Reports: Miami 'zombie' attacker may have been using 'bath salts'

A naked man who chewed off the face of another man in what is being called a zombie-like attack may have been under the influence of "bath salts," a drug referred to as the new LSD, according to reports from CNN affiliates in Miami.

Why 'bath salts' are dangerous

The horrific attack occurred Saturday and was only stopped after a police officer shot the attacker several times, killing him.

'Zombie apocalypse' trending as bad news spreads quickly

Larry Vega witnessed the attack on Miami's MacArthur Causeway. He told CNN affiliate WSVN he saw one naked man chewing off the face of another naked man.

Rudy Eugene

"The guy was like tearing him to pieces with his mouth, so I told him, 'Get off!'" Vega told WSVN. "You know it's like the guy just kept eating the other guy away, like ripping his skin."

"It was just a blob of blood," WSVN quoted Vega as saying. "You couldn't really see, it was just blood all over the place."

Vega said he flagged down a passing police officer.

"When the officer approached him, told him to stop, pointed a gun at him, he turned around and growled like a wild animal and kept eating at the man's face," Fraternal Order of Police President Armando Aguilar told CNN affiliate WPLG.

The attacker was identified by Miami-Dade Police as 31-year-old Rudy Eugene. Miami-Dade referred CNN to Miami Police for all other details of the investigation.

Augilar said he suspects the attacker was under the influence of "bath salts." Four other drug use instances in Miami-Dade bear resemblances to Saturday's attack, he told WPLG.

"It causes them to go completely insane and become very violent" and take off their clothes, Augilar told WPLG.

Dr. Paul Adams, an emergency room physician at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, told CNN affiliate WFOR that the drug makes users delirious. They exhibit elevated temperatures and extreme physical strength, Adams said.

“I took care of a 150 pound individual who you would have thought he was 250 pounds,” WFOR quoted Adams as saying. “It took six security officers to restrain the individual.”

Adams said users have been known to use their jaws as weapons, according to WFOR.

According to a 2011 report from the National Institute of Drug Abuse, bath salts contain amphetamine-like chemicals.

"Doctors and clinicians at U.S. poison centers have indicated that ingesting or snorting 'bath salts' containing synthetic stimulants can cause chest pains, increased blood pressure, increased heart rate, agitation, hallucinations, extreme paranoia, and delusions," according to the NIDA report.

In October, the Drug Enforcement Administration made possession of the stimulants in bath salts, Mephedrone, 3,4 methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV) and Methylone, illegal under an emergency order. The order lasts for a year with a possible six-month extension.

The stimulants have been placed under restrictions or banned in 37 states, according to a DEA press release.

The victim of Saturday's attack, whom police have not identified, was in critical condition at Jackson Memorial on Monday, according to the WPLG report. Augilar told WPLG that 75% to 80% of his face was missing.

Eugene had an arrest record, mostly misdemeanors, including a battery charge from when he was 16 that was later dropped, according to the Miami Herald.

He had been married but divorced in 2007, WPLG reported. His former wife told the station that Eugene had been violent toward her.

Homeless people near where the attack took place said Eugene was often seen around the area looking confused, according to WPLG.

it has been rumored that illicit drugs and hallucinogens use open a portal to demonic activity and possession...to eat 75% to 80% of somebody face-off is enough confirmation...

Uh, so using drugs causes fairy tales to become true? Demonic activity.....sure hope that was sarcasm.

So if it had been 35% to 45% then it would not have been demons? I think the problem is people who believe in demons. Because if you are already this delusional when not on drugs then it won't take much to push you over the edge.

It has also been widely reported that the same drugs promote religious, transcendental experiences. In fact, Johns Hopkins and Harvard are conducting research into those aspects of the drugs right now.

Eugene was often observed looking confused? Well, when you can't quite figure out what's going on, one approach is certainly to "partially devour" (as they phrase the attacks in Night of the Living Dead) a victim. You may not be able to glean much information through the process of the act itself, but in short order, someone will arrive to help you figure out what's up.
This is a really disturbing story though. I hope that a toxicology report/autopsy helps shed some light (of the non-zombie variety) on what may have been behind this behavior.

LOL...dude, the guy was eating another man's face. You can't honestly say that if you walked up to the closest thing anyone has ever seen to an "actual zombie", you would walk up to him and say "Heeey, stop eating that guy's face off". No....if you had a gun, you would shoot him....with or without a badge. Crap man, your comment makes me cringe in the fact that there are actually people that are as completely oblivious to common sense as you on this planet.

Using any illicit drugs to get high illustrates a weak mind representative of a total loser. From coffee to cocaine and beyond, you don't need any of that stuff in you. It's all in your mind.

Did you even read the article? A man was violently attacking someone and after multiple verbal attempts to get him to stop, it was then the officer fired. I would think if someone was chewing your face off, you would want the police to get him off by any means necessary. What the officer did probably saved this man's life.

Are you joking? I am against shooting people but if someone's face is being eaten off, I think you need to defend that person!! I hope they figured out what the hell this guy was on.

Obviously, if he WAS a zombie.. he wouldn't have died simply from being shot -_- and if he WAS possessed, he wouldn't have died from a few bullets either... SOOOO what's the real explanation?!?!?!?!? HE WAS HOPPED UP ON DRUGS!!! I thought that much was made clear in the video. I mean think about it, really just think...

there is a huge difference between hiding behind a gun and saving someone's life. if that idiot didn't die then the innocent person would've. so if you're saying you would prefer that the victim dies instead, then fine, that's your completely unreasonable unrationalized unbelievable opinion

Bath salts are a direct responce to the prohibition of drugs .. without the prohibition we would not have had this "zombie attack" ...really the most dangerous thing here is once again small mindedness.

Actually, I'd argue that using drugs, no matter what kind, is pretty small minded. It's kind of sad that some people need drugs to get a high and feel different from their normal life. If your life is that boring, ordinary or sad, I'd say you need to change something. Drugs don't fix these problems. In fact, I'd say more often than not,. they eventually compound the problem and create new ones. Sad, sad world we live in.

I think this is America and one should be able to put whatever they want into their body. If those substances couse you to loose it and hurt someone we have ways to deal with that. Face eating is still pretty rare. I though conservitives were all about freedom and having the gov not tell us what to do. I would like making drugs leagal would be a conservitive idea.

Mephedrone and related "bath salts" are NOT LSD. They are in no way chemically related to LSD, and their effects are not similar. Calling these dangerous substances the "new LSD" is misleading journalism.

really? bc just last I week talked to a couple junkies who told me it was like meth and lsd combined- I was talking to them bc my relative was a junkie and had just been killed so I wanted to know what kind of stuff he was on. The actual ingredients might not be the same but the effects are. Your comment is like saying magic mushrooms aren't like LSD (and yes before you say it I've tripped just as hard on mushrooms as I have on LSD in fact it was on mushrooms that I went to the “spirit world” and was told not to come back and 15 yrs later I never have!). See the thing is most people don't know chemical compounds, but they know and compare experiences and these junkies that I talked to told me that it can and does cause hallucinations.

Sumday, there's a huge difference between the harsh reality-twisting of LSD and the natural buzz of shrooms or cactus, and the presence of hallucinations isn't enough to say they are the same. Heroin makes people hallucinate too, at first. Lots of poisons make you see things, but that's not where you want to be. You got the idea; learn something and get out.

a chemical relation to LSD has nothing to do with how a person experiences it +_+.. that's like comparing general and local anesthesia. "well general only numbs a certain area, but local numbs the entire body" they both still cause numbness -_-
