Pakistan re-opening Afghanistan supply route, Clinton says

Pakistan has decided to re-open supply routes that the United States and its allies have used to supply their troops in Afghanistan, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Tuesday.

Pakistan shut down the supply routes - stretching from Afghanistan through the lawless western tribal regions of Pakistan and down to the southern port of Karachi - last November after dozens of its troops were killed in a mistaken U.S. airstrike. Clinton said Tuesday she offered her "deepest regrets" to Pakistani Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar for the "tragic incident."

"This is a tangible demonstration of Pakistan’s support for a secure, peaceful, and prosperous Afghanistan and our shared objectives in the region," Clinton said. "This will also help the United States and ISAF conduct the planned drawdown at a much lower cost. This is critically important to the men and women who are fighting terrorism and extremism in Afghanistan."

The routes offer a shorter and more direct route than the one NATO has been using since November that goes through Russia and other nations and avoids Pakistan altogether. The supply route will take on more significance as NATO troops prepare to depart Afghanistan by 2014 and will have to move heavy equipment and supplies out of Afghanistan for shipment from Karachi.

Of course they reopened it...if it's closed, our convoys can't use it...if our convoys aren't there , they can't blow them up. "Looks like an ambush to me,what do you think Tonto?".

So much for a demand for apology, not only have they swallowed their pride but lost defense funding from US Senate also. This is politically or strategically the most dumbest move ever. Playing devil's advocate, Pak should have stuck to its guns till the US apologized and then opened the GLOCS but put heavy tarrif duties, to earn good revenue of it.

Topple Pakistan. Divide it into little pieces, like Yugoslavia. It's astonishing that so much bad and evil emanates from one place, from Khan sharing the Islamic nuke to the ISI conveying US secrets to Al Qaeda. The madrasses are Wahabi psycho factories, developing a long line of disgruntled jihadists who will plague the earth far into the future. Foment civil war among the ethnic groups with perceived relative deprivation, and let them eradicate one another like a self cleaning oven. It will be a favor to the world and the future.

Of course. Peter King and others have made noises about taking away all that aid. And we should. We have no partner in Pakistan.

Tell Pakistan to drop dead. They are the Talaban. Because of their behavior over the years many American and Ally troops have been killed. They have and are providing the Talaban with hideouts, money and arms support. We should have no relationships with them what-so-ever. Their word is not worth s-it. We cann't do joint military attacks with them because they inform the Taliban.

Nothing changed in this new agreement. We pay the same amount as before the Salala incident. Mind you, Hillary did not apologize, she said she was sorry for their loss. Paki media is projecting this as an "Apology". In the end, it simply shows that Pakis needed the transit money more than anything else and all this blockage and grandstanding was just a show for internal audience. Hillary called and helped them save face.

Clinton said "sorry" in her text in addition to regret. If that is not an apolgy I dont know what is. But I guess you can look at it any way you want that makes you happy.

The post fails to mention that an US apology was given first.

Here is part of Clinton text:
”We are sorry for the losses suffered by the Pakistani military,” Clinton said in a statement, recounting her discussion with Khar. ”I offered our sincere condolences to the families of the Pakistani soldiers who lost their lives. Foreign Minister Khar and I acknowledged the mistakes that resulted in the loss of Pakistani military lives,” she added.

    That is an apology.

Really! So, next time you go to a funeral and say "I am sorry for your loss" – would that mean that you are offering condolences or would it mean that you are aplogizing for murder??
