The gunman who killed two others before police ended his life in a shootout near Texas A&M University had been battling mental health issues on and off for years, his mother said.
Police say Thomas Caffall, known to his family as "Tres," killed a constable and a bystander and injured four others before police fatally shot him.
His mother, Linda Weaver, said the family became worried after Caffall quit his job in January and announced that he would never work again.
"We had been very concerned about him," Weaver told CNN.
Caffall had withdrawn from the family, and the fear was that he might attempt suicide, his mother said.
But she never imagined that her son would hurt anyone else, or that his end would come so violently.
"Losing a child is a parent's worst nightmare. This is worse," she said.

But he had the right to possess guns. Mental health problems don't take that right away from someone. Do they?
Saywhat:
I read about this yesterday on another site, and I wondered why it wasn't here.
That being said, I have to agree that psychological background has to be looked at in addition to criminal background...
The only bar to owning a firearm in most states is a felony conviction. You can be crazy as a loon, but what psychiatric physician is gonna risk his or her practice over your lawsuit and a red neck jury.
Good point, Portland tony.
And also a whole new definition of 'responsible'. Isn't that what is touted by gun toters and all gun lovers.
Texas is the wrong state to kill a cop mental or not. He's white so he might get a break
He caught a bullet, not a break!
I bet mom did not let him play with the toys and he will get off as an abused son mental age 6. As the cops dragged him from the house he was heard yelling I want to play with my trucks, and ma yelling shut up and sell them on eBay.
Whatever can go wrong, inevitably will.
If four things can go wrong, the on that will do the most damage, will be the first one to go wrong
Oh! Yeah he was killed he probably still shot himself even though they say a cop killed him
It is all G. Bush Fault 41 and 43 the last guy was all pres. 44s fault
has anyone else no-test all killers have mental health issues (O_O).
Even if these killers have mental health issues, it is no excuse for their terrorism.
All obese people have mental issues. So that's not the problem anymore than guns are.
COMMON DENOMINATOR: Mind altering substances, prescription drugs.
For every gun used, there is a knife, fork, hammer, baseball bat, china frisbee, and human teeth used.
Guns are not the issue raised. Mind altering pharmaceuticals are.
You have done a good job of mimicking a regular blogger but I am not taking the bait. Move along now.
Nor do I believe the other one.
A little lol for you.
It's quite obvious gun control laws, razor wire fences and gun free zones don't work. Time to issue shotguns to every teacher. I gauruntee that will work.
By fedral law you must pass a criminal background check and MENTAL HEALTH HISTORY to purchase a hand gun. Locking children in a twelve foot razor wire fence with a gunfree zone sign daes not make them any safer, it makes them sitting ducks, easy targets. I guarantee that if you issue shotguns to every teacher you will not have anymore school shootings. We didn't have school shootings when the gymn teacher taught you how to properly dissassemble, clean, reassemble and fire a 22 rifle. Our final exam for woodshop was to make your own crossbow and successfully shoot it. Just to make my point a little clearer, they didn't lock the doors anc take roll call for 9/11, they told you get out!.
I don't know where the heck you gre up at, but it sure wasn't here!
Make up your mind America, first you complain about illegal guns killing, now you complain about legal guns killing people. IN OTHER WORDS NOTHING MATTERS MAKE ALL THE LAWS YOU WANT MORE SHOOTINGS ARE COMING LEGAL GUN OR NOT!!!
