Pakistan re-opening Afghanistan supply route, Clinton says

Pakistan has decided to re-open supply routes that the United States and its allies have used to supply their troops in Afghanistan, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Tuesday.

Pakistan shut down the supply routes - stretching from Afghanistan through the lawless western tribal regions of Pakistan and down to the southern port of Karachi - last November after dozens of its troops were killed in a mistaken U.S. airstrike. Clinton said Tuesday she offered her "deepest regrets" to Pakistani Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar for the "tragic incident."

"This is a tangible demonstration of Pakistan’s support for a secure, peaceful, and prosperous Afghanistan and our shared objectives in the region," Clinton said. "This will also help the United States and ISAF conduct the planned drawdown at a much lower cost. This is critically important to the men and women who are fighting terrorism and extremism in Afghanistan."

The routes offer a shorter and more direct route than the one NATO has been using since November that goes through Russia and other nations and avoids Pakistan altogether. The supply route will take on more significance as NATO troops prepare to depart Afghanistan by 2014 and will have to move heavy equipment and supplies out of Afghanistan for shipment from Karachi.

Ah, American govt is provoking another war against Iranians by bullying them. what an irony...
It's unfortunate that a country who was once a symbol of liberty n democracy is now seen as war monger

Don't worry, CNN and American media have a habit of reporting partial truth.

BBC version of this news is as under:

"Islamabad confirmed it would not raise transit fees when the lines re-open.
US officials say the existing charge of $250 (£160) per truck will not change – Washington had balked at a Pakistani demand for $5,000 per container to let supplies flow again."

So who is going to pay the infrastructure destruction in Pakistan ????
Poor people of Pakistan, Is not it ?
and the American tax payer money will go to ignite another war by a process of bullying the Iranians.

Listen, humanity is more important than trying to secure cheap gas for your cars !!!!!!!!!

Cost us in Tax Dollars to Aid an enemy???
You were paying thrice the amount for alternate supply routes thru central Asian states. Clinton had to beg for 4 months to get the supply lines reopened.

As a American I feel shame. On one side, we are fighting a war against terror, and on the other side we are supporting it. Pakistan's ISI is a militant control agency. They make, support and protect them. They provide then arms, training, money, support. Shame on Hillary. They protected Osama, what more proof you need. He was found living in the national capital Islamabad. Please Please Stop this. We lost thousands of brave soldiers because of Pakistan's double games. They support Taliban bad Haqqani Network. Hillary Please Stop, Otherwise this will prove to be nail on coffin.

      You are not "Providing" anything.
You were paying 3 times the amount to use alternate supply routes. The US govt had to beg and apologize to get the Pakistani supply routes re-opened

John, what you said makes sense only if there's nothing else going on under the surface of the issue. I believe the US Gov is smart going this kind of war/game. We definitely don't want to ask for more enemies in this messy war. Sometimes, we only need to loose a battle in order to win the whole war. You got that?

Why are we in Afghanistan? This is what US soldiers ask themselves everyday. A country whose main cash crop is heroin/ cocaine. A military force (Afgan Army) who is supposed to be our ally, that commits secret acts of violence towards our troops on a daily basis. Afghanistan is a lost cause, when will US Politicians admit defeat?

Pakistan seems to have realized that terrorists have no homeland nor any affiliation to any country. Pakistan's journey towards prosperity for its people will start the day when it shuts down all known terrorist camps. Pakistan now needs to concentrate more on how to become rich like other Muslim countries like Malaysia and enjoy peace that comes with it. Pakistani people deserve at least this much.

    Get a rational thought folks.
Do you believe for a second that India, China, Russia or Iran, the other neighboring countries would have been at our beck and call, fighting for us like Pakistan did ?
They would have been happy to see us struggle and go down more likely kicking us in the process too. We should thank our lucky stars that there is one country there we can push and shove around to carry on with our futile, senseless 'mission'.

Dude..its more complicated than you think..India did not indulge in the fight for its own benefits.just like what is hapenning in pak india could not have afforded a backlash by muslims in its own country. Secondly India did not aks you to bomb Af.Pak has always been a rougue state and will continue to bleed US for its own benefits..Wait and watch when US will have to pay Pak to safe gaurd its own nukes..wake up when u still have time..

Oh what a short memory we have as a country. Did anyone happen to catch the apology that Pakistan gave us for knowingly harboring Obama...err Osama Bin Laden for years while pretending to look for him? As if that wasn't insult enough they took the man the led us to him and toss him in prison on some trumped up charge. We have officially become the sissys of the world. Nice job Barry.

How about we stop dealing with Pakistan all together and just work with India in the region...only reason were having to work with Pakistan is cause they have nuclear technology...and hey they sold that program to other countries like North Korea...that and i remember reading an article talking about US troops getting attacked and supplies stolen because Pakistani soldiers weren't gonna let us thru till they get their flippin bribe...obviously theres no mutual respect here and we should avoid dealing with that country

I wonder how much money we don't have, we are paying the enemy to keep those supply routes open? They surely aren't doing this out of the goodness of their hearts. When the money stops, the supply routes will close again.

Perhaps you should pose that question to the GOP! After all, they're responsible for the prolonged Afghan war that was abandoned for the invasion of Iraq! So far, both wars have just exceeded 5 trillion dollars! Outrageous!

That is why it is important not to insult our allies and to apologize where fit, especially when mistakes are made and civilians die as a result of our winding war efforts in the region! That's something the rightwing morons in America wouldn't understand!

Ya know, as a conservative, I really don't mind Clinton's apology. I get it. I understand it.

But, once again, CNN has proven the leftie shill that it is. Independent it is not.
