Mash-up: Gaga joke, 'pig in a poke'

The CNN Daily Mash-up is a roundup of some of the most interesting, surprising, curious, poignant or significant items to appear on CNN.com in the past 24 hours. We top it with a collection of the day's most striking photographs from around the world.

Step away from the soda

The mayor of Cambridge (Our Fair City), Massachusetts, unveiled a proposal Monday that would outlaw large-size sodas and other sugary drinks in area restaurants. As happened when New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg made a similar proposal, CNN readers had strong feelings. To wit:

This is crazy to me. You could walk into any fast food place, order yourself 3 triple cheddar bacon double cheeseburgers, but have any extra sprite and that is ultimately making you unhealthy/ overweight. Stop beating around the bush with this. If you want to get rid of fast food businesses fine, but don't say it's the temptation of a third diet coke that is ultimately the problem that needs fixing.

Tony

I feel like I should move to a secluded cabin in the woods and begin writing my manifesto.

 Crustacean of a different color

You may recall the rare blue lobster that appeared in this space a little more than a week ago. Well, this seafood restaurant found a whole passel of oddly colored (but not blue) crustaceans.

Not born this way

School Principal Justin Vernon made a promise to his students, and the "little monsters" held him to it. Vernon, the principal of Roger Clapp School in Dorchester, Massachusetts, told K-5 students that if they would read 10,000 books, he would do anything they demanded. They did it, and Vernon is a man of his word. This explains why Mr. Vernon showed up at school dressed as Lady Gaga and later milked a cow. CNN affiliate WHDH has all the details - and the video.

Who's walking whom?

CNN iReporter Jim Grant of La Costa, California, documents a dog walker strolling down Ocean Beach, San Diego, with nearly a dozen Australian dwarf terriers sporting brightly colored clothes. "It's not often you see a person walking more than three dogs. He had 10, and one in his jacket,"  Grant reported.

Lay your cards on the table

Attorney General Eric Holder has risked contempt-of-Congress charges by refusing to turn over all the documents demanded by Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee. The panel is investigating the Justice Department's botched Fast and Furious gun-tracking operation. Sen. Charles Grassley of Iowa, the ranking Republican member of the committee, said Holder was seeking to cover himself before turning over any of the requested information. Grassley said:

The attorney general wants to trade a briefing and the promise of delivering some small, unspecified set of documents tomorrow for a free pass today. He wants to turn over only what he wants to turn over and not give us any information about what he's not turning over. That's unacceptable. I'm not going to buy a pig in a poke.

On the horizon: Sandusky closings, Supreme Court opinions

After the defense rested Wednesday without calling former Penn State football assistant coach Jerry Sandusky to testify, the judge in the child sex-abuse case scheduled closing arguments to begin at 9 a.m. Thursday.

The Supreme Court will issue opinions on a number of cases Thursday, possibly including a challenge to the Affordable Care Act, President Barack Obama's signature health-care reform law.

Re coloured lobsters: How rare are they really? There was just a story on this blog a couple of days ago about a blue one. Show me an INVISIBLE lobster. That'll be something.

Re Jennifer Lopez: My, she's just an unattractive cow, isn't she?

Re Principal dressed as woman: If it was me, I would go with the Monty Python pepperpot look.

Mara Salvatrucha prepare for a play in prison, with the paper prop guns and weapons
    – were they enacting a gang fight to keep themselves prepared so as not to lose their finesse when they get released ?
    – or are they compulsively addicted to gang fight and even if it meant paper props, the fight must go on?
