'Vampire' graves may bring hordes to Bulgaria

The discovery of the graves of suspected vampires in Bulgaria may turn into a tourism gold mine, according to local news reports.

During excavations of a monastery in the city of Sozopol, Bulgaria's National Museum of History says it unearthed two skeletons that showed the deceased person had been stabbed through the heart with an iron rod.

"This was (the) customary way (in) Bulgarian medieval tradition to deal with people which were presumed to be vampires," the museum's website says.

People at the time of the burial of the skeletons, about 700 years ago, thought that stabbing the corpses multiple times with an iron rod through the heart would prevent the dead from rising and attacking the living, museum director Bozhidar Dimitrov said, according to a report from the Sofia News Agency.

Dimitrov said more than 100 such "vampire" burials have been discovered in Bulgaria over the years, according to the Sofia News Agency.

But headlines of the latest find have piqued interest in the U.S., Europe and Asia, the report said, and tour operators are fielding inquiries about what it called "vampire vacations."

Already, people were lining up at the excavation site at the monastery of St. Nicolas the Wonderworker, the Sofia News Agency reported.

Big lines for vampires could pump even more blood into the country's expanding tourism industry. Bulgaria led the European Union last year in the increase in hotel occupancy by foreigners, with numbers up almost 20% over the previous year.

No stats on how many of those folks slept with the lights on, however.

This is why the world hates America ... and they are right to do so ... glittery vampires and even in a recession ... somehow enough money to take trips to tourist traps in backwaters to visit "vampire" (aka ancient Bulgarian lynching victims) graves.

Isn't that just capitalism at it's finest? Take a 'natural resource' and exploit it to the masses of interested parties? I would think you'd be in hog heaven over this...or, are you just ashamed to admit you'd like to take the tour?

Except for the fact that Republicans troll the internet all day long. Also, if you're so concerned with the actions of the 'spendocrats' ; how about we let them reduce the Defense Budget as they had originally planned, since you're so concerned with government overspending. Oh that's right, Republicans refuse to compromise, and would rather spend tax dollars on the bottomless hole that is Defense rather than using those tax dollars to help people. One party = pro society, the other party = blindly patriotic and intent on governing according to their fear of anything they perceive as being non american.

You mean to politicize it by stating that vampires dont exist and that these people were probably murdered by ignorant religious zealots. You think religious ignorance would have died off years ago, but unfortunetly its stronger than ever.

THey weren't murderd for bieng vampires. As corpses decay blood can run out of the mouth, in ages past this was taken to mean that the dead body had risen from the grave to feed on the living. Thus the verious methods of 'killing' vampires. Sometimes a stake or rod through the heart to either kill or pin the 'vampire' sometimes they would just burn the corpse. In other words, these people were already days or weeks dead before they were staked.

    • charlotte

There's NO indication that any of these people was "murdered," you dork. The stakes were driven through the hearts OF THE DEAD. That means they had already died. Reading comprehension not one of the skills trught in your elementary school, apparently.

    • symboybot

Strictly speaking you can't murder a vampire because they are already dead. These desicrated bodies were just that – corpses that had a stake driven through their hearts – after they were already dead!

The richer get richer because many people get lazier. End of story. Instead of complaining about what you do not have, how about you go out and get it. Capitalism rewards innovators and those that work hard. So instead of complaining get out there and try to make something happen. Don't be the fly on the horses ass. I know many people that were born in middle-class families that have worked their way into the one-percent.

This is way off -story, but I had to reply. The idea that capitalism specifically rewards either hard work or innovation is a common misconception, and most people who study economics would tell you that's a misrepresentation of capitalism. Go into most coporations (I spent a lot of years working with sr. execs before going into business for myself) and you'll discover that most VPs, CEOs, etc. are not particularly innovative, smart or hardworking. The common thread is that they are usually well-connected, either because of birth, associations acquired during education (whcih usually means they became well connected by connecting with someone born wealthy) or because they have one of those types of personalities (this is most common among people who come up through the sales force). The true entreprenuers, the Bill Gateses of the world, are in the minority. In fact, within a corporation, the better you are at a specific skill, and the harder you work, the less chance that you will be promoted, as you would be tougher to replace. However, in an era when corporations have gotten very good at keeping workers scared, don't expect that skill to translate into better income. After all, how are sr. executive wages going to go up by double digits every year if they have to give raises to the people who actually do the work?
