Open thread: Same-sex marriage and your life

This week, President Obama announced his personal support for same-sex marriage. The endorsement came a day after North Carolina voters passed a constitutional amendment that bans gay marriage in their state.

So, we want to know - what does Obama's announcement mean to you? Will it make any difference in your life?

it is because there is a constant battle between good and evil here on earth that it is no longer considered a disorder and more and more people are becoming accustomed to it and even acepting it. you cannot deny the moral decline of the US since the removal of prayer from schools and this separation from the church. check crime staistics since the 1960's and look at coming of HIV and other incurable disease. that is no coincidence. if you think it is you my friend are ignorant!

Just more people to do bad things. Population! Like kids being arrested for minor discipline infractions at school. Like youngsters being locked up for minor drug use. Perhaps unintentional pregnancies, absentee fathers, high unemployment etc..which didn't happen in the 60's..Perhaps 24 hour news channels that allows a robbery in a small town in say Georgia to be headlined in maybe Michigan. Or the 5% of population stepping out as gay..Nothing changed ...there are just more people and you are hearing about it because of the internet and instant news.

Nobody has removed prayer from school.
You have every right to say a prayer in school.
You just cant force anybody else to say a prayer.
One by one your silly arguments are dropping like flies.

People like you are the problem with this country.
Drop the bible and get an education, you need one badly.

Please you do not have to belong to a religion to believe in God. God is everywhere not just in a church or a temple or whatever building you may go to. We have only one thing to do in life that is to love and have compassion for EVERYONE without ever expecting something in return. Sounds simple doesnt it. It isnt it is probably the hardest thing we will ever be held to in life. As Deepak Chopra says all religions are cults very large followings. God must be in agony everyday seeing one religion fight against another and kill each other because one thinks he is better than the other

Those who seek to place their religion on American are the ones who are wrong. You also forget the plague and other world wide epidemics that have come along many times in history. You are just one of those biggoted Americans who puts their opinion out there without check ANY facts. SHAME ON YOU!!!!

Looking at the crime rate since 1960 we see that it peaked in 1980 in pretty much all categories, It remained high through much of the 80s and only really started a notale decline in 1992 (When Clinton took office). The 2010 murder rate is actually below 1960. So what happened in the run up to 1980? What happened in 1992? Your premise is that crime is linked to a constant lessening of America's moral fiber. If that's the case the America's morality has been improving steadily – but that is contrary to what you are arguing isn't it? You may be interested in the Freakonomics view of the crime rate as a function of abortion (more abortions means a lower crime rate. It's a compelling argument if you take the time to read it).

Oh as far as STDs go – the overall rate of STDs has remained pretty steady since 1960. Some disease rates have fallen but others have come in. However, the overall rate of infection of diseases that are considered to be STDs has remained at around 80 per 1000 with some variation (+/- 20) since then. So goign from that perspective nothing really has changed since 1960.

First of all, prayer SHOULD have been removed from schools...school is for educating about math, science, and grammar. Church is for educating about religion. Second, HIV isn't a gay disease...have you seen the stats about how many people in Africa are infected? Way more than gays. It is your close-mindedness that has this country/world going downhill, if it truly is. You my friend are in dire need of a real education. God is looking down at people that think that way and is shaking his/her head, saying "that is not what I wanted when I created this world." God is about love, and that is it, plain and simple.

The trouble with moralists is they are inflexible because they never thought their morals through, they were just "given" them at church. Even the Christian church has, over time (although glacially) changed its morals. Please consider that there is no rigid line in morals. Each person's are his own, and taken in aggregate, they become the morals of the land. Some contemporary moral standards serve a useful societal purpose, while others do not. It used to be OK to enslave black people. It was considered a moral judgment that they were inferior and that white people were putting them to useful work. As with many moral judgments, it has no basis in fact and was just a convenient way to justify an economic end and an soothe a deep-seated fear at the same time. It was gradual, and the arguments were harsh, but in the end reason won out over irrationality, as it almost always does. This is quickly happening with the gay marriage issue. Maybe a lot sooner than anyone thinks.

Hope you are taking these parts literally too...

      Ephesians 6:5
Slaves, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ.
      1 Peter 2:18
Slaves, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward.
      1 Corinthians 14:34-36
Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the law. And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.
      Ephesians 5:22-24
Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.
      1 Timothy 2:11-15
Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. For Adam was first formed, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression. Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing.
      1 Peter 3:1
Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands.

Moral decline has been suggested since Socrates. In terms of a decline since the 60's, you'd have to ignore the emergence of civil rights from the equation. With that in the conversation, there's been a significant increase in the country's moral values.

