'Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day' sets record, restaurant chain says

Chick-fil-A says it set a sales record on Wednesday, the day that supporters rallied around the fast-food chain amid a debate over its president's opposition to same-sex marriage.

The chain won't release sales numbers, but "we can confirm reports that it was a record-setting day," said Steve Robinson, Chick-fil-A's executive vice president of marketing.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee had called on people to buy food at the chain on Wednesday, which he dubbed "Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day," after a backlash against the company and their president.

The controversy started after an interview with the fast-food restaurant chain's president and COO, Dan Cathy, appeared in The Baptist Press on July 16. He weighed in with his views on family.

"We are very much supportive of the family - the biblical definition of the family unit," Cathy said. "We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that."

On a Facebook page Huckabee created announcing the event, more than 620,000 people said they would participate.

He called for a response to a backlash against the restaurants and its president. Customers flocked to the restaurants on Wednesday, many showing their support for the chain and Cathy's opposition to same-sex marriage.

Gay rights activists are planning to hold a "national same-sex kiss day at Chick-fil-A" on Friday.

"We intend to stay the course," he said. "We know that it might not be popular with everyone, but thank the Lord, we live in a country where we can share our values and operate on biblical principles." - Cathy on Baptist Press.

I think that all of you Americans are easily offended. The man did not condem gays or lesbians. He simply expressed his views as a human being.
I do not have any idea why you seem to believe that you can force your views, beliefs, or lifestyle onto someone else and still have the nerve and/or stupidity to badger another human being who simply voiced their opinion.
Tolerance is not the same as acceptance. Do not forget that.

Glennward, I don't think that all Americans are easily insulted, etc. I think that we are dealing wth a group of people that are extremely narrow-minded. You said it exactly right...the CEO was merely expressing his belief, etc. But, unfortunately, gay/lesbians take it extremely personally and just don't get it. But of course their beliefs must be right – right? For God's sake...live the way you want to but don't condemn one CEO for his beliefs. Grow up everyone.

You should be talking to Cathy about that. He gave 5 million dollars of CFA profit to lobby and force his views on a lot of someone elses. You are on the wrong side here.

It affects gay people a lot more than you. If you were Jewish, what would you think about CFA funneling millions of dollars a year to a neo-nazi group?

whats CNN supporting Gay or anti Gay? Its very evident they are not neutral and biased towards Gay.guess one of its stars- Anderson Cooper is Gay...thats y he rallys for Gays... No issues with that... dont use media platform... float your own organization & generate your disciples....... media plays a very negative role in flaring up passions and its bad for the country...

Croast- your comment about the middle east and gays is extremely ignorant. You are comparing apples to oranges. The people who run the stations are not donating money to have these people executed like this chicken place is donating to the anti-gay organizations and hiding behind religion. FYI- If you know anything about the middle east and middle eastern culture you would know that the government doesn't represent its people views. If you are going to make a comment and post it, use a couple more brain cells and make a legitimate argument, otherwise you just sound uneducated and uninformed.

Nancy, how many businesses, restaurants, etc. do you deal with every day who have the same beliefs as the CEO of Chick-Fil-A? And who donate money to anti-gay organziations. He is NOT HIDING BEHIND RELIGION he came right out and said it was his belief. Relax...

You can thank Rahm Emanuel and Boston's Menino for helping Chick-Fil-A have a very, very successful day yesterday. Most of the U.S. believes in the traditional marriage (man/woman) – so, now what? As I mentioned in a prior post; if you want to be treated equally then why do you insist on making spectacles of yourselves and why do you feel the need to shove YOUR way of life down everyone's throat? I am sincerely puzzled by this...

Dan Kelly might as well be the next hitler. Hitler also had a plan for gays. To burn them all to death. This guy is just doing it the legal way. By donating money to organizations that don't support gay marriage, that think it's the devil, and that think it can be "cured."

You are a vile, spoiled foolish person! How dare you compare a man who simply disagrees with your point of view to that of a man responsible for the horrendous, slow-killing of my grandparents, numerous aunts, uncles and cousins along with six million other innocent souls!!! My cousins were only children when they were gassed and burned like discarded trash! Just remember, Hitler treated those who "disagreed" with his values in the same manner – hence, you're acting more like Hitler than the chicken sandwich guy.

How do they expect people to be stupid enough to believe anything they say....such as claiming record sales on Weds...when they refuse (read: don't HAVE) to PROVE IT! Franchise owners DO NOT REPORT THEIR DAILY SALES to the main office – so I'd be interested in knowing where this load of you-know-what came from. Oh wait! Their "marketing" department. Duh. No surprises why they decided to LIE about sales figures they don't even HAVE! Disgusting food. Disgusting behavior. Will never give them a dime of my money!

"just because we have moral values that do not agree with your values does not make us wrong or haters."

when you actively campaign to dictate how other people have to live their lives because of your 'values' then yes, yes it does.

And...as one of my gay friends put it....she was disappointed to hear the CEO's views and it's yet another reminder that she can't marry who she wants, but she also thanked God for free speech...the good, the bad and the ugly.
WHY does ANYONE care who ANYONE ELSE marries? WHY on earth is that ANYONE'S BUSINESS? Gay people would not choose to be gay based on all the hurdles and discrimination they have to overcome EVERY day of their lives. People love who they love...move on!

Absolutely perfect post JackMason! I do have a question that I hope you can answer or help me understand (anyone else please feel free to answer as well). If the gay/lesbian community is so intent on equal rights, etc. then why do they have to go to such extremes to be noticed? It is very weird...
