'Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day' sets record, restaurant chain says

Chick-fil-A says it set a sales record on Wednesday, the day that supporters rallied around the fast-food chain amid a debate over its president's opposition to same-sex marriage.

The chain won't release sales numbers, but "we can confirm reports that it was a record-setting day," said Steve Robinson, Chick-fil-A's executive vice president of marketing.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee had called on people to buy food at the chain on Wednesday, which he dubbed "Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day," after a backlash against the company and their president.

The controversy started after an interview with the fast-food restaurant chain's president and COO, Dan Cathy, appeared in The Baptist Press on July 16. He weighed in with his views on family.

"We are very much supportive of the family - the biblical definition of the family unit," Cathy said. "We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that."

On a Facebook page Huckabee created announcing the event, more than 620,000 people said they would participate.

He called for a response to a backlash against the restaurants and its president. Customers flocked to the restaurants on Wednesday, many showing their support for the chain and Cathy's opposition to same-sex marriage.

Gay rights activists are planning to hold a "national same-sex kiss day at Chick-fil-A" on Friday.

I love it!!! My family visited 3 times yesterday. Christians have power, but we have to be active participants! Folks this is a chicken sandwich that we rallied around. Just imagine the good we could do working together!!

Let this be a part of a true christian awakening.

Christians do have power. That is why you were able to deny blacks equal rights for so long.

Let's not make this into a liberal vs conservative thing. I call myself a liberal and applaud what Mr. Cathy did. I agree with his stance on marriage. So please don't divide the country anymore than it already is. I plan to take my family to Chic- Fil- A to support them.

I'm guessing the record is for "The most sales on a Wednesday after a disastrous PR mess"....hardly worth crowing about.

Bravo to the American people for coming out in full force and standing up to insensitive bigots like Rahm Emanuel and Thomas Menino. Hatemongering and devisive saber-rattling have no place in our nation. If you don't agree with a company's policies and practices, don't patronize their establishments. But don't you dare presume to trample all over their right to worship and speak as they see fit. Shame on these mayors and shame on those who echo their intolerant rhetoric.

Everyone wants to talk about how the people who disagree with them are the reason why America will fail. Here's a tidbit to learn for all of you...America was not a free country prior to the revolution because most of society did not want independence. It took time. The majority agreed with one side. After a while, enough people started to agree that it would be worth it. So the majority shifted.

That is what this great country is founded on. If you are not in the majority, nothing is wrong with you and NOTHING is wrong with the majority. It just means more people need to be convinced. It is not cause for hatred. It is not cause for violence, name-calling, etc. This country is truly failing because both sides of every argument thinks they are right and the other side is wrong and that the world is going to end because you do not have your way. People need to learn to calm down. I used to think there were too many pharmies going around but with the way things are headed, most people in this country need some kind of pill to calm themselves down. Just because someone doesn't agree with you does not mean your stress level has to increase or that you have to increase their stress level. Agree to disagree. Then work to get more people to support your conclusions. Eventually, if enough people work hard enough, you will become the majority and the law will go your way.

If it were as simple as "majority rules" then I would be able to buy a left handed redhead down at the corner market. It doesn't work that way. The minority is protected by the rule of law.

Truett Cathy is just as much a minority as the gays he hates. Devout southern baptists are not that large a group. Casual southern baptists are a larger group, but no where near a majority. In a nation this large and this diverse, none of us are in a majority, we are all minorities in some way, and if you support the idea that a mob can trample a minority, you will someday be the one trampled. Count on it. Better to protect the minority, and insist that we all are treated with respect. That doesn't mean that a particular minority gets to enforce their will on everyone else, it means we each do our own thing, within the law. Mr Cathy can close his restaurant on Sunday, good for him. He can not require me to close my restaurant on Sunday. He can have a traditional marriage. He can't require me to have a traditional marriage.

BTW, for those of you who are so vocal in supporting him, if you have been divorced, are you aware that he views you in the same light as the gays you agree with him about? If it were up to him, you would have to go back to that first marriage. He's not clear, but based on the bible, if you are male, you should be able to keep your second wife as a concubine. Ladies, I think you don't have it so good, but hey, bible, yay!

Its so funny that the liberal left spews out hate when you don't agree with their opinion. They will force you into agreeing with them somehow, marches, calling names, spreading hate, etc.. What hypocritical narrow minded people.

It is their right to make a stand on the issue. I may not agree with the stand but that is our right as American citizens to feel and believe as we want. Do not let ANYONE because of their agenda take that away from us.

TAKE THAT!!! You weenie puffers and rug munchers...despite what you want everyone to believe, this wonderful country has not yet sunk to the depths of perversion you espouse, and you will no longer be allowed to shout down the vast majority of us who are raising our children to be morally strong! Climb back into the closet you slithered out of.

    • C'mon get with it!

if you want to call someone who refuses to let a biased bigot spew his nonsense a hater, then go ahead. it is a very psychotic twist of logic when those who are advocating EVERYONE being treated EQUALLY are called haters. Yes, I hate haters. I hate people who would deny others their basic rights. It amazes me how many conservative clowns there are on these sites who somehow think treating people badly is OK. Let's hope for your sake there's nothing in your life that would cause you to be discriminated against. Though I suspect, living in a trailer and wearing the same NASCAR t-shirt for 5 days at a time, as well as that 6th grade education probably get you discriminated against in the job market. I know I wouldn't hire you. I only hire people with brains, educations, and a sense of humanity.

We say "One Nation under God" but we don't obey Him.
We say "In God we Trust" but don't obey Him.
Wake up America, we are Christians by foundation. Stand for God in all areas.
Obey Him first, but don't forget to love your neighbor.

Chick-Fil-A's backward, bigoted views are the least of their problems.

    Their food is disgusting.

So let the fat, bloated, bigots engorge themselves on junk food to show their support for hatred.

Eating Chick-Fil-A is is punishment enough for their ignorance.

Is that all you got? Face it, not all people think or agree the way you want them to. If you don't like our Christian country and beliefs, then go to another country. Oh that's right, there's NO OTHER better country out their. So stop your whining and if you don't like other's people's views, then don't leave your little home......
