Against the law to carry a concealed weapon in Colorado in most cases. This guy probably had no permit. Carried 'em anyway. Killed a bunch of people wounded more. I believe in gun control, but I just don't know what you do with crazy people.

You just openly admitted that gun control doesn't work, and then you say you support it? You moonbats are crazier than I thought.

I got an idea – how about not having these types of guns for sale? so when a crazy dude goes to the store after his voices told him to, the best he can get is a pellet gun....

      I mean, c'mon – use your brain.

Colorado has a Concealed Weapons Law. You CAN get permits, most likely this guy did not have one though.

Aek he was a terrorist. Domestic. We as America just do not want to put the word on the fact. Most of the people in that theater were in pure terror and thought they were going to die. If that is not the definition of terrorism I do not know what is.

For the record "terrorism" is usually reserved (except in cases of state propaganda) for those who use terror to try and affect some other goal. Often it's to advance a political agenda or affect international attention. It's not just doing something scary, brutal, and horrific. If we learn he's attempting to overthrow the government of the state of Colorado then he would be a terrorist.

For those who say that the wider availability of guns that private parties could carry around on their persons would have prevented or limited the death toll, I ask do you really want more guns in the hands of kids? For every incident where a kid with a handgun might have saved the day, there probably would be 20 more where a kid would have acted irresponsibly with a gun. As far as letting adults in general carry firearms, I just think that, on balance, you would have more people acting irresponsibly with firearms that you would have acting responsibly and saving the day.

I believe that armed security guards at this theatre could have been just as effective in either preventing or limiting the death toll...and maybe even more so. At least they would have been trained and many people who carry a gun around are not.

I agree with those who say that the problem isn't guns per se. The problem is the people who carry them.

After all these years and when all is said and done, I think that the sherrifs of the Old West got it right...

...give up your guns when you come into town and you can have them back when you leave.

The problem is the people...not the guns. That's why when you have too many people in such close proximity with each other, the last thing you need is more and more of them with a gun within reach.

What would some "hero" with a "conceal and carry" – the movie theater was dark and full of smoke – do you really think it would have made a difference??

    • Chitwt

Most people thought it was a stunt initially....part of the theatrics of the movie. I doubt conceal and carry would have prevented it, and I doubt, in the fog of the situation with smoke/gas in the air, that someone with a concealed gun in THAT situation is going to reach for their gun, as opposed to getting out of there.

It's the movie theater, not a battlefield. (point: there isn't a one of us who has ever thought "hmmm, maybe I should be packin' heat since I'm going to be at the movie theater).

Finally -yes we have 2nd amendment rights in this country – but I'm very skeptical that our founding fathers envisioned a society where everyone was strapped with a gun.

That's a lame argument. I've never seen any of these mass shootings that are stopped and lives saved by private citizens carrying. Law enforcement yes but not average people. Fact is, it's too easy for anyone to get guns, vests and tear gas. If people had to wait several months and go through some mental evaluations and extensive background checks we'd see less of these type shootings. It's way too easy for nut jobs and angry people to get this stuff.

Yes. They'd be dead. He was heavily armored, had an AK-47, and had the element or surprise. If someone had a concealed carry, and tried to use it on him, he'd have killed them.

Why is this garbage for sale? Why does ANYONE need these things? You want to go hunting with a rifle, fine, but the stuff he was able to get his hands on? This is just crazy.

Yes, someone with a gun would have changed the outcome. It would likely have been worse. Do you really want some half-trained yokel firing a gun in the dark? The guy who had a gun at the Giffords shooting damn near shot one of the guys who stopped the shooter. There's a reason why police and military go through weeks of intense firearms training, including close quarters combat shooting. And even they sometimes shoot the wrong people. Some guy who spent a Saturday in a classroom getting his conceal-carry permit will cause more destruction, and will likely get shot himself in the process.

He invoked TERROR – that makes him a terrorist in my book.

    • Common Sense

The bad thing is that most people relate "terrorist" as being Al-Q or an extremist from the Mid-East. You are right, a terrorist is anyone that invokes terror to get a desired reaction or response. We do not know yet what his "desired response" is or if there was one beyond him justifying it to himself. This type of person is more or less a sociopath and may never be clear to us why he did what he did.
But, nevertheless, there is no problem calling him a terrorist. Look at the response this has already gotten.

By your definition.. that stement would be correct. Lets face it, in America you can committ the same crime, but get different sentences based on race- thats just the truth. Now, this kid will be deemed crazy, and because he is white.. he'll be put away in a semi-resort looney bend where he'll get to eat jello-pudding 3 times a day. Then after 15yrs or so of country-living, some half *ss doctor will say, "Hes ready to be returned to society", and be let go.

GreyLady's definition is as good as any, especially when def #2 is used:

      ter·ror·ist    [ter-er-ist] noun
1.a person, usually a member of a group, who uses or advocates terrorism.
2.a person who terrorizes or frightens others.
3.(formerly) a member of a political group in Russia aiming at the demoralization of the government by terror.
4.an agent or partisan of the revolutionary tribunal during the Reign of Terror in France.

It seems to me that in order to be a terrorist, a person needs to be striving to advance an agenda through acts of terror. If this shooter had an agenda (other than killing people), then certainly he becomes a terrorist. If not, he's perhaps better thought of as a mass murderer. If we're to be consistent, though, maybe it is appropriate to use the "terrorist" label as we've used it to describe other individuals (such as the Beltway Sniper) who were also probably better thought of as something other than terrorists.

Now we have a terrorist amongst us. Someone had to know his state of mind..you can't hide this evilness!!!!!

My heart breaks. If someone had been allowed to conceal carry in theatres there would have been a great chance that the shootings would not have lasted that long and lives saved. We've seen that with the 71-year old Williamson saving those 30 patrons at the internet cafe and prevented a more harm and crime. Let people carry so we can protect ourselves from the crazy and criminals and law enforcement cannot be there. My prayers and healing to those affected.

I'm for people having the right to own a gun but the point is not that people would be able to shoot back. the point is that the bad guy would be unlikely to go in there shooting in the first place. Thats' why gunmen attacking police stations in the U.S. are relatively rare.
