Suspect in cafe killings shoots self, Seattle police say

[Updated at 7:47 p.m. ET] Seattle police say the same suspect was behind both of the fatal shootings Wednesday that left a total of four people dead and two critically wounded. The suspect shot himself as police closed in.

[Updated at 7:25 p.m. ET] A man believed to be the gunman in the killings at a Seattle cafe shot himself as police moved in on him Wednesday afternoon, police said. His condition was not immediately known.

[Updated at 6:22 p.m. ET] A fourth fatality has been reported in a shooting at a Seattle cafe and an apparent carjacking that already left two men and a woman dead, and three others seriously wounded, police reported Wednesday.

Two men were killed at a coffeehouse in the city's University District, while a woman died in the carjacking, Seattle police said. Three more people - another two men and a woman - were wounded at the coffeehouse. One victim in the cafe shooting has life threatening injuries, and two others are seriously wounded, according to police.

Investigators were looking for any connections between the two incidents, which happened about four miles and a few minutes apart, police spokesmen said.

"We're definitely in a dynamic situation right now," Deputy Police Chief Nick Metz told reporters.

Police found the black Mercedes SUV involved in the apparent carjacking abandoned. Video from the scene showed a handgun on the driver's seat of the vehicle. A K-9 is being used to track the suspect. Police officers have brought the dog to inspect the vehicle a few times during the search.

The suspect is described as a white male, between 30 and 40 years old, with a medium build, brown hair and a goatee or beard, police said. He fled on foot following the shooting at the cafe, police said.

"Whether he is armed at this time, we don't know," Metz said. But he added, "We're assuming he's very dangerous."

Metz warned residents in the area not to open their doors if anyone came by who they did not know. He also urged residents to make sure all their doors were locked.

CNN affiliate KIRO reported multiple ambulances, police officers and fire trucks were at the scene.

if only someone with a conceal and carry permit was there to save the day! Oh how that argument is flawed...the second ammendment is completely misinterpreted.

Perhaps you would like to share your interpretation of the second amendment, since the supreme court justices apparently got it wrong and you have the answer.

conceal and carry is the answer to all of our prayers though ! Everyone should have a gun and then this would have NEVER occured. And no innocent people would ever get shot, so NRA and 2nd amendment really are the answer !

Yeah, have you ever watched the test videos where they had a group of CHL folks who were quite "good" with their weapons and confident they would react well in a "situation" come in and get "shot at"? The videos are very telling. Many innocent people were "shot" by these "experts" and "bullets" were flying everywhere. This was in a situation where these gun enthusiasts knew they were going to have this happen. Imagine how they react when it is unexpected.

Can't do that easily down here in Georgia. We have the right to carry concealed or openly with license of course. I got mine all the time on me. People might thing that's crazy but there are to many homegrown terrorists and international extremist who would do anything and If I ever get a position where I have to protect my family, so be it. People cry for stricter gun law but that would only hurt the ones who are responsible gun owners. A thug can and will always be able to get his or hands on a weapon.

If and when a determined assailant decides to take out a few innocents, no amount of "concealed licences" will stop him, moment of surprise being on his side. This could just as easily happen in Georgia or Texas..

you're so right Dennis, that piece of paper to conceal and carry really does keep you toothless georgia hillbillies safe. Heck, that's the answer to all of america's problems. A conceal and carry permit would make the whole country safe, with no innocent people being gunned down. You southern people are so bright !

Dennis - while I generally agree with you, you're puffing up and being foolish. This sounds like a pro hit-job. Guy walks up to you while you're engaged in conversation, drinking a latte, sticks a gun to your head and pulls the trigger - you can have ten handguns on you and six marksman medals, and you're gonna end up just as dead. Not a darn thing you can do, my friend.

And Canada never has shootings? Wrong, and with the very strict gun control laws, where do you think those criminals in Canada get their guns, do the even worry about breaking those laws? You simply end up with an unarmed citizenry and only the outlaws have guns. Never bring fists to a gun fight.

"Never bring fists to a gun fight."

So, how do you propose to even HOLD a gun, much less FIRE it, if you don't even bring your fists?

Compare per capita number of homicides committed with firearms in Canada and US. When sufficiently awed, speak again.

I love the argument that "if only someone was there who had a concealed gun they could have taken down the gunman." Well there was someone there with a gun. And he killed three people. It's the psychos' who want to walk around with a gun who end up using them. Big surprise there.

yes keith, your contention fully, completely, and totally explains why these kind of shooting NEVER happen at a shooting range, a gun store, or any other place where the person BEING shot at has a gun...

Chris is right Keith, because gun ranges and bullet stores really are around on every corner like coffee shops are. Those gun toting morons will give you any stupid fact to make it sound like every toothless hick that has a gun is much safer than the rest of us.

When a white guy commits murder, people like you consider it an exception but it also an everyday event. If you review the stats within each race you would see the percentage of bad people are the same.
