Slaughterhouse accused of inhumane treatment of cattle reopens

A California slaughterhouse closed after an animal rights group released a video of workers there apparently mistreating animals has been allowed to reopen, U.S. regulators said on Monday.

The Agriculture Department said that inspections at Central Valley Meat Co of Hanford continue but the plant has made changes and can resume operations.

"As of this morning, CVM will be allowed to resume processing," Aaron Lavalle, a spokesman for the agency's Food Safety and Inspection Service, said in a statement.

Lavalle said regulators had concluded an evaluation of an "extensive corrective action plan" formulated to address "recent humane handling violations"

No words, just utter disbelief. USDA decides: it's cruelty as usual for California slaughterhouse, in spite of USDA policy. Humane Methods of Slaughter Act? Bah humbug! At least now consumers KNOW FOR SURE that their hamburger and dairy come from sick, lame cows who can barely walk to the kill floor and are beaten, prodded with electric prods, sprayed with scalding water, and tortured before and while they are killed. Will USDA or plant managers monitor the animal cruelty at this facility or install video surveillance? Highly unlikely. It's cruelty as usual in spite of American values and morality. The only way to stop this insanity is to quit buying the product. No meat. No dairy. No eggs.

Go Vegan and nobody gets hurt.

Go vegan?? I cant support an industry that ruthlessly cuts and thrashes its living products(plants are alive btw) up just for a profit. I support the meat industry because they humanly stun their animals before killing. If they did not they would be shut down by one of the many government inspectors that are at the slaughter house everyday. Why do you think a slaughter house is able to reopen after being shut down when one of these videos surfaces? because the changes they made are pretty much that they fired the people that broke the rules, and had an employee meeting stressing the importance of following the rules. I think you should spend a day in a slaughter house before you are able to have a non biased opinion on the subject.

It's a travesty to treat animals this way just because they're going to die anyway! These animals give their lives so we can live, they should be respected & revered! Biblical & Native customs taught people to only kill what they use, to kill in specific manners & rituals so as not to cause undue harm & stress & to thank their "animal brothers" for providing food & pelts! How can we have forgotten or bypassed these natural laws? How can old, sick, frightened cattle, chickens or hogs even be good for human consumption? This article & others like it, makes me like the idea of becoming a vegan! I eat chicken & fish, but mostly fruit & veggies, as it is! I'm guessing the more vegetarians, the less horrific situations like this!!
