The discovery of the graves of suspected vampires in Bulgaria may turn into a tourism gold mine, according to local news reports.
During excavations of a monastery in the city of Sozopol, Bulgaria's National Museum of History says it unearthed two skeletons that showed the deceased person had been stabbed through the heart with an iron rod.
"This was (the) customary way (in) Bulgarian medieval tradition to deal with people which were presumed to be vampires," the museum's website says.
People at the time of the burial of the skeletons, about 700 years ago, thought that stabbing the corpses multiple times with an iron rod through the heart would prevent the dead from rising and attacking the living, museum director Bozhidar Dimitrov said, according to a report from the Sofia News Agency.
Dimitrov said more than 100 such "vampire" burials have been discovered in Bulgaria over the years, according to the Sofia News Agency.
But headlines of the latest find have piqued interest in the U.S., Europe and Asia, the report said, and tour operators are fielding inquiries about what it called "vampire vacations."
Already, people were lining up at the excavation site at the monastery of St. Nicolas the Wonderworker, the Sofia News Agency reported.
Big lines for vampires could pump even more blood into the country's expanding tourism industry. Bulgaria led the European Union last year in the increase in hotel occupancy by foreigners, with numbers up almost 20% over the previous year.
No stats on how many of those folks slept with the lights on, however.

Ya Dr. Trevay: I saw this documentary called Daybreakers. That explains it all.
There were many ways to kill vampires back in the good old days...lol.
This sounds fascinating, though...
Blood suckers also exist today in many companies, mainly taking the form of CEOs and Vice-Presidents.
Good one !!!!
Dr Trevay, we vampires monitor the CNN forums and now you are on the radar....
This is why the world hates America ... and they are right to do so ... glittery vampires and even in a recession ... somehow enough money to take trips to tourist traps in backwaters to visit "vampire" (aka ancient Bulgarian lynching victims) graves.
Ancient Bulgarian lynching victims?
Really?
Isn't that just capitalism at it's finest? Take a 'natural resource' and exploit it to the masses of interested parties? I would think you'd be in hog heaven over this...or, are you just ashamed to admit you'd like to take the tour?
GEESH Hate America much? Maybe you should go live somewhere else. No where did that article say it was AMERICANS that were visiting Bulgaria
Jealous much?
heard that the world hates America enough that America no longer cares
The Lord of Excess GEESH Hate America much? Maybe you should go live somewhere else. No where did that article say it was AMERICANS that were visiting Bulgaria
It's amazing how often non-Americans actually believe negative stereotypes.
love it! Now if we could only get GW and Cheney to voluntarily go the same way, only their evil deeds will live forever
Only a liberal troll would resort to politisizing an inocuous story. Nice one. And in keeping with your motives, I'm sure that Nancy Pelosi is a vampire because she sucks!
Right on brother. Conservatives never troll. Especially on CNN. BTW when we finally kick Obama and those Spendocrats out of the senate we should do this to their careers so those vampires don't come back.
@John, some of the most Conservative ones are the worst trolls and hijackers. Poor them though, they have to change theirs UN's multiple times to say how they really feel. Then they use a good guy name to pretend that they are libs.
A lot can happen between now and November...
You're right, conservatives never troll...except on race issues. They're not here because they're all trolling on the story about the funeral shooting in Georgia spewing their filth.
yeah, brother! i'm sick of this undisciplined spending on all sorts of non-military distractions. we need to focus 100% on war like the good ole days. boo, yeah!
Except for the fact that Republicans troll the internet all day long. Also, if you're so concerned with the actions of the 'spendocrats' ; how about we let them reduce the Defense Budget as they had originally planned, since you're so concerned with government overspending. Oh that's right, Republicans refuse to compromise, and would rather spend tax dollars on the bottomless hole that is Defense rather than using those tax dollars to help people. One party = pro society, the other party = blindly patriotic and intent on governing according to their fear of anything they perceive as being non american.
On the other hand, Republicans read news on Faux, and then come to CNN for trolling.
Right. And don't forget to start another war or two – because they don't cost a penny!!
That's trolling.
Pot, meet kettle.
Was waiting for someone to say that! "LIKE"
It's innocuous, Mark, and you close. Nancy P is closer to a vampire than you think. Can you say Illuminati? That's even more frightening. ewww, gives me the chills just thinking about them.
Too bad that Philip has you so brainwashed Ms. Hecht!!!
