Suspect in cafe killings shoots self, Seattle police say

[Updated at 7:47 p.m. ET] Seattle police say the same suspect was behind both of the fatal shootings Wednesday that left a total of four people dead and two critically wounded. The suspect shot himself as police closed in.

[Updated at 7:25 p.m. ET] A man believed to be the gunman in the killings at a Seattle cafe shot himself as police moved in on him Wednesday afternoon, police said. His condition was not immediately known.

[Updated at 6:22 p.m. ET] A fourth fatality has been reported in a shooting at a Seattle cafe and an apparent carjacking that already left two men and a woman dead, and three others seriously wounded, police reported Wednesday.

Two men were killed at a coffeehouse in the city's University District, while a woman died in the carjacking, Seattle police said. Three more people - another two men and a woman - were wounded at the coffeehouse. One victim in the cafe shooting has life threatening injuries, and two others are seriously wounded, according to police.

Investigators were looking for any connections between the two incidents, which happened about four miles and a few minutes apart, police spokesmen said.

"We're definitely in a dynamic situation right now," Deputy Police Chief Nick Metz told reporters.

Police found the black Mercedes SUV involved in the apparent carjacking abandoned. Video from the scene showed a handgun on the driver's seat of the vehicle. A K-9 is being used to track the suspect. Police officers have brought the dog to inspect the vehicle a few times during the search.

The suspect is described as a white male, between 30 and 40 years old, with a medium build, brown hair and a goatee or beard, police said. He fled on foot following the shooting at the cafe, police said.

"Whether he is armed at this time, we don't know," Metz said. But he added, "We're assuming he's very dangerous."

Metz warned residents in the area not to open their doors if anyone came by who they did not know. He also urged residents to make sure all their doors were locked.

CNN affiliate KIRO reported multiple ambulances, police officers and fire trucks were at the scene.

I hope it wasn't someone I know. I don't like murderers. Self defense is one thing but murder is disgusting. If you know someone is a murderer what do you do? Ignore it and just consider it a negative aspect of their personality? Our sheepish approach to some things is absurdity. Freedom is important but so is a system that is diligently seeking justice. This guy doesn't deserve a trial. He deserves a bullet and he's hardly worth that.

What are you talking about? I am a Seattlelite and a minority. We are all scared and shocked by what is happening here. There have been a number of shootings in the past seven days and not all were by one race. Do your research and shut the hell up.

What are you talking about? Do you think we're a bunch of racists here in Seattle? This is a HUMAN issue. Not a race issue. Focusing on the race thing detracts from what's happening.

There have been 2 shootings in Seattle today. This one at the Cafe Racer on Roosevelt, and the SUV carjacking was a separate incident on 8th and Seneca. They don't appear to be related but the article makes it sound like they are.

Actually, Will. I happened to know they are related. It's a shooter who is driving around shooting people at random.

Unlike shootings done by minorities, I have a feeling there was no motive to this shooting, it was probably random. The person responsible just wanted to murder people, white folks are off that.

Pushing these stories into the national spotlight is something new and might just be background work for gun control legislation. Our AG Eric Holder said the subject needed to be pushed and pushed hard so that citizens become "brain washed" into believing that no ordinary citizen should have a gun, only the police, the military and criminals.

The US Attorney General said that criminals should have guns? That seems strange seeing as how US law prohibits felons from owning guns. Maybe you should be more careful to stick to facts before you start to rant.

We've had 18 shooting deaths so far this year in Seattle. So, you think everyone should have a gun? One nut job shot at someone for saying something he didn't like, another one got hit in the head with a skateboard and decided to shoot. Do you think that' justifies shooting? Have you looked to other "developed" nations whose citizens don't have guns and how infrequently they have random shooting deaths? We have become numb to senseless shootings in our country. Contrary to popular belief we are not a war zone.

See guys, ban guns and only criminals will have guns. Had someone in the shop been carrying, that guy would not have made it out the door. But for some reason, Libs don't get it.

    • Stand Your Ground!

Even if you were to make guns illegal it doesn't mean shootings won't happen. People planning to break the law already aren't going to care if they break the law more. It's like stealing a car and then being concerned about getting a speeding ticket. Not going to happen. Sorry, but if someone threatens my family, I'm not going to stop my husband from taking them out, or for doing it myself. Do I want to? No, but if it's them or us, it's them.

Wow, so my post got deleted. I'm from Seattle and have a friend who lives just two blocks from the shooting and is scared to leave her house. We've had 18 deaths from bullets this year. The shootings are random here. There's (some) that are gang-related, but there are many that happen because someone makes a disparaging comment (happened in Shoreline, WA where a girl was shot and killed) or a guy decided to spray bullets at a friend who hit him with a skateboard. Really? This is not normal. We need to revisit our Second Ammendment like NOW.

Revisit the 2nd Amendment and do what? Legislate away our GOD GIVEN RIGHTS TO SELF DEFENSE? Are you stupid or something? There is nothing to revisit. Every single one of us have the inherent right to defend ourselves. You nor anyone like you will EVER take that away. You can try, but you will never succeed. "People willing to trade their freedom for temporary security deserve neither and will lose both."
