Mash-up: Not all immigration

The CNN Daily Mash-up is a roundup of some of the most interesting, surprising, curious, poignant or significant items to appear on CNN.com in the past 24 hours. We top it with a collection of the day's most striking photographs from around the world.

Everybody wins ... or not

The Supreme Court's split ruling on Arizona's immigration law, known as SB 1070, has both sides claiming victory and each side saying the other had better watch its step.

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer

Today's decision by the U.S. Supreme Court is a victory for the rule of law. It is also a victory for the 10th Amendment and all Americans who believe in the inherent right and responsibility of states to defend their citizens. After more than two years of legal challenges, the heart of SB 1070 can now be implemented in accordance with the U.S. Constitution.

President Barack Obama

I am pleased that the Supreme Court has struck down key provisions of Arizona's immigration law. What this decision makes unmistakably clear is that Congress must act on comprehensive immigration reform. A patchwork of state laws is not a solution to our broken immigration system - it's part of the problem.

Union leader: This will not stand

Sheriff Joe Arpaio: 'We do the right thing'

No shortage of opinions

Not surprisingly, our readers had their own reactions to the immigration ruling. A couple of the better exchanges in the discussion:

I don't get what the big deal is. If you are in the country illegally, using services you didn't pay for, you should be deported as you are committing a crime. If you don't want to be deported, then come to the country legally by filling out your paperwork. My grandparents did it. My parents did it.

ajhowardem

That's not the issue. Everyone believes that illegals should not be using U.S. resources. It was the way that they were going to find these people, which would have basically boiled down to harassment of illegals and legals that were not white. What we should do is research businesses that hire these people and fine the crap out of them. If we cut off the reason they are coming (low-paying jobs), then we can stop them from coming in the first place. However, no one wants to do that.

A sad state of affairs when the Supreme Court takes the sides of criminals (illegal aliens) and against American citizens. Not a good way to celebrate the U.S. birthday next week.

kathy0715

It's a wonderful day when the Supreme Court takes the side of the Constitution, which it has here.  Enjoy the 4th.

New York's Coney Island celebrates summer like few other places.

And now for something completely different

CNN iReporter Rachel Cauvin was at Coney Island's celebration of the start of summer, the Mermaid Parade. Countless people were dressed in stunning costumes, she said. "There were so many that I loved, but I am partial to the ladies who painted their faces and held colorful parasols," she said.

No joke: Comedy club bouncers save dogs

A parked van with two dogs inside caught fire behind a supermarket Sunday night in La Jolla, California. Passers-by heard the dogs barking inside the van and alerted bouncers at the nearby Comedy Store, who got the dogs out safely. CNN affiliate KGTV reveals what the dogs' owners were doing when the fire broke out.

On the horizon: Books from Edwards' mistress, Winehouse's father

Amy Winehouse

Tuesday will see the release of "What Really Happened," Rielle Hunter's account of her affair with former U.S. senator and presidential candidate John Edwards. Edwards' political career was ruined by the scandal, but a jury refused to convict him of any crimes related to it. Also Tuesday, Mitch Winehouse will release his book, "Amy, My Daughter," about the mercurial singer who died last year in London.

I'm a Democrat but what Obama said was appalling, we have laws already which simply aren't being enforced. I honestly don't understand why people spend so much time and money coming into this country legally anymore. The immigrants who do the right thing are punished, the ones who do it the wrong way are rewarded. It's disgusting.

I am a US citizen. My sister wanted to come here to see me.She went to embassy gave her house dead to be in the embassy, the house worth of $600,000. (The house was not in the bank name, she had owned the house) to just give her and her daughter to come here for two weeks to visit me. They did not issue a visa to them as they said you will leave your daughter there. She only had one daughter and I don't think I don't think it was worth it to be here and pay $600,000.

This is disgusting that they have one rule for US citizen and another rule for illegal people.

First of all, all of you people including me are here illegally. This is not our land, this land belong to the Natives. The white europeans stole this land. So I wish every one would STFU, about who enters here illegal. Now I dont mind people coming illegally, i just dont care for the gangs to start. But like I said we are all Illegal. Plus this is God's country and world not the USA's. and I am an american for your information.... (Not Hispanic btw) but I do love my hispanic brothers and sisters

Please get an education." Natives" are considered the same race as Asians, so they really aren't native, they migrated too. No one "stole" land from anyone else. Also the "white Europeans" who you are blaming were Spanish, the ancestors of Hispanics.

Nadia your sister was ripped off by probably another Mexican looking to exploit another ignorant immigrant. You do not pay for a visa to visit the US

    More Points To Ponder

If you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn?

If you take a Oriental person and spin him around several times,
    does he become disoriented?

Is it OK to use the AM radio after noon?

What do chickens think we taste like?

What do people in China call their good plates?

What do you call a male ladybug?

What hair color do they put on the driver's license of a bald
    man?

When dog food is new and improved tasting, who tests it?

When they first invented the clock, how did they know what time
it was to set it to?

Which is the other side of the street?

Why didn't Noah swat those two mosquitoes?

Why do they sterilize the needle for lethal injections?

Why doesn't glue stick to the inside of the bottle?

Why don't they call mustaches "mouthbrows?"

    Colorado Fire

    From this afternoons press conference:

Waldo Canyon Fire is 5 percent contained

The fire doesn't seem to have grown much from this morning but an infrared survey tonight will provide a more accurate picture.
Cascade and Cedar Heights are the most-threatened communities. "The fire is actually bumping our containment lines in Cedar Heights."
The two C-130's that arrived and in the air this afternoon can dump up to 3,000 gallons of retardant over a quarter-mile strip. Due to weight concerns at such high elevations, crews expect to carry 2,600 gallons for the Waldo Canyon Fire.

On Sunday night, officials said a Type 1 National Team, described as the Navy Seals of firefighting, had arrived in Colorado Springs and that the team has taken command

It is not illegal once you cross the border to be an illegal. If you are under 18 you qualify for food stamps, illegal
families with children recieve up to a $5400 earned income credit; Trust me, they don't pay federal income taxes, they
qualify for housing, breaks on their utility bills, free health care and education. They recieve social security from day one. Well, by golly, this is MUCH better than back home! Not to mention the $'s they send back to Mejico!

I am a proud Mom, I just saw my daughter do a brilliant job on air of explaining what is the next step. Victoria, your mom is so excited and your delivery was pitch perfect.

I hope Congress and the Governors see my words," We need to shut down Homeland Security thru Congressional order, and stop Obama for not working with Arizona on immigration laws.Now. Congress gave HLS the power and they need to take it away. Now.

Otherwise we lose faith in Congress as well.

I am a Democrat who is also appalled with Obama . There should be absolutely NO reward for coming to US illegally , even for a descendant . We are punishing the people who try to enter lawfully by throwing them under the bus to win a few votes . CHEAP POLITICAL STUNT .

AMNESTY!! HECK YES. WAIT: HECK NO, WAIT: I DON'T KNOW. IF you give illegals amnesty then what happens? They are now legal, so does that mean that unions can orgainize them and FORCE those who employ them into paying higher wages, benefits, etc.? If so then watch out for those $5 tomatos, $10 a pound veggies! And don't tell me that out of work Americans could do the job. They tried that and it didn't last a week before everybody quit! So lets spend billions on a fence! Got most of it, but they still come in! Our "elected children" have the answer! OOPS, they don't! Just more talk! Easy to say, "throw them out", but until you can keep them out, and let them back in legally it is just more talk.