Okay, so if separation from the church is causing the downfall of America, then America has been in its downfall since 1802 when Thomas Jefferson first used the term "separation of church and state". The founding fathers may have been God fearing Christians, but they were far from perfect and smart enough to make sure that everyone had the legal right to worship or not worship however they saw fit. That to me means that religion can't dictate what the law says. I go to church every Sunday, and if I've learned anything it's that no one living on this Earth at this particular moment has the brains or right to tell people what is always right or always wrong. Those that think they do have there heads stuck somewhere unpleasant.

So you think it is the government's role to impose religion on US citizens? How is it not an individual's responsibility to espouse one's moral beliefs on his children (and others)? Why must the government be intertwined? If you will remember, this country was founded on the principle that the church should be separate from the government. Too many people forget that. Gay "marriage" is a religious topic and not one that belongs in the hands of the government.

Or, you know, it could be that the crime statistics have more to do with poverty and the increasing wealth gap in this country. But, you know, prayer in school is a thing.

Interesting that Christians freak out about Sharia Law in Arabic countries, but they seem so intent on enforcing their own, Christian version of the same here at home. I suppose it only is good if it is your religion that is stripping people's rights.

I love Mitt, and I think America's moral decline happened back when we said we couldn't be like the cool dudes in the Bible and have lots of wives. Back then marriage meant something. Solomon rocked with 700 wives which is awesome. America was much more moral when we had slaves. That's back when good was kicking evil's butt.

What a none issue. I could care less. Congress, and the President need to focus on issues to help the people – good paying jobs for young, SS reforms for all, affordable health care for all. A fair tax rate. These are issues that effect us all, not who can marry whom. Congress also has to compromise on issues, Libertarians, Demarcates and Republicans have good ideas, but anymore, individuals in the middle like me, have no one to represent us.

It's not strange at all. Two people love each other, and are denied almost 1,400 federal tax and other benefits (that we pay for in higher taxes by th way), denied hospital visitation rights, etc etc, Gay marriage adds stability to relationships. More imprtantly, if the religious right were serious about protecting the value of marriage they would outlaw divorce. With a divorce rate of 53% it is not the gays that have endangered traditional marriage, it is the very people who feel free to discriminate against us (granted not everyone). My gay marriage would hae no impact on the value fo a straight marriage. My straight friends are very supportive. By the way, all marriage in the U.S. requires a "civil" license and the religious aspect is extra. I think religions should be able to say no. But in a society where separation of church and state is important my civil marriage would be a good thing and no one especially religion should have a say in it..

I don't think the move towards marriage equality will spell disaster for the U.S but the exact opposite. The U.S has been one of the countries in the world that other nations look towards for social progress. It seems after the social progress milestone, the U.S accelerates in all areas forward. In this case, America has been behind the eight ball and lagging behind its peers. I hope this changes soon and that Religious forces are not able to sway public policy. Seperation of church and state is more important than ever for America not the other way around! I don't just mean church I mean any religious seperation from state. If you look to other nations that have legalized gay marriage they aren't burning in fire and brimstone. Again, quite the opposite.

They will use whatever lie that is expedient, and it will work. All of the retired fools that vote for them?
Hey, it'll be someone elses' fault that they lose their social security/medicare. I now, more than in the last 60
years of my life, see how things came to be in totalitarian countries like Germany after 1932.
Simply too many weakminded, greedy, and belligerent folks that relly don't care about anything but
stealing wealth from their country, and they have the ultimate power to do just that.

Most Countries in Europe, for example SWEDEN has had various versions of 'Gay Marriage' for over 4 decades – they still have the highest standard of living in the world. Where is the usa these days, near the bottom half of 210 in the world league table for standard of living.
The REAL Question is: If the usa is the land of the free and home of the brave blah blah blah, why wasn't the usa the FIRST Country in the world to have it – not the last!

I am saddened by the hate and disrespect these Republicans have for great Americans that happen to be gay. I have been with my best friend and partner for 10 years, we are both Afghanistan OEF veterans that have proudly served the country we love. We are family oriented, try to always do what is right for fellow man, and just want to live a happy, fulfilling, and meaningful life. SHAME on these discriminatory politicans who want to hypocritically lead "THE LAND OF THE FREE". I wonder how Mr. Romney would feel if our country banned the religious belief of Mormonism and said it was a disqualifier for running for President? I want each person that reads this to think of something you do in life that you think is right and others may not agree with- now lets put that issue on the ballot in the next election and now say it's against the law and see how you feel. I have the utmost repect for my commander in chief and President. He is a role model for the most important concept of our country- civil rights and doing what is right and standing up for our citizens. Wake up Mr. Romney and Mr. Santorum- your hatred and thought of using this issue for political gain is shameful.

      Pete,

Very well said... and thank you to you and your partner for serving us all at a time when you were not able to do so freely. How difficult that must have been for you both. Best of luck to you both!

matters not what O says, this is a states rights issue and he knows it! his lip service did nothing for the cause he was just able to use the issue to stuff his pockets full of fat Hollywood money! I dislike politicians so much..
