The July heat wave that wilted crops, shriveled rivers and fueled wildfires officially went into the books Wednesday as the hottest single month on record for the continental United States.
The average temperature across the Lower 48 was 77.6 degrees Fahrenheit, 3.3 degrees above the 20th-century average, the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration reported. That edged out the previous high mark, set in 1936, by two-tenths of a degree, NOAA said.
U.S. forecasters started keeping records in 1895. The seven months of 2012 to date are the warmest of any year on record and were drier than average as well, NOAA said.

July was only the hottest month because wolf godders have yet to prove how hot it gets in hell. ( Fairytale wolf godders like President Obama and candidate Romney and most of US who claim hell is hotter than July yet have no proof)

@Joey. The insect population has increased exponentially since 1895. The earth's insects weigh more and also give-off more heat than humans, even though insects don't have any mechanised factories that pollute.
Trees, even though being under constant attack, also produce more heat than puny little mankind.
Global climate change is natural...we know for a fact that it has happened without humans. Mankinds pollution has only taken this naturally slow climate change and turned it into one with violent weather extremes.
So violent weather extremes never happened until recently and it's all due to man, right? And you know this how? Al Gore said so?
The majority of scientists believe that human activity is the primary driver – despite what the Koch brothers want you to believe (btw they spend $200 million a year to create that impression of doubt). Even one of the Koch brothers experts has converted to the mainstream scientific understanding.

Who would ever deny climate change? Climate change has been happening since the beginning of Earth. Climate change is the most natural thing ever. You think the climate changing is the end of the Earth? You're a whacko! Tell me, if the previous hottest month was in 1934, why would that back up your data? Wouldn't the previous hottest month be some time around now since man is making all this happen? Why would 1934 be hotter than 2008 or 2007? I thought it was getting warmer every year?
It's not about comparing one year to another. All the facts show that the earth is warming up and has done so over the last few decades. In fact we may already have reached the tipping point and are on the slippery slope to destruction. Even if you believe the Chamber of Commerce that humans will evolve resistance to the increased temperatures – we'll still have the other issues to deal with – water, crops, oil bubble bursting, etc
There have been hot years in the past, and droughts in the past. what is looked thought is the 800,000 year temperature trend s which ave been consistent and predictable with some variability (kind of like your water bill for your home). The median temperature trend for the entire globe has been wandering quite far off of the predictable trend line for about 150 years. (it would be like if you got 6 water bills in a row that were $30 more expensive... you would assume that there was a problem somewhere.) Climate scientist agree that it isn't a measurement error. having July be the Hottest July... adds another data point to the tred of evidence.
Recall the politicians who blamed the hole in our ozone layer on us. Now we know that without that natural hole that was burned into our atmosphere eons ago, life itself would not be possible.
And now those same political offices have blamed us for global climate change. What next? Blame humans for burning in hell and making it even hotter?
