A heavily armed gunman killed at least 12 people and wounded 38 more during an early Friday morning screening of the new Batman movie at an Aurora, Colorado, theater, police Chief Dan Oates told reporters.
Earlier, police said 14 had been killed.
Police arrested a man believed to be the shooter in a rear parking lot of the theater, Frank Fania, a police spokesman, told CNN. The suspect was not immediately identified, though Fania said he was believed to be in his early 20s.
"He did not resist. He did not put up a fight," Fania said. Police seized a rifle and a handgun from the suspect, and another gun was found in the theater, he said.

According to witnesses, the shooter kicked in the emergency exit door in theater 9, threw some sort of disorienting smoke bombs and started shooting.
Witness Hayden Miller told KUSA-TV that he was inside Theater 16 and heard several shots.
"Like little explosions going on and shortly after that we heard people screaming," he told the station.
Hayden said at first he thought it was part of a louder movie next door. But then he saw "people hunched over leaving theater."
Swedish Medical Center spokeswoman Nicole Williams says two people injured at the theater have arrived at the hospital in critical condition.
She says emergency workers have said there could be several more patients.
Local hospitals were reportedly alerted to a "mass casualty incident."

More guns is the ONLY answer – like totally do people like totally not get this – like the kids in the theater should have had a gun. Look at all the multiple gun death situations where people killed the bad guy before he did his work – (duh – like I can't really remember any) – so in spite of the fact every American packs a gun – maybe get another one? That way there could be one in the left pocket or right pocket – and maybe a gun holster to wear around the chest. Just think if the movie you are at has a loud gun shot in it (maybe or maybe not from the movie) – its simple – just get out your right pocket gun if you are holding your popcorn in your left hand or vise versa! If you have a drink in your left hand and the popcorn in your right hand then you get your friend to grab the one out of your chest holster – and just go rat -ta -tat wherever you hear another rat-ta-tat going on. Sweet stuff being in the USA hey????

Too bad they weren't all carrying guns and gas masks. I'd like to see a licensed gun toter shoot accurately, in the dark, after being tear-gassed. Yep, more concealed weapons are definitely the answer.
So you are saying that somehow a lunatc with absolute freedom to shoot people unchallenged is somehow better than someone stepping up and taking a shot at ending the madness? Even if the shots don't all land on the target, at the very least you have tossed an unexpected event into his plan, so at the very least he may stop shooting the unarmed citizens and go for the one shooting at him. Odds are he will do what most cowards do; turn tail and run. This kind of thinking makes no sense, the desire to just sit and be victimized rather than take a chance and make a difference. You should be ashamed.
Ah yes, the "infallible" logic that more guns makes the world a safer place. Because a better security detail for such large scale events wouldn't be the better option. Lets not get into the debate of assuming everyone has gun training and knows how to take adequate aim and fire. And of course, you turn around as if your way of thinking is the only truth to respond to such incident. People similar to you going as far as calling everyone "lefties" like it's going out of style. How about us centralists? The people who see the need for armed trained MENTALLY HEALTHY individuals at some of these events for the safety and well being of the people. Adding more guns into that theater may have just prompted our murder happy friend to sneak a bomb into the back room. Violence begets violence. A more agressive stance has only in my experience caused such things to escalate. But of course, a Psychological Degree and background in criminal behaviour means squat to a pro gun "common sense" guy like yourself, right?
I agree that security would have been a good idea but I also agree that in cases where someone is actively shooting someone else using force on the attacker can stop the attacker. Just another point of view to consider.
Yes, because the most logical thing to do in a dark, packed theater clouded with tear gas with hundreds of people screaming and trying to flee is to open fire.
And where would those other shots end up? More likely than not, in some innocent bystander.
By the way, I have been tear gassed before. It sucks, but you can still see, and I am a damn good pistol marksman. But would I just randomly spray bullets in the general direction of the assailant? Absolutely not! I always wait until I positively identify my target. Even putting a few rounds into the air will force the shooter to re-think his strategy. All I know is there is nothing less effective than doing nothing.

I really don't think anyone would be sure what they would do in that situation. I will say that doing something would be better than doing nothing at all.

You'll notice commenters like "bang yer shot" and "don patriot" are all fired up about this event. They are actually excited and giddy. They have been waiting for this. They are closer to this than you can imagine. And there are many of them In this country. And in many ways, they are hoping for more of this.
