Arizona Governor Jan Brewer on immigration ruling: We won

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer issued the following statement after the Supreme Court ruled on her state's controversial immigration law:

U.S. Supreme Court Decision Upholds Heart of SB 1070

“Today’s decision by the U.S. Supreme Court is a victory for the rule of law. It is also a victory for the 10th Amendment and all Americans who believe in the inherent right and responsibility of states to defend their citizens. After more than two years of legal challenges, the heart of SB 1070 can now be implemented in accordance with the U.S. Constitution.

“While we are grateful for this legal victory, today is an opportunity to reflect on our journey and focus upon the true task ahead: the implementation and enforcement of this law in an even-handed manner that lives up to our highest ideals as American citizens. I know the State of Arizona and its law enforcement officers are up to the task. The case for SB 1070 has always been about our support for the rule of law. That means every law, including those against both illegal immigration and racial profiling. Law enforcement will be held accountable should this statute be misused in a fashion that violates an individual’s civil rights.

“The last two years have been spent in preparation for this ruling. Upon signing SB 1070 in 2010, I issued an Executive Order directing the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (AZ POST) to develop and provide training to ensure our officers are prepared to enforce this law efficiently, effectively and in a manner consistent with the Constitution. In recent days, in anticipation of this decision, I issued a new Executive Order asking that this training be made available once again to all of Arizona’s law enforcement officers. I am confident our officers are prepared to carry out this law responsibly and lawfully. Nothing less is acceptable.

“Of course, today’s ruling does not mark the end of our journey. It can be expected that legal challenges to SB 1070 and the State of Arizona will continue. Our critics are already preparing new litigation tactics in response to their loss at the Supreme Court, and undoubtedly will allege inequities in the implementation of the law. As I said two years ago on the day I signed SB 1070 into law, ‘We cannot give them that chance. We must use this new tool wisely, and fight for our safety with the honor Arizona deserves.’”

Sadly, individual states have to reach the point of bankruptcy and failed education systems before enough support for COMMON SENSE solutions like SB1070 to be passed.

We the people, have and are allowing this. Unless, we force these ILLEGALS out, it will never happen. What the U.S. Supreme court did today, was to make all U.S. citizens null and void. You do not matter. You have to follow our laws, but ILLEGALS do not. Say Adios, to the U.S., because you will really have Mexicans running across your borders, now. You are done. There is nothing you, Americans can do to stop this tyrannical corrupt U.S. government from doing, whatever it chooses to you. Your only recourse is WAR.

All this BS in Brewers Arizona while in California and Florida immigrents flock in like nobodies business. There's definitly more immigrents coming in from Haiti,S.America,CostaRica,Cuba, just too many ethnicities to list to only make Arizona the poster child for immigration reform, imimigrents move into these two states more than Arizona could handle, its an epidemic here in Florida and I bet in California as well. Most of these states politicians are immigrents or children of past immigrents as well, the African Americans, caucasions that are born here are the minorities in these two states behind the booming population explosions of these immigrents having almost little or nonexistent border patrol presents to repel this illegal infusion.Put Brewer and her sheriff Arpaio on a ship to a foriegn country and let them see how it feels as an outsider just wanting to come in,be included, not excluded as a respected citizen, not getting the questionable looks from police and other authorities wondering when you're going to be stopped and detained, this is America.Almost all of you came from immigrents,so quit being so hypocritical just like these extremist republicans Brewer and Arpaio, welcome an immigrent, just like your forefathers, mothers were hopefully welcomed in their past...

Jan did every State a favuor by challenging the Feds. Now all states can write similiar laws, even FLs, Ca, etc. Don't call her a poster child, call her a fighter and hero.

Pete, why is it so hard for you to understand that no-one has a problem with legal immigration? You keep glossing over the fact that these people are here breaking our laws. You talk about respect? What about respect for our laws? If you don't like the laws then work to change them. You can't just ignore the ones you don't like.

Here's an idea: Make them all legal, so they and their employers have to pay taxes like the rest of us, and problem solved. WAY cheaper and less bureaucratic than all the money we waste trying to track them down and ship them back. Also way better for economy, since businesses and farms won't suddenly have a severe lack of employees, and spend thousands on looking for and hiring people for jobs no one wants, instead of focusing on doing a good job making and selling things we need.

jobs no one wants? nobody else can get business that hire illegals want illegals. its there business plan. it's frankly just cheaper. they get no benefits, cant complain about unsafe work environments, and can cheat them on there pay. and most states do nothing.

Lola should check her American/Mexican history. In 1848 the United States, even after winning the war with Mexico, agreed in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo to pay Mexico the sum of (in today's dollars) $400 million. That doesn't sound like stealing to me.

Just a side note to my previous post.

In the treaty mentioned above, all Mexicans living in the territories bought by the United States had a choice of either becoming Mexican or American citizens. All picked American citizenship. Also, the total Mexicans living in all of that vast territory came to 1,000 people. Hardly an area completely populated by Mexicans in a short time span of 22 years once the Spanish were gone.

ALL sectinos of the law should have been upheld. What part of "illegal" do ostensibly intelligent people...the "best and brightest" chosen for the Supreme Court... fail to understand?

if Arizona would get tough on the large corporations that hire illegals most of the problems would go away. But your talking about billions of dollars. Corporations can pay illegals less with no benefits and treat them like dirt because there's no over sight
kinda like how the republicans want to treat the middle class. what we need is trickle down immigration laws.

    --------------------------------
The decision had nothing to do with illegals, it had everything to do with AZ usurping Federal law. Period. They were, SCOTUS ruled in favor of the Feds.

MATT: You have the problem identified! LESS than minimum wage, NO benefits what so ever, no unions, raise cain and your fired, they can get 30 more to take your place, BUT not Americans! While easy to say we have let this go on for so long that to correct it now would result in $10 tomatos, etc..
