Four tons of marijuana pulled from ocean off California

Authorities found almost four tons of marijuana with a street value of $3.6 million floating in the ocean off Dana Point, California, on Sunday.

Boats from the Border Patrol, the U.S. Coast Guard and the Orange County sheriff's office were involved in recovering the 160 bales of marijuana, according to a report from CNN affiliate KCBS.

A tip led authorities to the marijuana floating in the Pacific Ocean about 13 miles off Dana Point, the station reported.

Border Patrol spokesman Michael Jimenez told the Orange County Register that the fact that the pot was found with no suspected drug boats in the area was unusual.

"At other events, they've dumped the bales to get rid of weight if they're being chased. Generally in these cases we're aware they're being dumped. What's more unusual is that the bales were floating with no boat in sight," the Register quotes Jimenez as saying.

i dont see why the gov just doesnt legalizie it. it would help the economy so much it is not even funny. and the gov would be able to tax it and make money and they would not have to spend so much money on keeping it illegal

What an absolute complete and total waste of taxpayers money. Spending ridiculous sums of money in order to fly in helicoptors and lower federal agents to the ground so they can pull the plants from the ground and then throw it all in a pile and burn it (bet most of them stand downwind) :) Seriously though, by legalizing and regulating pot on the same basis as alcohol, they put a major damper on the drug operations of the cartels while generationg an untold amount of money that the government can use to lower the national debt and/or use to fund treatment programs for hard core drug addicts, but no,they won't do that, it makes far too much sense to go that route rather than to continue on the present hopeless course and God knows, we can't have Uncle Sam doing that now can we?

This is not news but propaganda to support the billions spent to support the war on drugs, which by the way was lost as soon as it was implemented. The leagalization of this weed has not happened yet not because it doesn't make sense but rather I submit because it is one of a moral question and downright ignorance that the use of cannabis is a gateway to more serious drug use. I will also submit this...although not a user myself I would much prefer to get in the car with someone stoned thamn drunk. It has also been my experience through observation that the average pot smoker's demeanor is one of calmness and peace. I'd love to hear an argument other than the old tired and worn out examples that I posed above to why this weed is still illegal.

Amen brother. Just ludicrous. Beam me up to an intelligent planet. Unfortunately we are moving towards legalization but much too slowly. And the half of the country who support conservative thinking are not ready to use common sense in this matter. Just say no is still their cry. The Right to Lifers don't seem ready for the Right To Smokers. At least medical marijuana makes it possible to put a dent into the brutality of the cartels. Smoke 'em if you got 'em.
