jesus Christ. What did He say on this issue? Nothing- not one single word. What He did say – repeatedly- was to love one another and not to judge. This is the ONLYacceptable Christian response to this controversy. We are called to love and accept each other as God created us. There is no controversy for the TRUE Christian.

Example #1 of a *false* christian

IT'S A NON-ISSUE: There will always be the exact same proportion of gay people in society (0.5 to1.5%). Let them be who they are born as and let them have marriage as they desire. It won't hurt you or the children they adopt, who would otherwise not be nurtured in a loving environment. How do you know it's not God's plan to help ease the population explosion? Get off your high horse and quit telling us what's in the mind of God.

Bravo – and to Mary – Leviticus never uses that word – it did not exist until the 19th century. Who is the false Christian? perhaps someone that takes the word of other rather than looking to know what the original scripture actually say.

Hail Mary, You tend to pick and choose what pleased you in the bible . How about god ask Abraham to take a second wife so he can have a son. How about slavery? Read your bible thoroughly and see if a real Devil exist disguising as God? Hope you have enough intelligent to question yourself.

If you are a preachers wife I think both you and he need to sit down and spend some time reading the bible quite thoroughly.

Who really cares about this ( aside from those that want to marry) it is not something that should be headline news while unemployment is high and the economy is still in the dumps- married or single gay or straight jobs and economy are priority because if they aren't there you can't afford to be married in any instance- Obama wil grab at anything to distract from the problems under his watch ( regardless of when started they are his now) get religion and other things that have nothing to do with fixing the economy and getting jobs back out of the campaign- opps then Obama has nothing to say that would fool voters

This is a civil rights issue and voting "IN" discrimination shouldn't be allowed.

If one lives by the ME factor instead of the God factor... Yes it would be a "civil rights issue"

You phony Old Testament thumpers are amazingly hypocritical. If you followed the rules literally, you'd be at the edge of town burning bull guts right now because you touched your wife during her period. This is the Space Age, not the Stone Age. At least Christ made it simple: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Nuf said.

@ Mary: It is doubtful you understand Christ's often misunderstood passage in Luke 14:26. This was His Merciful attempt to discourage the masses from abandoning their loved ones to follow Him into a dangerous life. Only a hard-core ascetic could become a Disciple. Remember, YOU are not a Disciple...but merely a follower, a fan. There were only 12 Disciples on all the world. BTW, Disciples didn't "hate" their families...but they did forgo them.

I believe years from now, this country will look back on this debate as we look back on such issues as giving blacks or women the right to vote. As hard as it is to believe, there was opposition to both of those issues. We look back now and are appalled that anyone would question either of those rights. I believe equal rights will always prevail in this country.

The only real benefit to marriage is that it allows you to legally share the responsibilities of a family- Once the state took over the responsibility of regulating marriage, religion shouldn't have a say in the matter. If you personally practice a faith that doesn't allow gay marriage, then don't have a gay marriage. Leave the rest of the world to do what it wants. Since the state controls marriage and is secular, then I don't see why any two couples shouldn't be allowed to form a legal family- man and woman, woman and woman or man and man- if they want the legal responsibility of family, then I say let them!!!

Why are you quoting Christ out of context in the middle of a parable? Those are not His words about "swords and no peace" but those of a character in His parable. Those are words on how NOT to be, fool.

I really wish people would stop quoting scripture in response to this. We, as a country, do NOT pass laws based on what the bible teaches. The LEGAL definition of marriage should (and is) different from the religious definition of marriage already. The question has more to do with what the purpose of marriage is in our society, and why government recognizes it in the first place. And there is still a healthy debate to be had there.

It seems that a way to disarm the situation is for the government to get out of the marriage business all-together. Government should only worry about the legal equality via a civil unions for monogamous, committed couples. Let private organizations define marriage how they want (without messing with the age of consent).

Governmentonly needs 1 word for marriage. Marriage should be that word. But if the powers that be choose to use civil-union then thats fine. All weddings will result in civil-unions as far as the govenment will be concerned. Even those getting married in churches will need their civil-union license.

We know all the supposed polls in favor of gay marriage are fabricated numbers by journalists, because every state that has voted on the matter=30 states, has said no.Marriage is a covenant with God and is a man and a woman.Heaven doesn't recognize gay marriage.God will not bless sin.
