Mom: Texas shooter had mental health issues

The gunman who killed two others before police ended his life in a shootout near Texas A&M University had been battling mental health issues on and off for years, his mother said.

Police say Thomas Caffall, known to his family as "Tres," killed a constable and a bystander and injured four others before police fatally shot him.

His mother, Linda Weaver, said the family became worried after Caffall quit his job in January and announced that he would never work again.

"We had been very concerned about him," Weaver told CNN.

Caffall had withdrawn from the family, and the fear was that he might attempt suicide, his mother said.

But she never imagined that her son would hurt anyone else, or that his end would come so violently.

"Losing a child is a parent's worst nightmare. This is worse," she said.

I have an idea... instead of spending billions of tax dollars going to mars for the fourth time and building nuclear weapons which cannot be used... lets devert a few billion (out of 630 bil) to intensely study the human mind. With all our current science and technology we still know very little about what causes and how to detectect or prevent such terrible problems... which often result in such tradgic events... PET scans and fMRI recently has produced new insights into addiction... we need to look into violence.... banning instruments of violence (guns) is just not going to prevent further violence... since mentally ill people will find other even worse methods... this country has a strange habit of letting children watch violent movies and video games...little or no support for ill people which are stigmatized...we need to think about this logically. THERE IS NO EXCUSE!! OR IS THERE? While these tragedies are becoming more common, sadly, there is a BIG PROBLEM with the system! I have a grandson, he is now 19, who is bi polar. He has been kicked out of EVERY school he was enrolled in, including pre K, for, you name it! His mother has tried everything to get him help! EVERY one of these "professionals" have cut him loose, back into society! He HAS beaten his mother to a pulp, gotten into fights, threatened police and others, and YET they continue to let him go! SO it seems we have to wait until something terrible happens and then we ask WHY!

@ronvan, there is indeed a problem with the system. If he has been diagnosed with BP disorder through PET Scans and Blood Work etc., any licensed professional should be able to help considering his record. I am certainly not an expert in this field but would be happy to send you the names of some professionals. If you are comfortable putting your home town on the blog(it isn't confidential) or leave your email, I will be happy to help. Unfortunately too many of these so called professionals are not willing or able to study the case to make a good judgement call. I have a Phd. in Neuropsychology and we work as a team. A really good psychiatrist is needed but they are hard to find without keeping you coming back every week for psychotherapy. Not helpful and very expensive. There is no stigma with this disorder. I will check back and see if you left some information. I hope that helps.
