WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange will be arrested if he comes out of the Ecuadorian Embassy in London where he is seeking asylum, a Metropolitan Police representative at the scene said Thursday, without giving his name.
Assange was arrested in Britain in 2010 because Swedish authorities want to question him about allegations of rape and sexual molestation. His bail conditions included staying every night at the home of a supporter outside of London.
Why Assange needs Ecuador and Ecuador needs Assange
Two women have accused Assange of sexually assaulting them during an August 2010 visit to Sweden in connection with a WikiLeaks release of internal U.S. military documents. He was arrested in Britain that December and has been fighting extradition ever since, arguing the allegations are retribution for his organization's disclosure of American secrets.
Assange's only further legal recourse would be to apply immediately to the European Court of Human Rights, and his attorneys have vowed to do so. He has said he fears that if he is extradited to Sweden, authorities there could hand him over to the United States, where he then could be prosecuted for his role in the leaking of classified documents.
Assange has not been charged with a crime, but Swedish prosecutors want to question him about allegations of "unlawful coercion and sexual misconduct including rape," according to a Supreme Court document. Ecuador said its decision to consider Assange's asylum request "should in no way be interpreted as the government of Ecuador interfering in the judicial processes of either the United Kingdom or Sweden."
Julian Assange: Loathed, admired, here to stay
WikiLeaks, which facilitates the anonymous leaking of secret information, has published some 250,000 confidential U.S. diplomatic cables, causing embarrassment to the government and others. It also has published hundreds of thousands of classified U.S. documents relating to the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
@Todd, Sorry dude but you are one dumb American. Henry Ford made the first "mass produced" car not the first car by a mile... he was very far from the inventor of it just the refiner of it. A Canadian invented the phone, a man named Alexander Gramm Bell on our east coast the very first phone call was made although the thief Edison tried to steal that idea too and same with the lightbulb. Many people were actually working on different light bulbs at the same time and before him but as usual the thief pulled the wool over other American eyes. Nowadays people know the truth... and in reality the egyptians had lightbulb like devices thousands of years ago with batteries to boot (google it). The computer is simply the next evolution of "math machines" the world worked on for years before IBM made it big. That "might" be American but likely Germans and others behind it... just like "your" A-bomb. When you guys were breaking the sound barrier Canada was working on jets that would go mach 2.3 to 3.0 (Avro Arrow). Most of "USA's" big claims are actually other peoples...just like NASA putting man on the moon with German Nazi Rockets (again look it up, its a fact, basically they were V3 rockets based on V2 tech.... using the exact same Nazi scientists you took from Germany and protected after WW2. Typicall American education seems to teach nothing of history, and nothing of the rest of the world...unless you believe in fantasies? You created Las Vegas.. a city in the friggin desert... pat yourselves on the back and keep watching all the Canadian's in your movies, TV shows, music....ect. I could go on and on...
What did u really expect from a nation that thinks Columbus discovered America? Or who believes the real news comes from the daily show on a station called comedy central?
I hope they arrest this jerk Assange. He put so many lives in danger...
If the Chinese can release Chen Guangcheng last month after he took refuge in the US Embassy in Beijing, it doesn't take much imagination to think the British can let Assange go to Ecuador.
You mean to tell me the Chinese are much more enlightened regarding human rights than the British?
So it seems.
Or is realpolitik all too real? The USA always gets what it wants even if it has to be shameful about it. Ecuador is a lightweight unfortunately and the UK will play hardball so as to appease the Americans and- somewhat farther down the list- the Swedes.
Assange is a world class dissident. So is Chen Guangcheng. Both have huge trumped up crime sheets because of what they say about who. Like Chen, Assange is guilty of nothing more than standing up and saying, "I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!"
Why you aren't as mad as hell is simple to figure out. You just don't care. And you would rather see someone hang in the gallows than consider that what they did in fact do, is make the world better for you.
You are so 18th century. Admit that, and I would be happy to have a conversation with you. Let's talk about how great the cotton gin is... that is about your speed.
The guy is an idiot for making himself puplic as founder of wikileaks. But I dont think he should be killed for showing the people the truth behind the war. People should now why were still fighting a war. Husain and Bin ladin are dead but were still there? He just showed us that its all about oil/ money and who ever tells die buy CIA hit squads, that make there death look like car accidents, suicides and plane crashes. So I hope he takes a boat to ecuador.
I don't think too many life insurance companies are wanting to write a policy on this guy.
Let Assange respect the police order to avoid problems on top of others!
Guy's getting plenty of fame, real folk-hero. He can cap it off by writing a book. Ecuador? They're just happy someone can spell their name.
