Mash-up: Working moms, blessed rain, Chick-Fil-A

The CNN Daily Mash-up is a roundup of some of the most interesting, surprising, curious, poignant or significant items to appear on CNN.com in the past 24 hours. We top it with a collection of the day's most striking photographs from around the world.

Drought could give booze a kick

OK, now this drought is getting serious. As the heat and lack of rain cause grain crops to wither, the price of corn, wheat, barley and rye goes up. Eventually, that could mean the price of your favorite alcoholic beverage may rise too, Iowa distiller Ryan Burchett tells CNN affiliate WQAD. Something must be done!

For those of you who may have forgotten ...

This is what rain looks and sounds like. CNN iReporter Paul Markgraff says the rain in this video, shot Wednesday, is the first his Wisconsin town has seen since June 1. He says the storm took down some trees and power lines. 'The wind was blowing the rain so hard it was coming down sideways and sheeting off the roofs and onto driveways," he said. "It lasted maybe half an hour, calmed down for a bit and started right back up later in the night."

New Chick-Fil-A combo: Religion and politics

Comments made by Chick-Fil-A President Dan Cathy about gay marriage to Baptist Press on Monday have sparked a spirited conversation on CNN.com.

Here's what Cathy was quoted as saying:

"We are very much supportive of the family – the biblical definition of the family unit. We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that."

Here's what a couple of our readers said in response:

rainyday

"I admire them for standing up for what they believe. It is their company to run how they please. I will continue to patronize them."

James PDX

"I am very proud of people who stand firm in their beliefs despite harsh criticism from others. It's just a shame that Dan Cathy's beliefs are stupid."

Can moms have it all?

So Yahoo hires a new CEO. And that CEO happens to be a woman. Who happens to be pregnant - like, really pregnant. These developments have people debating whether Yahoo's decision to hire Marissa Mayer is a boon to all working mothers or a misstep for the company.

Caroline Heldman, chair of the Politics Department at Occidental College in California, has this to say about that:

"When we talk about maternity leave, we assume it's only women who should be taking time off when a child is born. I think that comes from a culture where the assumption is that women are the primary caretakers and the father's bond with his children is not as important," Heldman said. "I think we would have better familial bonds if we viewed parenting as something that every parent could participate in, not just women."

A super mom needs a super car

CNN iReporter Joyce Chow attended Comic-Con this week in San Diego, California. While there she entered the Bat Cave, which was brimming with all the iterations of the Batmobile, from the campy '60s TV series to the blockbuster movie, "The Dark Knight Rises," opening Friday.  Chow describes the vehicles as "pure beauty." Who are we to argue? Click here to see her whole gallery.

Look ahead: 'Dark Knight Rises,' Ramadan begins

The eagerly awaited and much-hyped film "Batman: The Dark Knight Rises" opens Friday. Have you secured your opening day ticket, or don't you care?

Also eagerly awaited - albeit for utterly different reasons - by many people is the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which begins sometime Friday with the sighting of the moon. During Ramadan, observant Muslims abstain from food and drink during daylight hours. The observance commemorates the month in which the Prophet Mohammed received the first of the revelations that make up the Quran.

...and what's with this "working moms". How politically incorrect is THAT phrase. I don't know about you, but I've met very few unemployed mothers who didn't work harder than most single men I know.
If you are a mommy to a living child, you are working your ass off.

      @chrissy:
How sweet you are to apologize to me for something that what wholly not of your doing...
It takes a big person to own up and apologize to someone, but you didn't do anything to me; I appreciate the gesture, though.

Oh yeah. Dry dating. I've heard of that. Instead of arts and crafts day, assisted living centers swap male residents. They called it speed dating even before we did, but too many fell asleep. Their mouths were dry upon awaking, hence the name.
Now watch this hogwash post but my replies to saywhat (especially) wouldn't post anti mossad sentiment. Also @chrissy and banasy wouldb't post)