@@Mary, Of course that is your opinion and your welcome to it.
Maybe you could stop being a coward and use your own name, then and only then will I have a conversation you.
Good nite to you
And just as real.....:/
This has nothing to do with politics. Stop politicizing everything you see. It's quite tiresome.
Poor Mary, still believe in the protocols of the elders of zion, too, eh?
Poor Mark....
Fox still not letting you post over at racist central?
Well welcome to Fox.
You can bet we'll take good care of you here.
LOL....
You mean to politicize it by stating that vampires dont exist and that these people were probably murdered by ignorant religious zealots. You think religious ignorance would have died off years ago, but unfortunetly its stronger than ever.
THey weren't murderd for bieng vampires. As corpses decay blood can run out of the mouth, in ages past this was taken to mean that the dead body had risen from the grave to feed on the living. Thus the verious methods of 'killing' vampires. Sometimes a stake or rod through the heart to either kill or pin the 'vampire' sometimes they would just burn the corpse. In other words, these people were already days or weeks dead before they were staked.
There's NO indication that any of these people was "murdered," you dork. The stakes were driven through the hearts OF THE DEAD. That means they had already died. Reading comprehension not one of the skills trught in your elementary school, apparently.
Strictly speaking you can't murder a vampire because they are already dead. These desicrated bodies were just that – corpses that had a stake driven through their hearts – after they were already dead!
You mean Bella Pelosi?
Bella Pelosi, that's a good one.
Lolz
What is it like to be a republican fascist? You are such a jerk commenting and insulting others who have NOTHING to do with this story. You are a bitter mean person. Grow up and quit watching FOX "news".
They can't grow past a certain point....Its not in their DNA....They have absolutely no critical thinking skills or they are sociopaths, maybe even lead around by the nose(fear)
Can't come up with anything better than calling names? Pitiful!
You sounds the one doing the trolling – what does this article have to do with politics – its not even in the US – GROW UP
Mark, sorry to say but you have a better chance of having a thoughtful conversation with a rock than some of the liberals commenting here. Their hate just clouds their minds to other opinions.
For that matter, there's a whole batch of brain-dead ones in the GOP.
There are trolls in both parties. The conservative trolls usually wait for race-related stories which is why they're not here. They're all out trolling at the story on the funeral shooting in Georgia.
Aren't you politicizing right now with your comment?
Yah, 'cause conservative trolls would never stoop to politicizing otherwise neutral events...
True Vampires never SUCK. We drink the blood from the jugular vain in the neck.
Does she? How do you know?
I have to disagree. No self-respecting vampire would do Pelosi.
The lycans are using this as a cover to shift the focus on to the vampire covens.
"Big lines for vampires could pump even more blood".....Pun Intended?
Being a Vampire back then must of sucked.
I wonder if they could hit a baseball 2,000 feet and make a catch 70 feet up a tree.
Oh come on there dead and theres no such thing as vampires, werewolves or zombies. people watch to many dumb movies
SIGH they're and there's some people don't watch enough sesame street
i guess(:
Yuri nosa
Happy birthday Katherin(:
The 17 broke Goth kids that make the trek to Bulgaria will really soup up their tourist industry.
The richer get richer because many people get lazier. End of story. Instead of complaining about what you do not have, how about you go out and get it. Capitalism rewards innovators and those that work hard. So instead of complaining get out there and try to make something happen. Don't be the fly on the horses ass. I know many people that were born in middle-class families that have worked their way into the one-percent.
This is way off -story, but I had to reply. The idea that capitalism specifically rewards either hard work or innovation is a common misconception, and most people who study economics would tell you that's a misrepresentation of capitalism. Go into most coporations (I spent a lot of years working with sr. execs before going into business for myself) and you'll discover that most VPs, CEOs, etc. are not particularly innovative, smart or hardworking. The common thread is that they are usually well-connected, either because of birth, associations acquired during education (whcih usually means they became well connected by connecting with someone born wealthy) or because they have one of those types of personalities (this is most common among people who come up through the sales force). The true entreprenuers, the Bill Gateses of the world, are in the minority. In fact, within a corporation, the better you are at a specific skill, and the harder you work, the less chance that you will be promoted, as you would be tougher to replace. However, in an era when corporations have gotten very good at keeping workers scared, don't expect that skill to translate into better income. After all, how are sr. executive wages going to go up by double digits every year if they have to give raises to the people who actually do the work?
