Suspect in cafe killings shoots self, Seattle police say

[Updated at 7:47 p.m. ET] Seattle police say the same suspect was behind both of the fatal shootings Wednesday that left a total of four people dead and two critically wounded. The suspect shot himself as police closed in.

[Updated at 7:25 p.m. ET] A man believed to be the gunman in the killings at a Seattle cafe shot himself as police moved in on him Wednesday afternoon, police said. His condition was not immediately known.

[Updated at 6:22 p.m. ET] A fourth fatality has been reported in a shooting at a Seattle cafe and an apparent carjacking that already left two men and a woman dead, and three others seriously wounded, police reported Wednesday.

Two men were killed at a coffeehouse in the city's University District, while a woman died in the carjacking, Seattle police said. Three more people - another two men and a woman - were wounded at the coffeehouse. One victim in the cafe shooting has life threatening injuries, and two others are seriously wounded, according to police.

Investigators were looking for any connections between the two incidents, which happened about four miles and a few minutes apart, police spokesmen said.

"We're definitely in a dynamic situation right now," Deputy Police Chief Nick Metz told reporters.

Police found the black Mercedes SUV involved in the apparent carjacking abandoned. Video from the scene showed a handgun on the driver's seat of the vehicle. A K-9 is being used to track the suspect. Police officers have brought the dog to inspect the vehicle a few times during the search.

The suspect is described as a white male, between 30 and 40 years old, with a medium build, brown hair and a goatee or beard, police said. He fled on foot following the shooting at the cafe, police said.

"Whether he is armed at this time, we don't know," Metz said. But he added, "We're assuming he's very dangerous."

Metz warned residents in the area not to open their doors if anyone came by who they did not know. He also urged residents to make sure all their doors were locked.

CNN affiliate KIRO reported multiple ambulances, police officers and fire trucks were at the scene.

Like hell we need strict gun control laws. Those would do absolutely nothing to prevent this. Do you really think that someone bent on homicide will give a rip about whether it's legal to possess a firearm? Give me a break.

How many ex-cons possess firearms when it isn't legal, even though they run the risk of going back to prison? Lots. Does that law stop them from possessing them? Nope.

      Wise up.

Really? More gun control laws, how will that help when the myriad of gun control laws already on the books are rarely and unevenly enforced. Adding more gun control laws only adds to the number of laws not enforced.

Do you really think that people who shoot others give a moments worth of thought to the current gun laws and the possible effect it would have on them if caught?

More useless gun control laws indeed. Just another knee jerk reaction to a tragedy. No thought process invaded your brain did it?

Yes stricter gun control, because obviously the person the killed 3 people in cold blood, and then hijacked a car at gun point, is obviously a law abiding citizen that would have been stopped in his tracks by another gun law. GENIUS!

Good thing cars are legal here and easy to get. GO FORD! Maybe we should ban those too or just all of the red ones. Nonsense. Desperate people kill and will find a way and a tool to do it without regard for human life or the rights of others.

But why make it easier for them? I sure as hell would rather defend myself from a knife-weilding criminal than one with a gun pointed at me.

so true Brenda, lets just give out grenades, and oozies and ak47's and daisy cutters etc, because the bad guys will find a way to kill anyway. Heck, lets let all illegal substances now become legal, because the bad guys will find a way to do what they want to do. You really are an air head...

If you do not believe in any form of gun control, then you must believe you can drive to work in an Abrams to work. After all, the Abrams' 120mm gun is just your "right to bear arms" protected by Second Amendment rights.

Not sure what is going on here. I work in Downtown Seattle and within 30 minutes of this shooting another suspect shot and killed a woman in an attempted car jacking a few blocks from me. RIP to all victims.

How many restrictions do you accept on your right to vote, free speech, a woman's right to choose? I feel the same about my right to own a gun. I do not care what some idiot in seatle or chicago has done. It, like all of our rights, is an individual, not collective right.

correct, a village idiot like you will only care when it's someone in your family. Then you'll blubber like the little girl that you are about more gun laws really being the answer, and how you wished the gunmen didn't have such easy access to weapons.

Let's say concealed gun laws or open carry law was free for all americans to have, and lets say 80 percent of people are packing heat now. If a crazy gunman starts shooting people from a hidden location, and then everyone with a gun takes it out in response, how do you know who is the shooter? How do you avoid the world's largest 'mexican standoff'?

As opposed to strict gun laws where only the criminal has a weapon while hundreds of unarmed citizens cannot defend themselves.

gun owners aren't very smart...that's why they end up killing people and "accidents" happen with their own weapons with their own loved ones.

Only the bad ppl would die in conceal and carry situation. That's what the NRA believes, so it must be true ! Those morons don't think more incidents where innocent people would die could possibly occur if everyone was armed
