'Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day' sets record, restaurant chain says

Chick-fil-A says it set a sales record on Wednesday, the day that supporters rallied around the fast-food chain amid a debate over its president's opposition to same-sex marriage.

The chain won't release sales numbers, but "we can confirm reports that it was a record-setting day," said Steve Robinson, Chick-fil-A's executive vice president of marketing.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee had called on people to buy food at the chain on Wednesday, which he dubbed "Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day," after a backlash against the company and their president.

The controversy started after an interview with the fast-food restaurant chain's president and COO, Dan Cathy, appeared in The Baptist Press on July 16. He weighed in with his views on family.

"We are very much supportive of the family - the biblical definition of the family unit," Cathy said. "We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that."

On a Facebook page Huckabee created announcing the event, more than 620,000 people said they would participate.

He called for a response to a backlash against the restaurants and its president. Customers flocked to the restaurants on Wednesday, many showing their support for the chain and Cathy's opposition to same-sex marriage.

Gay rights activists are planning to hold a "national same-sex kiss day at Chick-fil-A" on Friday.

Ever consider that the whole thing might have been a publicity stunt? Worked.

How come gays can say and do anything they like, but no one else can express a personal opinion?

@Eddie Everett – Obviously you did not see a recent article where a gay couple wanted to buy a cake for their wedding and the cake owner denied their service.

Is it coincidence that you make the opening frame a picture with one person (even with the surplus of pictures showing how it really was) with a prominent "Do Not Enter" sign in the foreground?

This is great now I can go to a Chick-Fil-A and not have Obama type ghetto Hoodies in the same restaurant I'm in.
It will be a pleasure eating without genetic mutants sitting nearby

Yup, now you can sit next to bible thumpers who preach family values while they wait for their mistress to call, and sit next to people who go to a church run by a pedophile priest, and sit next to people who want to throw their religion in your face, but want *you* to keep *your* life to yourself.

Great group of friends you have there!

Conservatives rally around hate-speech, and hand over their money to a big corporation for junk food.
Liberals rally to go to the same spot, kiss each other, leave with their money still in pocket, and are healthier for it.

Brilliant. But I guess the conservatives do get to "stand up for their values". What are their values? See above.

interesting how people will defend something that didnt need defended, but when something along the lines of state government taking state help away from people that need it no one cares. awsome to see where the priorities in this country lay. hmm, wonder if cathy is laughing all the way to the bank.

Some of these responses on here are absolutely disgusting!! Free speech? Sure, but at least be respectful about it. Here's an idea: LIVE AND LET LIVE!! Pay your taxes, don't kick puppies and treat EVERYONE with the same respect with which you wish to be treated. If we all did that, imagine how different the world would be!!

As far as so-called bigots explaining their ghastly behavior of eating in a fast food restaurant to their enlightened children 30 years from now–I’d like to see liberals explain to their children 30 years from now what they did to destroy America’s cities, like Detroit and Chicago; they can explain to their children what they did to undermine American supremacy in the world, and how they drove off productive people, and how they destroyed the education system to produce a generation of unemployable dullards.
